The Fair Trade Commission yesterday ordered SK Telecom Co. to not repeat
deceptive advertising about its membership service and publish an official
apology in major newspapers.
The nation's largest mobile-phone operator said its members saved 3 percent
on gasoline purchases made on OK Cashbag cards at SK filling stations from
December 2003 to May 2004.
This was six times the 0.5 percent discount OK Cashbag cardholders are
normally given at the stations.
But the teleco deceived its members by not explaining that 2.5 percent of
bonus points were deducted from their SK memberships, the fair-trade regulator
said, and the scheme was a shell game where discounts and points were shifted
from one membership plan to the other.
OK Cashbag is Korea's first and largest business network launched by SK Corp.
featuring about 5,000 on and offline retailers and mobile-service providers. The
20 million subscribers to the OK Cashbag service can accumulate bonus points
whenever they make purchases from these companies.
The fair trade law prohibits unfair or deceptive advertising in any medium.
At the end of 2003, SK Telecom had more than 17 million subscribers with a
56.6 percent share of Korea's mobile-phone market. |
