Today I would like to bring up the subject of creativity. My experience as an artist, playwright, humanities teacher, and co translator of Korean literature has over the years stimulated my interest in the creative process. I will begin by sharing a few thoughts I have about Korean literature and Korean creativity that is based on seminars I have participated in at the Korean Literature Translation Institute, on research findings, and on my own experience. What will be presented here is meant to stimulate the discussions we will have during our session.
At a seminar at the KLTI in Seoul I was asked what I thought of Korean literature. Well, to begin with I appreciate its earthiness and the deep, warm, and passionate emotions it expresses. I appreciate what it reveals of the Korean soul and spirit but also what it reveals of the universal spirit that we all share. I also like how it often expresses and reveals traditional Asian values, ideals, customs, and Asian life philosophy.
But as is well known, there is a general lack of interest in Korean literature outside of Korea and that Korean literature is considered marginal literature in world literature. Furthermore, some say that Korean literature is not up to world standards. What are some possible reasons for this?
하지만 잘 알려진 것처럼 한국문학은 한국 밖에서는 그다지 많은 호응을 얻지 못하고 있으며 세계 문학 속에서 변방의 문학으로 취급을 받고 있습니다. 한 술 더 떠 일부는 한국문학이 세계적 기준에 미치지 못한다고 말합니다. 한국문학이 이런 대우를 받게 된 이유가 무엇일까요?
1. Imitation and lack of originality. Too often Korean literature imitates Western literature and is not original. For example, one novel I read by a well-known novelist obviously was an imitation of European existentialist literature. And a playwright obviously imitated Western Absurdist Theater, Bertolt Brecht, and Beckett.
모방에 따른 독창성의 부족입니다. 한국문학은 서구 문학을 모방하는 경우가 많으며 작가의 독창적 창작물이 아닌 경우가 너무나 많습니다. 예를 들어 얼마 전 제가 읽은 유명한 한국작가의 소설은 유럽의 실존주의 문학의 모방작이었습니다. 그리고 한 한국인 희곡작가가 베르톨트 브레히트와 베케트의 부조리극을 정말 그대로 모방한 것을 보았습니다.
2. Generally speaking, Korean literature lacks a high degree of world-class imagination, depth of vision, and spiritual resonance. It lacks the masterpiece quality that makes you want to read the work over and over again, where after each reading you get more and more out of it.
일반적으로 세계 최상급의 문학작품이 갖는 상상력, 비전에 대한 깊이, 영적인 울림이 부족한 경향이 강합니다. 일반적으로 말해서 한국문학은 시간을 두고 읽고 또 읽어도 읽을 때마다 얻는 것이 많은 문학사의 걸작품들이 갖는 자질이 부족합니다.
3. Han. Han means to have bitter feelings, enduring one’s fate, having a grudge against God, Tao, the Universal Spirit. And there is an individual’s han, a people’s han, a nation’s han and a race’s han. But I think there is too much han and over stressing sorrow, suffering, darkness, despair in Korean literature. I once read a Korean novel in translation and after 80 or so pages of han I was ready to put the book down. There’s a need to balance han with other aspects of human existence.
4. I have read much Korean literature in translation and when it’s bad it’s often due to too literal a translation, too word for word translation. Word for word translation often ends up being awkward translations in the target language. Unfortunately, too often Korean authors and eval!uators of translations stress close, word for word translation. Furthermore, under a project initiated by KLTI, Korean professors of English literature and foreign scholars reviewed English translations of Korean literature and their conclusion was that “The overall quality of translations of Korean literature into English is far from satisfactory.” One finding was that many well-known Korean translators got low scores. One reason for this had to do with the “we can do it alone” attitude of Korean translators since it was found that “The most reliable translation came from joint work, which highlights the need to have more projects involving experts from Korea and English speaking countries.”
Of the criticisms of Korean literature I believe the critical one is its lack of a high degree of originality and creative imagination. I once read of a Columbia University professor saying of his Korean graduate students that they are good at taking tests and memorizing material but that they lack creative thinking abilities. So what I want to do now is say a few things about creativity and the creative process. Since our time is short and I do not have here in Korea my lecture notes and files on the subject, I will limit myself to briefly touching on some of the things I have spoken about in semester long seminars on creativity that I have given at universities in America, China, and Korea.
To begin with, it is interesting to note the different experiences artists and writers have had with the creative process. For instance, Rainer Rilke, the Austrian poet, experienced a creativity crisis for 10 years but afterwards completed his masterpiece, The Duino Elegies. Also, many artists and writers have had their heyday as creators in their early years but Michelangelo will to create persisted to old age and Cicero, the Roman philosopher and statesman, began his major writing at 60 years of age. Plotinus, another Roman philosopher, wrote books after turning 50. In contrast, Arthur Rimbaud, the French poet, wrote his poems in his late teens and gave up creative writing before he was 20. Some writers finish works quickly while others take many years. For example, Jack Kerouac, the American novelist, completed the first version of On the Road during a three week session of spontaneous writing and wrote the final draft in twenty days while James Joyce took 17 years to write Finnegan’s Wake - and I have read where only a few thousand people have read the work, considered by scholars to be a 20th century masterpiece. And Flaubert, the French 19th century novelist, sometimes took a week to complete one page and once wrote in one of his letters that he spent the whole day struggling to write a couple of sentences of his novel Madam Bovary.
Creativity refers to originating something new. And as we know, there are four main stages of creativity: preparation, incubation, illumination, and implementation. Here we will deal with the first stage – preparation, the stage where we stimulate our creativity and prepare ourselves for creative work.
창조란 새로운 것을 처음으로 만들어 내는 것을 말합니다. 그리고 알다시피 이 창조는 다음의 네 가지 단계를 거치는데 이는 준비, 부화, 조명(통찰), 실행이 그것입니다. 오늘은 이 중 첫 번째 단계인 준비, 즉 창조적인 작업을 가능하게 하는 창조적 사고를 어떻게 자극할 것인지에 대해 이야기를 해 보겠습니다.
What follows are some of the ways to stimulate creativity, that is, ways of freeing the imagination, of manifesting and making visible the invisible world of our imagination, of bringing things together into a new whole, a new ordering, ways of making associations and discovering connections between things, of giving birth. Number 13, the ideas and thoughts section of what follows, is especially important and will take up most of our time.
1. Readings. Read poems, biographies, literary quarterlies, newspapers, magazines, the classics in Korean and world literature, history books, philosophy books, books about mysticism, spirituality, sacred literature, ethics, mythology, science, art, etc.
독서: 시, 전기, 문학 계간지, 역사서, 철학서, 신비주의와 영성에 관한 서적, 성전(聖 典), 윤리학서, 신화, 과학, 예술서 등을 읽으십시오.
2. Travel. Breaking our routine and visiting different countries or different parts of our own country, meeting new people, experiencing new worlds stimulates the imagination.
여행: 일상을 떠나서 다른 나라나 자국 내의 다른 지방을 여행하여 새로운 사람들과 만나고 새로운 세상을 경험하는 것은 상상력을 고무시킵니다.
3. Drinking and Elixirs. Moderate amount of drinking and certain elixirs, such as marijuana, short circuits the rational mind and frees the imaginative-creative mind in us. Many writers and artists are known to have stimulated their creativity by drinking and taking elixirs, among them Ernest Hemingway, Samuel Coleridge, and Jean Cocteau.
알코올과 약물: 적당량의 술과 마리화나 같은 특정 약물은 우리의 합리적 사고를 순간적으로 중단시키고 상상력과 창의력이 펼쳐질 수 있는 정신적으로 자유로운 환경을 제공합니다. 많은 작가들과 예술가들이 이 같은 방법을 통해서 그들의 창의력을 향상시켰는데 그런 사람들 중에는 어니스트 헤밍웨이, 사무엘 콜리지, 장 콕토 등이 있습니다.
4. Mystical Experience. Having an experience of an altered state of consciousness, of experiencing a deeper dimension of our mind, of experiencing the spiritual world and spiritual realities has a lasting affect on our creative soul and deepens our understanding of existence. It can lead to a new creative stage in life. This has been the case with a number of artists and writers, including Hermann Hesse, the German Nobel Prize winning novelist.
5. Stimulating conversation with people from different walks of life. Such conversation can deepen and expand our understanding of life and our humanity.
자신과 전혀 다른 삶을 살아온 사람들과의 대화는 상상력을 자극합니다. 그런 대화는 삶과 인간에 대한 우리의 이해를 깊게 하고 확대시킵니다.
6. Brainstorming. Just let ideas thoughts, images, etc. flow. Don’t censor. This is not the time to judge or edit. This short-circuits the creative process. Jot down. Sketch. Keep the flow going.
브레인스토밍(자유로운 사고): 생각과 이미지들이 자신의 머릿속에서 마음껏 흐르도록 내버려 두십시오. 검열하지 마십시오. 판단이나 편집을 가하지 마십시오. 그것은 창조과정을 중단시킬 뿐입니다. 머릿속에 떠오르는 대로 메모를 하십시오. 스케치를 하십시오. 그리고 계속해서 이 같은 상태로 물 흐르듯 흐르십시오.
7. Life Experiences. Living a full, active, adventurous life, one filled with unusual happenings, stimulates the creative imagination.
삶의 경험들: 드문 사건들로 가득한 활동적이고 모험적인 삶을 가능한 한 최대치로 사십시오. 그것이 창조적인 상상력을 고무시킬 것입니다.
8. Music, Art, Dance, Theatre Plays. All the arts can increase our appreciation of beauty and the creative mind and stimulate us in our creative endeavors.
음악, 예술, 춤, 연극: 어떤 형태가 되었던 예술은 미에 대한 우리의 감상의 영역을 넓히고 창의적 마음을 고무시킵니다.
9. Solitude and Quietude. Being alone, surrounded by silence, can quiet the rational mind and opens us to our creative spirit.
혼자 있기와 고요: 고요 속에서 혼자 있는 것은 우리의 합리적 마음을 잠잠하게 하고 우리 내부의 창조적 영혼이 눈을 뜨게 합니다.
10. Nature. Nature has inspired the writings of William Wordsworth and the Romantics in England, Henry Thoreau, and the Transcendentalists in America, and the Taoists in China to name just a few. To be in nature and in the wilderness can still the mind, inspire us with beauty, and give us insight into the laws of life. It is a source of mystery, revelation, a vessel of spirit.
자연: 자연은 글에 영감을 불어넣는데 윌리암 워즈워즈, 헨리 데이빗 쏘로우와 같은 영국의 낭만파, 미국의 초월론자들, 그리고 중국의 노장철학 신봉자들은 자연에서 영감을 얻은 아주 극소수의 예에 불과합니다.
11. Dreams. Most of us have heard of artists and writers having dreams where stories and images appeared that later became works of art. Yes, dreams can reach our subconscious minds and beyond. They can be revelatory and inspirational.
꿈: 많은 예술가들과 작가들이 꿈에서 본 이미지를 나중에 작품으로 형상화시키는 경우를 우리는 익히 알고 있습니다. 꿈은 이처럼 우리의 잠재의식은 물론 그 이상까지 작용을 합니다. 꿈은 예시적이고 영감을 불러일으키는 작용을 할 수 있습니다.
12. Life Philosophy. Our life style and how we live our lives, our life philosophy, obviously affects us as artists and writers. Let me offer an example of a lifestyle many artists and writers in history have lived - the bohemian lifestyle. I gave a lecture at Buak Colony a year and a half ago about Bohemianism and the Counterculture but here I will only briefly outline a lifestyle that has been the seed ground of much literature and art.
A bohemian is a non-conformist, a maverick, and a wanderer from the prevailing values and conventional lifestyles of mainstream society. One major stream in Bohemia flows from a romantic code of existence, a quest for self-realization and a heightened sense of life, a quest to expand consciousness, to cleanse the doors of perception, to break free from mental-emotional-social shackles that keep us from being most alive. It is about liberation from materialist culture and entrance into a more meaningful vital life, about living in harmony with the creative laws of existence, about becoming an artist of life and transforming self and daily life into a work of art.
The poet Allen Ginsberg was one of America’s archetypal bohemians. At a Beatnik generation celebration (Beatnik is another name for the Bohemians in the 1950s in America) Ginsberg spoke of the beatnik scene and “candor, spontaneity, suspicion of hierarchical authority…and a sacramental dedication to a bloodless revolution, a world revolution,” by which he meant a spiritual revolution. Jack Kerouac spoke for the bohemian tradition when he had Sal Paradise in his novel On the Road say “The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn and never say a commonplace thing but burn, burn like fabulous roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars….”
Not that long ago I listened to an American lawyer in his late 50s with a loving family and successful career behind him tell me, “You know, I’ve made a good living in my life but I never really lived.”
얼마 전 나는 사랑스런 가족을 거느린 50대 후반의 미국인 변호사와 이야기를 한 적이 있습니다. 그가 말하기를, “나는 소위 말해서 편안하고 풍족한 삶을 가족에게 제공해왔습니다. 하지만 난 결코 내 자신의 삶을 살아보지 못했습니다.”
In bohemia ultimate success in life is never having to say “ I never really lived” and being able to say at deathbed time what James Joyce wrote as the last word of the last paragraph on the last page of the human odyssey that is Ulysses – “Yes.”
보헤미안에게 궁극적인 삶의 성공은 결코 “나는 내 삶을 살아보지 못했다”라고 후일 말하는 삶이 아니라 임종의 자리에서 제임스 조이스가 그의 인간사로 가득한 여정을 그린 책 율리시즈의 마지막 페이지의 마지막 문단의 마지막 단어로 쓴 것처럼 자신이 살아온 인생을 향해, “Yes!”라고 말할 수 있는 삶이라고 할 수 있습니다.
13. Ideas and Thoughts. Ideas and thoughts can rouse the imagination, lead to creative inspiration, and set you dreaming. Here are some to think about.
사상과 생각: 사상과 생각들은 상상력을 유발하여 창조적 영감으로 이끌고 꿈꾸게 합니다. 다음은 이와 관련 몇 가지 생각해 볼 것들입니다.
· The root meaning and definition of conscience, education, genius. Often the etymology of a word and its root meaning has a spiritual source and is opposite of its contemporary meaning. For example, today the word education has to do with knowledge coming from outside oneself. But the root meaning of education means, “to draw out,” knowing and wisdom coming from within one’s spiritual self. The meaning in Latin of genius refers to “a guardian deity or spirit which watches over a person from birth”, with the creations of that person having a spiritual source. The root meaning of the word conscience has to do with the Spirit speaking through you, guiding you to performing right action, action that will contribute to your spiritual growth and to your Awakening.
· People look for utopia, heaven, and paradise out there somewhere. But consider that utopia/heaven is not a place but a space, not out there but within us, a dimension of consciousness. Indeed, the root meaning of Utopia means, “no place.” And when we discover heaven within us, we will then discover it is everywhere if we have but the eyes to see, as Dostoevsky, the Russian novelist, once wrote. Christians will quote from the Gospels: “The Kingdom of God cometh not from observation. Neither shall they say, Lo here! or Lo there! For behold the Kingdom of God is within you.”
· Wu Wei. The Chinese Taoist term means effortless action. It refers to us humans as not the doers of our actions but instruments, followers. We in tune ourselves to the creative spirit, the creative flow in life, the real doer. Ultimately, it is not my will but “Thy will be done.” We listen and we follow. My will and Tao’s will are one.
· Dark Night of the Soul. Sometimes suffering, a great crisis in our lives, can lead to deeper parts of us and to spiritual awakening. It can lead to letting go of old ways of being and open us to a new life. The Latin term “per aspera ad astra,” through trials to the stars,” refers to this possibility. Also, the Chinese character for crisis has two parts, one meaning danger and the other meaning opportunity.
· Epiphany. To experience an epiphany is to have an illumination, a mystical vision, an experience of the spiritual reality of life. There are a number of characteristics of the experience, among them an experience of oneness, timelessness, light, a love that pervades the universe, a feeling that you are more than your physical body, etc. Now such an experience can help us to better understand great literature and art, help us to decode cryptic utterances. For example, Dante in The Divine Comedy says, “He who knows that Light knows Eternity.” An epiphany experience helps us understand that that Light is not coming from one source but that it issues forth from every grain of sand in the universe. It is the Divine Light spoken of in all religious traditions, the Clear Light of Tibetan Buddhism, the Light Saint Augustine speaks of in his Confessions.
· Planetary Life as Sacred Ritual. The mission is to transform mundane daily life into sacred art where all one’s duties in the world seen as spiritual practice, as a meditation. It’s the “seva-sadhana,” the service worship, of the Hindus, the yogic practice of regarding all one’s duties to society and the world as sacred, to the end that every act of life on earth shall be performed with religious.
성스런 의식으로써의 일상생활. 문제는 매일의 세속적인 삶에서 부딪치는 작은 일상의 의무들을 명상과 같은 신성한 예술작업으로 바꾸는 일입니다. 그것은 세바 사다나(사심없는 수행)로 이는 힌두교의 요가 훈련으로 사회 또는 이 세상에서의 모든 개인의 의무를 신성한 것으로 받아들여서 일상의 모든 행위들을 종교적 숭배를 가지고 행하는 것입니다.
· No evolution but independent origination, spontaneous creation. Things do not evolve into their forms but just manifest from out of the cosmic depths, the void. Everything eternally exists. Interesting to note here that the Indian language, Hindi, does not have a word for “to become.” Things already exist and just materialize, manifest out of Brahman’s depths.
· Human creativity is an extension of the creative process of the universe. I remember William Blake, the poet and artist, somewhere said, “I myself do nothing. The Holy Spirit accomplishes all through me.” What creates a tree or a mountain or a flower also creates a painting or a novel. The creative spirit flows through nature and humans. We are not the doers but the instruments of the universe’s creative energy. Piet Mondrian, the artist, once wrote, “The position of the artist is humble. He is essentially a channel.”
