Sofa Bed : A sofa bed is similar in function to a studio bed. It is a sofa first of all, which makes sitting more comfortable. It is usually 17 inches off the floor, whereas the studio bed may be as high as 22 inches. Unlike the studio bed, which rolls away from its frame, the sofa bed opens in accordion fashion from the seat. Since it unfolds, the sofa bed is less convenient and requires more space than the studio.
Parlors are generally equipped with sofa beds as part of a suite (Exhibit 3-12),
but a studio bed is usually a room unto itself. Sofa beds can be single, double, or even queen size, although the single is more like a three-quarter bed (48 by 75 inches).
Sofa beds are often called hide-a-beds and, thus, carry an H designation. Large rooms that contain both standard beds and hide-a-beds are junior suites.
All-suite rooms usually contain a sofa bed in the parlor portion of the unit (Exhibit 3-13).

Rollaway Bed (Cot) : A cot or rollaway is a portable utility bed that is added to the usual room furnishings on a temporary basis. A rollaway sleeps one person, and a comfortable one measures 34 by 75 inches and uses twin sheets. Cots usually come smaller--30 by 72 inches, with linen 63 by 99 inches.
Setting up cots in costly in housekeeping time. First of all, the cots are rarely located conveniently. Cot storage never seems to be high in the designer's priority.

Water Bed : In two decades, water beds jumped from a novelty to a hot item and then fell back again. The bed is rarely found in hotel rooms, although it offers an alternative to inner-spring and foam mattresses. The bed has a long history, dating back to the nomadic tribes of pre-Christianity, who filled goatskins with water. It was rediscovered by a Californian who first tried starch and gelatin as a filler. The water bed is still primarily a phenomenon of the western states.
Broader usage can be expected. Manufacturers have reduced the size and weight of the bed and overcome the wavelike motion with stabilizing chambers.

Futon : The Japanese futon, which is a cotton-quilted "bed," is another addition to the American sleeping design. Futons come in regular mattress sizes. The thick layers of batting are easily stored and readily adapted to service as a couch or bed.
And for the future? Possibly air beds -- air cushions that support the sleeper without bedframe, mattress, or linens.
