[000] And now, the rest of the Rest of the Story.
[001] Yesterday, you and I met Gustav Brachhausen, the tycoon
who ended up working in a factory that he himself had
founded, the millionaire big shot whose career concluded
drawing the meager salary of a night watchman.
[002] Today, we'll fill out the blanks in his biography.
[003] Back in his native Germany Brachhausen was an engineer,
but he abandoned a high-paying position in Leipzig for
the opportunity of "striking and rich" in America.
[004] He was 35 when he arrived autumn of 1892.
[005] Before the year was out, he established the Regina Music
Box Company.
[006] Little more than a year later, the company was formally
incorporated, business grew quickly.
[007] Many seasons of phenomenal success were followed by those
of repeated setbacks.
[008] But Gustav got out while the getting was good.
[009] In 1915, he sold his shares of the company for a million
dollars with the intention of retiring in luxury.
[010] But somehow, he managed thereafter to lose everything,
and there was a divorce that didn't help matters.
[011] And finally, flat broken, needing a job, he returned to
Regina, seeking employment, first as a tool and die
maker, finally as a night watchman, in the company that
he had owned!
[012] But this is the rest of the rest of the story.
[013] At the turn of the century, Gustav Brachhausen was at the
zenith of his career.
[014] Generally agreed throughout the industry that his product
was superior mechanically and acoustically.
[015] 175 workers were employed at his New Jersey plant.
[016] The nationwide demand for Regina music boxes kept them
all busy.
[017] Then, one day, during this 'things could not be better'
time, a stranger visited Mr. Brachhausen's office.
[018] The man was Elgridge Johnson.
[019] He had come from hometown Camden to applaud Mr.
Brachhausen's success, but also to insist that no product
was beyond improvement.
[020] Gustav was caught off guard by the impertinent suggestion
and he was a little annoyed.
[021] Regina music boxes were the most sonorous, the most
technically sophisticated, and everybody knew that.
[022] So what could this Mr. Johnson possibly had to offer?
[023] Well, predictably, the visitor had brought with him a
gadget to illustrate his point.
[024] But when the demonstration was over, Mr. Brachhausen
remained vigorously unconvinced.
[025] The idea was unworkable and preposterous, he said, and he
ushered Mr. Johnson out of his office.
[026] Of course, you know the rest of the story that many years
would pass before Mr. Brachhausen wound up as a night
watchman in the factory which he had founded.
[027] And yet, considering how certain critical choices may
affect an industry forever after, might Mr. Brachhausen's
decline have begun on the day Mr. Johnson left town.
[028] Had they cooperated at the turn of the century, surely,
the name Regina would now be synonymous with something
else.
[029] But Elgrige Johnson was invited to go his own way, which
he did, and the corporation he later co-founded was
called, ho, ho, the Victor Talking Machine Company.
[030] The Victor Talking Machine Company!
[031] You know the invention with which he tried and failed to
impress Gustav Brachhausen.
[032] You know it as the wax disc phonograph.
[033] Only now you know the rest of the story.

[000] 그리고 지금, the Rest of the Story입니다.
[012] 그러나 이것은 나머지의 the rest of the story입니다.
것을 당신은 the rest of the story를 알고 걔십니다.
[033] 이제야 당신은 the rest of the story를 알고 계십니다.
