Soccer Fever
Once again, the world cup fever is sweeping the globe.
Accordingly, we witness these strange, weird, and almost oxymoronic happenings, again!
An emotionless, strict, stiff math professor who never screams his whole life
cries out loud like a hungry wailing baby, when his team loses the game.
A quiet and super shy student who never raise his voice in any other circumstances
squawks like a sea lion, when the ball misses off the goal post.
A broadcasting anchor screams ‘goooooooooooooooooooooooo………al’
more than 20 seconds long until he chocks up.
As a lover of psychology and religion, literature and philosophy,
I see these phenomena quite interesting.
Why do people show sudden interest than usual?
During the World Cup, social identity as a member of a country
suddenly becomes very visible and comparative.
Naturally, people are sucked into game to be with their country and its team.
Why do people cheer and yell during a match in a way they never normally would?
Deindividuation! Of course. Blending into a crowd and become anonymous.
So called military uniform effect happens as winning and losing is equivalent with life and death.
Why do we criticize our country’s team so much,
but feel annoyed if someone from other country does it?
This is intergroup sensitivity effect.
In other word, it is constructive versus derogatory between ingroup and outgroup.
Why do we enjoy it when a team that’s not meant to be very good wins a match?
This is the underdog effect. As a big strong boy loses a fight to seemingly a small weaker boy.
Schadenfreude in German.
People loved it when Germany went home early after defeat to South Korea in 2018.
When we see success in difficult circumstances,
it inspires us to believe that we too might succeed at something difficult.
Does the World Cup always cause conflict between different countries?
Actually, no. In fact, it can improve relations between countries.
Although there is potential for rivalry, the World Cup really can also bring people from nations
all over the world together through their love of football.
And the Beauty lies within the Rule of Drama.
Hey, it's just a game, nothing but a stupid kicking ball game!
Really?!
Then how come people go nuts watching those dumb games?
Didn’t you see lots of players pray?
Didn’t you see the games are utterly unpredictable?
Didn’t you see the game transforms from human drama to divine battle?
Life and death war game between nations become festivities among gods?
Well…
Let’s see in the concept of human psychic.
It’s all about Unconscious!
Collective Unconsciousness in Jungian concept!
Divine play through Human Religiousness
Life becomes a ritual of worship, then Ecstasy in return!
When your team make a goal, it offers tremendous tremor.
Tremor becomes sublime Joy!
Did you see the faces of Koreans after the second goal shooting against Portugal?!
Didn’t you see the immediate response of cheering crowd?!
It’s our long-lost religious experience of enlightenment.
Divine Worshipping Ceremony!
Then
When the whistle blow, the game is over, and we all go home…
The great Play becomes history and remains forever…
Veni, Vidi, Vixi! (I came, I saw, I experienced) as Victor Hugo said.
Ergo Sum! (Therefore, I exist!) as Decarte said.
Go, Go! Korea!
Veni, Vidi, Amavi!(I came, I saw, I loved)
Human Drama finally becomes Divine Comedy!
Here is Humanity’s great epic love story…
I saw, I was there, I experienced.
I have lived life to the fullest at that moment.
The moment becomes the Eternal.
It gets even better in Slow Motion
Its clip of accident repeats again and again.
P.S.
Korea just lost the game against Brazil.
Hey, we always have next time.
What we need is a better and smarter Korean Coach.
A Korean think-tank team who understands the true nature of the rule of the game.
Don’t you think?
As long as the Spirit of Nation enlivens, Koreans will dance one day at the top
For the winning comedy at last.
The Spirit seeks enlightenment
While the Soul seeks connection

Although we lost the game, to our sorries, we all know our players and staff have done their best.
Let's cheer them up with a big applause.
We'll never get frustrated!!
Of Course!
The True Fans always applaud when the players do their best!
Regarding the Fans seen at the Qatar Stadium were not citizens of Qatar but who those paid foreigners-
The group of roughly 1,500 fans Lebanese included Egyptians, Algerians and a few Syrians who were paid all
free flights, accommodations, match tickets and food, plus a small stipend
to bring some ultra- to Qatar’s World Cup games.
The fans arrived in mid-October to rehearse their choreographed actions and to practice their newly written chants.
Which make sense now, most of Qataris are not interest in soccer.
I have noticed the world classgap in skill..
My favorite player is Kylian Mbappé from French Team.
For his dribbling abilities, exceptional speed, and finishing.
Who is yours?
