Translated Feedback of Jin Young Ssangkum Ryu Australian Haedong Kumdo events
into German, French, Russian, English.
It is organized and planned
by Stuart Campbell, JY-HK Rep of Jin Young Ssangkum Ryu Australian Haedong Kumdo
from 10th to 16th Dec. 2013.
In the July of 2014, National HK Champ and Winter camp etc. will be organized and held.
The overall feedback for this seminar
from 10th to 16th Dec. 2013
both KI MU and Ssangkum Ryu can be expressed in one word,
Natural.
My experience with Grand Master Kim during the time of his visit was a very enjoyable one. His teaching was easy and continuous, coming in the form of discussion as often as not. Our discussions ranged from the essence of humanity, religion, the natural way of the universe and other such philosophical topics through to the history of Korean sword martial arts, traditional and modern, in Korea, and the origins and essences of martial arts as a whole. Other topics included the principal of listening to your body. Not just in training, but in everything we do in life. Work, Food, sleep, toilet, exercise…all.
The physical training was a very different experience for me and also fell in line with the informal lessons on philosophy. The training was not “easy” but was easy…… one could say natural. The structure and essence of the training was certainly not forced.
This way of training physically, in a natural way, helped the body to know what it should do. There was, of course, some physical exertion but very little residual pain even after a couple of days of 4 or 5 hours continuous training.
Explanations of why were easy and helpful, and filled in, for me personally, some gaps in knowledge that had been missing for more than 10 years.
The essence or concepts of Kumbup training and Kyok Kum training were again easy….Natural! Make easy, flowing movements.
Don’t be rigid. Follow your body and
let the body and weight of the sword work for you……
don’t swing with your arms and shoulders……
Keep all one line…..
Don’t break the flow of energy….
Just move gently…..
Keep the focus on the front inside of the foot and big toe….
Breathe….
These ideas are just beginning stage ideas, very basic,
but the basic must be right to take the level higher.
Perhaps the most interesting and important thing for me was the realization that the Kumbup is not important. This is just the vehicle, and the prescribed set of movements is irrelevant. Kumbup is not important, but it is important…..
This is the truth.
Ki Mu training is also the same.
Three steps to the KI MU are,
Relax and feel it
Focus and see it
Realize and do it!
Most of us are in the beginning stage, where relaxing is hard, feeling the energy can be even harder. We live in a time where these concepts may seem un-real. When you open your mind, or “think out of the box”, you can feel the energy from your own body and others.
Stage two “Focus and see it”, is very hard I think.
But perhaps it is hard because I think!
Stage 3 “realize and do it”, is probably going to be the hardest but also the easiest, and this is about all life. When Grand Master Kim told me this I could immediately see the truth (or perhaps just the outline of the truth). But seeing the truth, understanding it, and following it are three very different things!
Our seminar on the Gold Coast, through natural process, was focused around sparring. And we learned that the principals of Kumbup apply naturally to sparring. Make easy, flowing movements.
Don’t be rigid.
Follow your body and let the body and weight of the sword work for you……
don’t swing with your arms and shoulders……
Keep all one line…..
Don’t break the flow of energy….
Just move gently…..
Keep the focus on the front inside of the foot and big toe….
Breathe….
But mostly, relax and enjoy!
Also we did some basic Ki Mu exercises, and perhaps one of the most important things to come from this for me, was the concept of letting go. When you have finished borrowing the energy, let it go… give it back. This also applies to the sword, when you finish a cut, let it go and move into the next movement. Keep the energy moving until you have finished borrowing it, and then let it go, give it back.
Our Melbourne seminar was focused on the Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Kumbup. Through two sword training we began learning the correct movement and flow of the body and sword. This naturally then led to KI Mu and again the principals of energy flow. Participants put the principals into practice with some sparring to finish off a very enjoyable experience!
I would like to finish this feedback report by saying that “natural” is a reference to many things and many ways.
Natural, nature, naturally, these things cannot be escaped. Our modern ways sometimes try to bend what is natural to fit what is convenient. But perhaps if we stop looking for a way to make things easier, then they will be easier. A very basic concept, and one which I was fortunate enough to discuss at some length with Grand master Kim, is that of doing the right thing, of how our actions are boomerangs…..
My wife has a poster on the fridge that says
“Speak Kind Words
Think good thoughts
Do good deeds”
This is a Buddhist concept, and although we are not Buddhist, it is one my family tries to live by. It seems simple. Just three rules, and if we could all live by those three little rules, then naturally life would be harmonious and happy.
Even as I sit here typing this, my children have begun to fight amongst themselves in the back ground, which is quite probably very natural!
But if I let it get to me (and it is starting to!)
it will possibly lead to not good thoughts,
not good deeds and certainly not good words!
It is a very simple idea but very difficult to follow….
Please try it!
Thank you Grand Master Kim for your teaching and instruction
from “Down Under”!
¡Naturales!
Haz movimientos sencillos que fluyan. No estes rigido.
Relajate y siente Concentrate y ve Date cuenta y haz!
No estes rigido.
‘Di palabras amables Piensa buenos pensamientos Haz cosas buenas’

Under Down”

Bericht vom 2013 Jin Young Ssangkum
Ryu Haedong Kumdo Australian Seminar
Vielen Dank an Grossmeister Kim fur seinen Unterricht
und seine Instruktionen
von "Down Under"!
