[000] Now, the Rest of the Story.
[001] "Take me out to the ball game. Take me out with the
crowd. Buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks. I don't
care if I never come back."
[002] That tune made its debut at Brooklyn's Amphion Theatre, a
vaudeville stage, in 1908.
[003] And of course, as you know, it has since become the
unofficial anthem of America's national sport.
[004] I think it's time that you meet the man who wrote the
music and the lyrics: Albert Von Tilzer and Jack
Norworth.
[005] Albert was one of the most important popular composers of
the early 1900's.
[006] His real name was Gumm, G U M M--he changed it to Von
Tilzer for his songwriting career, and you know the
latter became such a celebrated name that Albert's four
brothers adopted it as well.
[007] Now, his musical credits include "Put your arms around
me, Honey. Hold me tight." and "I'll be with you in apple
blossom time."
[008] And yet, when he died in 1956 at the age of 78, the New
York Times obituary began: "Albert Von Tilzer, composer
of 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game.'"
[009] And likewise, lyricist Jack Norworth, who wrote the words
to more than 3,000 tunes. He's primarily associated with
that one song, "Take me out to the ball game."
[010] Jack began as a vaudeville entertainer while still in his
teens.
[011] Shortly thereafter, moved up, and on to the Ziegfeld
Follies.
[012] It was Jack who gave Take Me Out to the Ball Game its
premiere performance in 1908.
[013] The new baseball opera struck out during the night and
day that day.
[014] For some reason, the Amphion's afternoon audience was
just not inspired by a song glorifying a sport.
[015] Jack almost gave up on the number, but he decided to give
it one more try at the evening performance.
[016] Literally and figuratively, it was the difference of
night and day.
[017] Recalled Jack Norworth a half century later: "The evening
crowd ate it up, homerun!"
[018] That same year, Jack introduced another classic to the
world, his own "Shine on Harvest Moon."
[019] And yet, there is what Jack called an old hunker paper on
display at the Cooperstown Baseball Museum, and on it:
the firsthand scribbled draft of the lyrics for which
Jack Norworth is best known today, "Take me out to the
ball game, take me out with the crowd."
[020] So, that 's the story of Albert and Jack, turn-of-century
minstrel and poet, but that's not the rest of the story.
[021] Albert and Jack shared a secret.
[022] It concerns their individual qualifications as joint
creators of baseball's one and only anthem.
[023] I will give you a hint.
[024] One summer morning in 1908, Jack Norworth was riding an
uptown New York subway.
[025] He glanced at the advertisement placards above the seats.
[026] He spotted one placard that read "Come to the Polo
Grounds."
[027] And that sign in a subway, according to Jack Norworth,
that was his circuitous inspiration for the lyrics that
made him famous, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."
[028] You see neither Norworth nor Von Tilzer were baseball
fans.
[029] In fact, Von Tilzer saw his first baseball game more than
20 years after he wrote the music, and Jack North
ventured to a baseball game for the first time in 1942,
almost 30 years after he wrote the words.
[030] At the time baseball's unofficial anthem was written, at
that time, its authors had never seen a baseball game,
never!
[031] And now you know the rest of the story.

[000] 지금 the Rest of the Story입니다.
'Take Me Out to the Ball Game(야구 경기 나를
(Take me out to
the ball game.")
[012] Take Me Out to the Ball Game
음유시인이자 시인, 그러나 그것은 the rest of the story가
[031] 그리고 이제야 당신은 the rest of the story를 알고
