Scientists say what they once classified as a star is actually a quasar with a black hole at its heart, growing so fast that it swallows the equivalent of a sun a day. The record-breaking quasar shines 500 trillion times brighter than our sun. While the quasar resembles a mere dot in images, scientists envision it's a ferocious place. The rotating disk around the quasar's black hole is like a cosmic hurricane with luminous, swirling gas and other matter gobbled up from stars. The quasar has been around since the early days of the universe and is 12 billion light years away. I'm Lisa Dwyer.
