Martignano International Residency for Artists
MIRA - Martignano International Residency for Artists (Posted: 2/4/10) -- MIRA supports international artists and promotes the cultural exchange between artistic disciplines and international experiences. We have created a pristine environment in Martignano (Lecce), Italy exclusively for artists and their work needs. Our institution offers 5 large furnished rooms (3 with private bathrooms) with work desks for the artists. The grounds are divided between 2 buildings, one having a large, shared work studio, and the other permitting work freely throughout the house or outside. We assist the artists as much as possible in order for them to concentrate solely on their creating. An open house once a month and gallery installations at the Palazzo Palmieri Museum every two months further promote the cultural exchange between the artists and the community. 700 - 900 Euro per month.

MIRA, supports international artists and promotes the cultural exchange between artistic disciplines and international experiences. At MIRA we have created a pristine environment exclusively for the interaction of the artists and their work needs. Our institution offers 5 large furnished rooms, 3 with private bathrooms, which serve as living spaces. They are all adapted with work desks for the artists to be able to create also in the comfort of their room. The grounds are divided between 2 buildings, one having the main shared work studio, and the other permitting the artists to work freely throughout the house in order to create wherever they feel more at ease. We assist the artists as much as possible in order for them to concentrate solely on their creating. Once a month we organize an open house in which we invite local artists and the surrounding community in order to further promote the cultural exchange between the artists and their adopted home. Also, we are fortunate enough to be sponsored by the Comune of Martignano who have kindly donated the gallery installations at the Palazzo Palmieri, every two months, in order for our artists to have an exhibition. Artists, critics, press and the community at large are invited to attend. If funds permit, a brochure is printed to document the exhibition.
Studios are available from one to six month periods. We have found that one month is barely enough to arrive and adapt, let alone create and exhibit. For stays of longer than three months, the options for those non European Community Citizens are to either leave the Schengen Zone and return, or applying for an extension on the tourist visa. We can assist you either way. Please check ahead with your local embassy and we will check on or side.
There is a monthly fee charge of between 700 and 900 Euro depending on the room chosen. This money goes solely to the maintenance and continuous improvement of what we can offer to our attending artists. MIRA does neither cover living / material nor travelling expenses, although we will be
WHAT WE PROVIDE:
Studios – MIRA is divided into two buildings and we have designated interior and exterior areas of MIRA’s grounds permitting artists to work where they feel most comfortable. There is one large, interior studio to be shared by all artists.
Furnished rooms – our artist accomadations are elegantly furnished taking into account the necessities of our artists. Three rooms have private bathrooms while two share the bathroom. (Cleaning service twice a week.)
Kitchen and Dining – Commonly used kitchen and dining area with all appliances.
Laundry service once a week.
Common areas for the artists to relax, sit and talk, eat.
Bicycles for each of our artists to comfortably get around town.
Wireless internet throughout both buildings.
Open Studios – for invited art critics / artists / art guided tours.
We aid in organizing, inviting guests, etc.
Workshops – It is not necessary but if any artists are interested in working with the local artisans or perhaps giving a weekly class to the young children of the area, we would be glad to organize these events. Some artists in the past have particularly enjoyed sharing their knowledge with the locals and at the same time learning from them.
Tours – We know that we are in an extremely popular area of Italy and that many of the artists that come to us are interested in discovering the area. We can help you with any travel arrangements you may need throughout Italy.

JURY:
A jury of local and international experts in their fields decide on the acceptance of the applicants. Only submissions with completed applications will be considered. The jury meets once a month. Admission consideration is continuous.
IMPORTANT:
The applicant will be notified within four weeks of their sent application. Upon acceptance, the artist is required to deposit 50% of their total stay in order to hold their spot in the residency. MIRA will be more than happy to assist any applicant with recommendation / invitation letters to help them in seeking financial support.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
English should be spoken reasonably well. Italian is a definite plus but not obligatory. As always when travelling abroad, we highly recommend artists participating in MIRA to purchase some form of health/emergency insurance. One never knows what could happen and MIRA is not responsible, nor liable for any harm resulting from accidents/illness/legal issues that may occur to an artist during their residency. That obviously doesn’t mean that we won’t be here to help you if something unexpected were to occur.
UPON ARRIVAL:
Upon arrival you will be greeted either at the International Airport of Brindisi or at the Lecce train station and our driver will bring you to MIRA. Once here, we will show you the installations, introduce you to the fellow artists and answer any other questions you may have. We usually have a traditional welcome dinner for our new arrivals in order to break the ice, even though we’ve found that most artists have no trouble doing that on their own.
Martignano is a beautiful, typically small town and comune of 1,770 inhabitants in the province of Lecce in Apulia, Italy. It is part of Salento and is one of the nine towns of Grecìa Salentina, an area where Griko, an ancient Greek dialect is still spoken.
Puglia, or Apulia as it is called in English, is Italy's boot heel, its southeastern most region. Gateway to and from the East, it has been conquered by legions of foreign rulers. One famous ruler was Frederick II (1194-1250), the last Emperor of the Hohenstaufen line. An enlightened man, he built many castles which still grace the region, along with acres and acres of vineyards and olive groves. Apulia produces one-tenth of the wine drunk in Europe; its olive oil is renowned. Traditionally both of these commodities were mainly used to dilute their finer counterparts up north, but lately the local food artisans have begun creating some first-rate oils and vintages that are available throughout the region. They perfectly complement the super-fresh seafood and vegetables that are the staples of la tavola pugliese.
If you have already toured the northern part of Italy and are looking for something equally fascinating, completely different and much less crowded, this is a wonderful area to consider. It offers at least one excellent archeological museum, a host of cathedrals dating back to the 10th century, several deserted - and thus highly atmospheric - Greek and Roman ruins, a gleaming necklace of lively fishing villages, one of Europe's largest forests, a chain of medieval hilltowns, and some of the very cleanest beaches and water in the Mediterranean. It also has its own subspecies of architecture, called barocco leccese. Characterized by extremely ornate carvings that cover the entire surface of churches and palazzi, its apex is reached in the delightful little city of Lecce.
There is one other attraction that you will see only in Apulia, and that is 'i trulli.' Whitewashed cones made of stones held together without mortar, they are visible in almost every wheat field and olive grove, where they serve as miniature barns. But they are at their most picturesque when clustered together in the hundreds, to form a town. This is Alberobello, and it's a wonderful site you will never forget.
Another attractive part of being in this area of Italy is that MIRA can offer residencies year round as the winters aren't harsh creating a naturally nostalgic, romantic atmosphere in which to create, and the summers, although warm, welcome the discovery of the local beaches, some of the best in Europe.
No need to mention the many festivities held throughout the year, in particular the 'Tarantata' celebrations and its now famous concert, but also the San Pantaleo celebration, the patron saint of Martigna
