A tragedy at Cinema6:
Who killed Tim Robinson Amos Spencer?
-Kelly Claire Jeong
“Rrrrrrrrr, Rrrrrrrrr”
“Hello,” I picked the phone. “Clarissa Rose is speaking.”
“Hey! Claire, it’s me, Henry,” a very exciting voice shouted.
“Yes, I can see that,” I laughed a bit. “By the way, it’s Clarissa, please.”
“Claire is much friendlier, you know,” Henry said.
“I don’t want to be called ‘Claire’ by anyone,” I grumbled but I was also smiled as I pour out coffee.
“Hey, I’m not anyone!” he shouted again.
I knew what was coming next. I pulled the phone a little bit away from my ear, still smiling. I had a sip of coffee. He was still murmuring like ‘We have been good friends since we were 7 years old and you always act like you never have realized it’ and all the same stuff.
“OK!” I interrupted. “And you’re calling me for….?”
“Oh, yeah, that’s right. Ah…… Let me see. I got two movie tickets. It’s a movie called The Street of Gangsters. I’m sure you’ve heard of it, haven’t you? It’s so great! I really wanted to see it. It’s 2p.m at Cinema6. I’ll buy the popcorn.” Henry said without any moment to breath.
“Ah……. Henry, actually…….” I hesitated, thinking of finish the book I’ve been reading.
“Please don’t tell me that you’re busy. Please, please, please!”
There was a second thought. I always let him down. I nodded even if he couldn’t see me. I haven’t seen him for almost a month. I couldn’t make him so disappoint anymore.
“Actually…… yes,” there was a short screaming of Henry. “I’ll be there by half past one. You buy the popcorn, I’ll get coke. Ok?”
“Ok, love you, Claire,” than he hanged up.
I was walking past lots of shops on the way Cinema6. Every time I come here, I feel like there is no one in here, in this building is like me. Everyone looked so happy and live. However, my life always has been busy. It has to be perfect and in the plan. Maybe it was the first time that I didn’t follow my schedule.
“Claire! You’re early!” Henry ran toward me.
“No, I just arrived, actually.”
“Hey, you look different!” Henry glanced at me. “Is that just because I haven’t seen you for a really long time? I mean, it’s almost a month, you know.”
I smiled but I felt sorry. I was sorry. I couldn’t say sorry, though. I didn’t know why.
“Shall we go in?” he said, realizing that I was feeling bad about this situation.
“Of course,” I answered. “Got your movie tickets?”
He chuckled, “don’t you dare treat me as a baby, Clarissa Emma Rose.”
I just laughed.
There were lots of people in the cinema. It was the biggest room as well. A huge screen was on the wall and the shop was at the back of cinema. Henry and I got popcorn and coke from there and sat on our seats. The seats were almost full. I looked down my watch.
“You won’t regret, Claire. This movie is the greatest ever,” Henry seemed really excited. “Well, I haven’t seen it yet but there was a documentary about this movie on TV the other night and all review was……”
“AAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!”
A loud and squeaky screaming was resounded.
Soon the light turned on. Everyone looked around to find a girl who screamed. It didn’t take too long to find her who was standing right next to a man. Technically, he was not ‘just man’. It was a dead man. I mean…… a dead body. There were a few more screams. Henry gasped. I had to be calm. I took a deep breath. Now it was time for me, Clarissa Rose, the detective.
“Everyone, sitting down pleases,” I shouted and showed my ID card. “I’m a detective and will be in charge for this case till the police came along. It won’t take too long police to get here. Now, listen to me. The door will be shut and you can’t go out or move your space until we find much information we need,” as I expected, there were lots of complaints. I raised my voice a bit more. “I know you’re not here for this horrible accident but a good movie which got the best reviews recently. And I’m really sorry for that. However, a man just died! You can’t just leave it as it is. We need to find out the reason. Please, we need your help.”
It was a very silent moment. I walked to the girl who screamed. She was sobbing now in a panic.
“Hi. I’m Clarissa Rose as I told you there. I know you are very shocked but you need to help us. Ok?” she nodded. “You need to tell us what has happened and everything you have seen and heard.”
She nodded again.
“Okay,” I took my pen and notebook from my handbag. “Can you introduce yourself?”
She said nothing. I waited. There was another very silent moment.
“All right, then. What’s your name?”
“It’s Vicky. Vicky Walt,” she looked pale. “I’m 21 now and Tim is my friend.”
“Tim? Is it his name?” she nodded. I was a little bit surprised, to be honest. She looked so young but she was only 2 years younger than me.
“It’s Tim Spencer,” she said.
“All right. Uh…… would you like me to call you Miss Walt or……?”
“Vicky, please,” Vicky answered. At this very moment someone touched my shoulder.
“Claire, the police has just arrived,” Henry whispered.
“I didn’t know you were here, Miss Rose,” Steve Mueller, the police inspector said as he coming down stairs. Other policeman started to look after people. “I thought you were very busy in these days, Miss Rose.”
“Mr. Mueller. How do you do?” I shook his hand.
“Very good. There wasn’t any big accident or murder for a few days. It’s a bit shame that the record has broken.” I smiled forcibly and turned my face to one of the investigators.
“Would you like to check his body and identification?” I said. “And report me, please.”
“Yes, Miss.”
“Oh, by the way, Mr. Mueller,” I continued. “There is a girl who found the man dead first. Her name is Vicky Walt. Obviously her full name is Victoria Walt. She is Mr. Spencer’s friend.”
“Have you talked to her, already?” Mr. Mueller asked.
“Yes. She just told me his name,” I said. “I should get her a cup of tea, if you excused me.”
“Sure.” He said.
“Let’s have a cup of hot tea, Vicky,” I called her. She followed me.
Now police started to get people obviously innocent out of the cinema. Of course they didn’t forget to check their identifications.
“Can you tell me what happened, Vicky?” I had a sip of green tea.
“I…… was right back here before the movie started. I got two cokes and gave one to him,” she said in a worried voice. “When it got dark, I got those cokes from the person at the shop and gave it to him. It was so dark so I couldn’t find the way well. When I eventually sit on my seat I was trying to say that I’m scared to see this movie. But there was no answer. So I thought he was angry. I tried to make him see me but he was making weird noise.”
I dead stopped to write these things down.
“Hold on a second. A coke?” I asked suspiciously. “You got him a coke?”
“Yes. Because the other day, we had a game and I lost. So I was to buy his coke.”
“Where? Where did you get that coke, then?” I asked.
“I told you I was……” Vicky moved her lips.
“Miss Rose,” the investigator came to me. “We found this.” And he held a cup printed ‘Cinema6’ the same cup as mine and Henry’s for sure.
“And the cause of the death is……?”
“He was poisoned by Potassium cyanide,” he said. “We searched, Miss, but in this cup there was no Potassium cyanide but a very small amount of acid. It’s not enough to kill one fat man. You might get diarrhea or stomachache for this but…… to kill a person? No, it’s nonsense.”
“This is going to be very tricky,” I muttered. “Would you please get all the people who work at the shop?”
“Sure, Miss.”
“Thomas?” all of sudden, Vicky shouted to a man who was passing us. The man called Thomas was very tall and thin man. “Were you here for a whole time?”
“Yes, I was, Vicky,” Thomas answered. “Why are you shouting, though?”
“How dare you!” Vicky shouted furiously. “It’s him! He killed Tim! He did!” she pointed at him.
“What the heck are you talking about,
“Vicky, relax. Your breath is too fast,” I tried to make her relax. But she was still panting. “Do you know him, Vicky?”
“Of course, I do! He has hated Tim for 5years. Since Tim got the scholarship at the high school,” she panted again. “He hated Tim because he didn’t get the scholarship but Tim did!”
“No, I didn’t!” he shouted. “I mean, yes I did. But no more! We are good friends now. Didn’t you see when I gave him an aromatic for his car? We thought that was very special because it proves us that we became friends again!”
“Aha! I got it. It’s that stupid aromatic thing, Clarissa. That was poisoned,” Vicky said like a mad person.
“That’s enough, Vicky. You don’t know anything about him as a suspect. And by the way, you are also one of the suspects, now,” I said very coldly. Vicky seemed very shocked. “Ok, sorry about that Thomas. Let me know about you.”
“I’m Thomas Lee. I’m 21. And I’m also friend of Tim’s.
“Thank you, you need to participate in this investigate. I’m so sorry if it bothers you. But there is no other way when there was a murder in a big place.”
“I’ll participate, of course,” Thomas said. Vicky didn’t even look at him. She looked so mad.
“Miss Rose. These three are the people who were working today,” he said, pointing back.
“Thank you very much,” I stood up. “Now, Vicky. Who did you buy your coke from?”
“…… The woman in the middle,” Vicky answered.
“When you bought it, Vicky, were the other people doing their jobs?”
“They were taking other people’s orders, I think,” Vicky tried to remember. “But she took my order.”
“May I ask your name?”
“It’s Emily Francis, I’m the manager of Cinema6 shop and also am here because I sold cokes to this lady and a man who died for sure,” she said.
“That’s right,” I smiled. “Now, I think this will be my last favor. Would you call Mr. Mueller? I think we are ready to solve this mystery. I need everyone who are related this to be here. The murder is in here. Someone is lying. That’s for sure, huh?”

WHO KILLED TIM SPENCER?
“Hey, are you reading my notes?” I snapped him as I snatch my note out of Henry’s hand. “Don’t even think about it.”
“I’m sorry. I just, it was on this table…… so……,” he murmured. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be,” I said quickly. “It’s, it’s not that important. I just want to keep privacy. Um…… is everyone here?”
“I think so, Miss Rose,” Mr. Mueller answered. “Shall we begin?” I stood up
“Potassium cyanide is a very interesting element. It loves water. As soon as you take about 1/5 teaspoon, your liver, intestine and esophagus will be dried. It absorbs all the water and makes you die. And that’s how Mr. Spencer died,” I said in a low voice. “But how? As you all heard, there was no Potassium cyanide in the cup Tim Spencer drank. It could be an aromatic which Thomas gave him. We will check it in a minute. However……, what I have been thinking is…… an ice.”
“I beg your pardon?” Mr. Mueller shouted.
“I’m not sure why or how…… but, murderer used an ice. I’m quite sure about that. It’s the only thing that can make time trick and make no Potassium cyanide in the cup.”
“Doesn’t it mean I put ices with Potassium cyanide in the cup?” Emily asked
“No, it doesn’t. It could be, but no,” I smiled a bit. “Shall we go out for a second to check Mr. Spencer’s car?”
“Well, this is Tim’s Sonata, Hyundai. You can open the aromatic if you want to and you can also check it.” Thomas said.
“Thank you for you cooperation.”
“You’re welcome.”
One of the investigators got in there and checked it.
“No……, it’s just a normal aromatic. There is nothing wrong with it.”
“Oh, really?” I said. I determined. I knew the murderer. Oh, wait. But how? “Can you take it out and do a more accurate investigate, please? To make sure.”
“Yes, Miss.”
I put my hand on temple. How am I going to explain the reason……? All of sudden it started to rain. It was just a shower. I looked around.
“Claire.” Something covered my sight. It was Henry. “You look tired a bit. Maybe it was a mistake to take you out here.”
“No, it’s not,” I said. “I actually was very thank you.”
He smiled and passed me a cup of coffee.
“Oh, thank you. It’s very sweet of you but I don’t put any sugar in it,” I said. “But you do. Didn’t you put sugar……?”
“I didn’t, actually. You always get cube sugars away when you get them at a coffee shop,” Henry smiled. “You always do that. It’s your habit.”
“My habit? You always have known my habit?” I almost screamed. If the murder knew Tim’s habit……, then I got it this time. And I didn’t need anymore moment to hesitate.
“I got it. I found out the murderer, Mr. Mueller,” my voice was trembled.
“The murderer is in here. Someone was lying obviously,” I pointed the three of them. “As I told you before, the murderer used an ice. He put Potassium cyanide in it and in the coke. So for that, the main suspects will be Vicky who carried it and Miss Francis who made it. However, if Miss Francis has put that ice in it, people would have realized. According to ask people who were there in the line, there were too many people so that she couldn’t do it in front of people.”
“But, Clarissa! If I put potassium cyanide in it, how would I know if it’s his and mine? It was so dark! If I put that ice before I gave it to him, he would realize it, wouldn’t he?”
“If you’ve put ice in yours as well, he wouldn’t. You carried it in your clothes, Vicky, and put them right before the movie started at the back. You gave it to him and when he had it and died. You took them out of the cup very quickly and screamed.”
“You’re writing a novel. How would I do that? And what if the ice melts? How would I know he would eat it?”
“If you knew his habit, you could,” I continued. “If you knew Mr. Spencer’s habit is chewing the ice first. You could.”
There was a shock on her face.
“I couldn’t make it sure until we came out. But when it started to rain, and saw you never wear your hood, I was sure. Your hair is curly, isn’t it? You should cover your hair. I mean, that’s what girls do. A girl who has curly hair never tries to get their hair wet. But you didn’t. Why?” I asked. “You’ll be able to know if someone checks your hood out. Aren’t I right, Vicky?”
“Oh, no,” she fell down. “Don’t touch my hood. I know what is in there.”
Silence, again. I tried not to go mad. Now, she conceded her crime. There was no more mystery. I sighed.
“Tim always has been my friend, since we were 6,” Vicky started to confess. “But I……, I tried to get this year’s scholarship so eagerly. Tim didn’t even try for that. He just studied as usual. But me! I studied, studied and studied until I got exhausted. But guess who got the scholarship. It was Tim again,” she started to sob. “I also knew that Thomas became friend with Tim again. I was happy about it. But, but……, Tim didn’t even need that scholarship! For me, if I didn’t get that, I’d not be able to attend this university. I told him. I begged him. But he never listened! A boy has been friend for 15years!” she added. “I thought it was a perfect crime.”
“There is no such word as perfect crime, Vicky,” I stood up.
“This…… this isn’t right,” Thomas shook his head. “I thought, I thought we could be friends again. I believed I could understand him, now. I now can believe there is more important than scholarship, Vicky.”
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” Vicky said.
“What was it all about,” Emily complained. “Can I go home now?”
I glared at her. I nodded. She stormed away.
“That’s amazing. Woman sense, huh? Got the murderer for suspicion of a girl who doesn’t put the hood on it when it rains,” Mr. Mueller murmured. “It was beautiful.”
“No, it was not,” I said, feeling sad. “It was a tragedy.”
“Here is one quote; every single case has stories. Whoever tells the best story wins. But that’s only for a court,” Mr. Mueller said. “You got not to be biased, Clarissa.”
“I know,” I turned.
“Shall we get going, Henry?” I called Henry.
“Cheer up, Clarissa!” Henry put his arm around my waist. I winced but didn’t say anything. “I solved the half, didn’t I?”
“You did three quarters, Henry.” I giggled.
“Now you laugh!” he shouted. “Can I call you Claire now?”
“You always did,” it was a bit awkward but I smiled. “And that’s your habit.”
“I won’t if you don’t like it,” he said.
“No, actually I like it. Claire is much friendlier, you know,” I put my arm around his waist as well. He winced this time. “I’m so sorry that I didn’t call you first for a really long time.”
“You’re already forgiven,” Henry grinned. “Come on, there will be movie review program on TV tonight. I don’t want to miss it again,”
