(English Translation):
This is a rare photograph showing 이수정(Yi Su-jeong, 李樹廷) which was taken on May of 1883(Gojong 20) during the 제3회 전국기독교도 대친목회 (3rd National Christian Fellowship) in Tokyo, Japan. Yi is known as a historical figure who contributed greatly to some of the first translations of the Joseon(Korean) bible. He converted to Christianity during his stay in Japan during the early 1880s.
His family is currently unknown but it is presumed that he was born into either the 전주 이씨 Family(Jeonju Yi Clan, 全州李氏) or the 평창 이씨 Family(Pyeongchang Yi Clan, 平昌李氏). Yi supported the Enlightenment Policy and was trusted by both King Gojong and Queen Min. In particular, Yi Su-jeong protected Queen Min during the events of 임오군란(壬午軍亂).
In late 1882, Yi was one of the members of the Joseon 수신사(修信使) to Japan which allowed opportunity for academic research. During his travels, he met Dr. Tsuda Sen(쓰다 센/律田仙) who was an advocate for Christianity in Japan. Dr. Tsuda presented important words to Yi Su-jeong as he stated, “The light of Confucius is partial and could not shine to the dark places. However, the light of Jesus is like the sun and shines on every nook and cranny in Japan, the whole world, and the earth from this end to that”. After reading the 한문 성서(Chinese Bible), Yi devoted to the Christian faith and was baptized in Japan on April 29th, 1883. He was the first Joseon Christian to be baptized in Japan.
He is most notably known for the completion of 현토한한신약성서(懸吐漢韓新約聖書) in which edits and add-ons including 이두(Idu, 吏讀) were applied. Here, the Chinese texts of the Chinese bible were edited so that the Joseon people who were familiar with the Chinese characters could read it more easily. This was published in 1884 and contained the newly edited version of the Four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles from the Chinese bible. Furthermore, Yi Su-Jeong was responsible for the creation of the official Joseon translated version of the Gospel of Mark in the New Testament (Named, ‘신약 마가전 복음서 언해/신약 마가젼복음셔언해’(新約 마가傳 福音書 諺解) ~ published in February, 1885). Yi’s popularity grew throughout both America and Japan during this time as it was clear through his letters and articles which emphasized his determination to spread the Christian faith and evangelize the Joseon people.
It was also because of Yi Su-jeong that American missionaries were sent to Joseon in 1884-1885, therefore contributing greatly to the spread of Christianity within the country.
Yi was close with members of the 온건개화파(穩健開化派 - Moderate Enlightenment Faction) and the 급진개화파(急進開化派 - Radical Enlightenment Faction). Some of the officials that he was close with was 민영익(Min Yeong-ik, 閔泳翊 - 여흥 민씨/Yeoheung Min Clan, 驪興閔氏), 홍영식(Hong Yeong-sik, 洪英植 - 남양 홍씨/Namyang Hong Clan, 南陽洪氏), 서재필(Seo Jae-pil, 徐載弼 - 대구 서씨/Daegu Seo Clan, 大丘徐氏), and 서광범(Seo Gwang-beom, 徐光範 - 대구 서씨/Daegu Seo Clan, 大丘徐氏). But due to the aftermath of the 갑신정변(Gapsin Coup, 甲申政變) that took place in 1884, Yi Su-jeong was summoned to return back to Joseon. He returned to his homeland on May 28th, 1886.
By the time of his return, Christianity was prohibited under Joseon law. Yi Su-jeong was executed by the conservative faction or Sugupa(수구파, 守舊派) in 1886.
In the photograph, Yi Su-jeong is seen sitting in the front row (fifth person from left to right). Photographer is unidentified.
A monument commemorating Yi was also erected on June 20th, 2006 (Location: 총신대학교(Chongsin University)).
