Finland's Martti Ahtisaari wins Nobel Peace Prize
Martti Ahtisaari, the former Finnish president and United Nations envoy, has been awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. Ahtisarri has spent 30 years helping end conflicts in trouble spots ranging from Kosovo to Namibia and Indonesia. He 1)cut his diplomatic teeth in Africa at the age of 36 where he was appointed Finland’s ambassador to Tanzania. His selection by the Norwegian Nobel Committee should help 2)bolster the fragile peace that still exists in places like Kosovo and Aceh. Ahtisaari, who has been among the 3)frontrunners for the prize for years, said he had not been expecting to win the 2008 award. The 71-year-old admitted that the decades of work have 4)taken a toll and that it might be time to start spending more time at home.

US Removes North Korea from Terrorism Blacklist
The United States has removed North Korea from its list of states that sponsor terrorism. North Korea was added to the list in 1988 after its agents bombed a South Korean passenger jet, killing all 115 on board. Angry at the US’s apparent 1)reneging on a promise to remove it from the blacklist, the North had 2)put a halt to the disablement of its nuclear plants. Washington seemed to 3)strike a compromise by negotiating a new, yet-to-be-announced verification process. Many believe that this development will help get the six-party talks 4)back on track. One analyst has gone so far as to say that the delisting “5)opens the door for US business dealings” with Pyongyang but US officials said the Commerce Department will still 6)keep a close eye on all exports to North Korea.
