Have you ever experienced
culture shock?
For instance ,
when we offer someone some
food, we usually say "help
yourself "
I think for most Korean, that
means "have as much as you want "
If someone who is living in western country currently said to you "help yourself ",
can you consider that means
" help yourself to anything you
like"
What do you think of things
like that?
첫댓글 시호님. Thank you Good posting..
My experiences the culture shock during the business trip exist in all the regions of the world,
especially in Arab countries, where the culture of religious law is..
Cultural differences of Arab countries are perfectly understandable,
although I've never been to any arab country.
For your reply, I am very thankful.
Umm.. that's an interesting subject. The original meaning of the word must have something to do with the situation back then. I'm also curious about the origin of the word.
Good day 시호님~^^
Thanks for the reply.
I think, we all Korean is so generous about food. Food sharing culture is unique tradition that only we have.
Have a great weekend.
The examples below should clarify what it means.
1. 그렇게 하세요 (좋을 대로 하세요)
A: Do you mind if I use the phone? 전화 써도 되요?
B: Go ahead, Help yourself. 그렇게 하세요.
A: Do you mind if I take a brochure? 브로셔 하나 가져가도 되요?
B: Not at all. Please help yourself. 개의치 않으니, 그렇게 하세요.
2. 마음대로 드세요, 마음껏 드세요
A: Can I have one of these doughnuts? 이 도너츠 하나 먹어도 돼요?
B: Help yourself. 그렇게 해.
A: Can I have some crackers? 크래커 좀 먹어도 돼요?
B: Help yourself. 마음껏 먹으렴.
Please help yourself to some coffee. 커피 좀 드세요.
Help yourself to this Bulgogi. 이 불고기 마음껏 드세요.
Why don't you help yourself to some more? 좀 더 드시는게 어때요?
Thanks for your good examples.
I am looking forward to your frequent visit.
위 예문에 보듯이,
눈치나 허락을 받지 말고 해도/먹어도 된다는 의미가 있습니다.
