Technology is not only changing the way we shop, but also changing the way we play. In South Korea, golfers are finding a cheaper, and sometimes more convenient way to hit the links. ABC’s visitor reporter Joohee Cho reports from Seoul.
It’s a Friday night in Seoul, Korea. Seunghyo Park and his friends are all geared up to hit the greens. But they don’t need any sunscreen because this golf course is indoors. They’re going for a round of virtual reality golf. And they get to pick their simulated course from sixty other world’s best courses. Today they chose to see St. Andrews in Scotland. The computerized system shows distance hit and distance left for every shot as well as your swing speed and wind conditions. The swing mat too duplicates snoops and snaps. “It really feels like you are out there,” he says. Their game is wired into a nationwide network that connects thousands of screen golf cafes like this one. The online host, League of Screen Golf Championship, keeps track of scores and even offers real-time cash prizes to any lucky golfer hitting a hole-in-one. And estimated 200,000 Koreans play every day. “Fridays used to be huge drinking nights but this is our new thing like an adult arcade, much cheaper, definitely healthier,” he says. Virtual golf is much more affordable for the average Korean than the traditional golf. Considered rich men’s sport, golf is often manipulated as a form of bribery, by paying a round of golf for four people that will cost way over $1,200, but at the same time it is one of the most popular sports in Korea. Too many golfers, not enough golf courses, Koreans complain. Holiday season tee times are sold for thousands of dollars in the black market. Country club memberships cost from half a million to two million dollars. But here at the screen golf, it’s just $20 per round plus some betting money. It’s all night golf, rain or snow.
