1. N.K. finance chief executed over failed reform
??
Everyone makes mistakes and life goes on. In North Korea, however, a mistake can end up with you paying the ultimate price. The ruling Workers’ Party’s finance and planning department chief, Pak Nam-gi, who is thought to be behind the nation’s botched currency reform has not been seen in months. Under a plan to lower inflation and limit free market activity, the North redenominated its currency. The reform efforts ended up backfiring rendering people’s cash supplies nearly worthless and putting Pak in hot water. Citing sources in the North, Yonhap News says that Pak was executed by firing squad last week for his economic blunder which sent food prices skyrocketing in the impoverished nation. Yonhap’s sources say that Pak was merely a scapegoat for the plan and that, “He was executed on the trumped-up charges of being an anti-revolutionary element as public sentiments worsened over the failure of the currency reform.” The South’s National Intelligence Service has yet to confirm his execution.

2. In Myanmar, change follows junta’s pace
In a country ruled by a ruthless military junta for most of the past 50 years, signs of change are slowly creeping into the awareness of Myanmar’s citizens. Still referred to by many as Burma, the country’s 55 million poverty stricken residents have seen many false dawns before. This time though, it seems that the country may be taking baby steps towards actual change. Signs that times are changing include: the issuance of permits for private schools and hospitals, leniency towards owning cars and motorbikes, the sale of state-run companies to the private sector, efforts to revive troubled rice exports and even new elections. Referring to the new developments, Thant Myint-U, a historian on Myanmar and former U.N. official said, “Burma is at a critical watershed. We’re clearly moving towards something other than a strict army hierarchy with just one general at the top.” Critics do remind people, however, that after half a century of running the economy into the ground, any positive steps should be taken with a grain of salt.
