News Digest #1 - 대선 후보 3인, 각자의 공약 내세우며 대선 행보 이어가
Korea's three main presidential hopefuls have been busy on the campaign trail over the last week in the lead-up to December's election.
The ruling Saenuri Party's candidate Park Geun-hye said at a convention on Tuesday that leadership needs to seek unity across the board in order to ensure sustainable growth. She also said that helping individuals reach their goals now takes precedence over national growth, and promised to root out inequalities in society that have sapped national unity.
The main opposition Democratic United Party's candidate Moon Jae-in attended the first in-house committee to create new jobs and change the labor market. Moon reiterated that he wants to channel his energy into job creation, and said that along with creating jobs, the committee is setting out to turn "bad" jobs into "good" ones.
Independent contender Ahn Cheol-soo, meanwhile, said that the nation's challenges could be overcome if the people pool their resources. He called for giving incentives to companies who fulfill their social obligations and take steps to improve the environment, labor relations, and ownership structures.
Despite their disagreements, common themes in all three candidates' platforms appear to be ensuring an economically level playing field and chaebol reform.

건강 상태 호전
On Tuesday, the British hospital treating 14-year-old Malala Yousufzai, a teenage Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban for promoting girls' education, has responded well to treatment and impressed doctors with her strength. Experts say things are looking up for Malala's chances of recovery. Dr. Jonathan Fellus, chief scientific officer at the New Jersey-based International Brain Research Foundation, said, "It helps to be young and resilient to weather that storm. Because her brain is continuing to develop at that age, she may have more flexibility in the brain."
Malala was attacked along with two of her classmates when they were returning home from school in Pakistan last week. She arrived Monday in Britain, where she can be protected around the clock from follow-up attacks threatened by the militants, who have threatened to target Malala again because she promotes "Western thinking." The decision to send her abroad was made with her family's permission, and the Pakistani government will foot the bill for her treatment.
Malala's plight has galvanized people in Pakistan and around the world into decrying the Taliban, with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari saying had become "a symbol of all that is good in us."

Izhar Gafni is an award-winning inventor with an immense amount of curiosity. Ever since he's heard about someone who'd built a cardboard canoe, the amateur cycling enthusiast toyed with an idea of making a bicycle using the same material.
After years of trial and error, his latest prototype named Alfa has now proven itself and mass production will begin in the coming months. It took the inventor roughly four years to cancel out the corrugated cardboard's weak structural points.
The cardboard is treated with a secret concoction made of organic materials to give it its waterproof and fireproof qualities. In the final stage, it is coated with lacquer paint for aesthetic purposes.
Alfa is eco-friendly and sustainable, made entirely of 100% recycled materials. But, its most alluring quality is its cost-efficiency. It will be manufactured at about $9 to $12 per unit (and just $5 for a kids version). More importantly, maintenances fee is expected to be very low.
