<듣기> 능력을 기르기 위한 음독 요령
소리내어 읽으면 발음이 좋아지고, 발음이 좋아지면 자기 발음이 미국인의 표준발음과 가까워지고, 액센트를 포함한 발음의 특성, 억양이 기억되게 되면 잘 알아들을 수 있게 된다. 소리 내어 읽되 하나의 의미단락(thought group)을 pause 없이 한꺼번에 발음해야 하며, 이때 Stress규칙에 따라 한 의미단락에는 반드시 제1강세가 하나밖에 올 수 없다는 원칙을 적용해서 읽어야 한다. 이 훈련을 오랫동안 하면 영어의 Rhythm이란 개념을 파악하게 되며 이 Rhythm이야말로 영어의 Speed Listening, Speed Reading의 제일 중요한 밑거름이 된다.

표현을 많이 알고 있지 않으면 이해할 수 없다
지극히 상식적인 얘기 같기는 하지만, 사람들은 듣는 기술만 익혀 발음만 식별할 수 있으면 Listening이 되는 것으로 오해하고 있다. 지금까지 눈으로 문자를 보면서 하는 읽기 중심의 영어 공부를 해온 사람들이 처음으로 ‘귀’로 들으려 하면 초기 단계에서는 발음 식별을 못하는 것이 우선적인 장애가 되지만, 이것이 극복되고 나도 남는 큰 문제는 알고 있는 표현의 수가 심각하게 부족하다는 것이다. 듣기를 잘하기 위해서는 정치, 경제, 문화, 사회 등 광범위한 분야에 대한 용어, 표현들을 알고 있어야 할 뿐만 아니라, 구어 표현들을 익혀야 한다. 기본동사 60개의 phrasal verb에 통달할 것
영어를 잘 하기 위해서는 약 3,000개에 달하는 영어의 2-word verb 중 사용빈도가 높은 1,000개 정도는 필수적으로 공부해 두어야 하며 활용까지 할 수 있어야 한다.
