(Once a Blue, always a Blue)'이라는 문구로부터 만들어진 구호다.

록밴드 ‘조이 디비전’의 ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’를 ‘Giggs Will Tear You Apart’로 개사한 긱스의 응원가는 가장 쿨한 노래라는 생각이 든다.
![]() 루니 응원가 ‘He said to me he'd seen The White Pele; So I asked; Who is he?; He goes by the name of Wayne Rooney’ ⓒGettyImages/멀티비츠/나비뉴스 |

Some players have them and others don't. It is not usually a direct reflection of ability or even popularity with the masses, but rather if somebody has hit on to a catchy tune that everybody else can easily pick up.
It is even possible to identify when a chant was born and later tweaked. We are talking about songs reserved for individual players and, specifically, Manchester United.
The Red Devils fans, often criticised for their lack of passion at home games, in fact have one of the most extensive song-lists in the game.
Many are unprintable and nonsensical but I will endeavour to list those relating to the players here - with apologies for obviously having to censor some of the foul language.
Let me start by mentioning South Korea's finest, Park Ji-sung, whose chant is bellowed out even when he is not playing. As previously stated here, the song is not meant to be offensive to his homeland, even though it certainly is, but is more of an attack on United's fiercest rivals - Liverpool.
'Park, Park, wherever you may be; You eat dogs in your home country; It could be worse; You could be Scouse; Eatingrats in your council house'.
The former PSV Eindhoven midfielder is popular due to his exceptional work ethic but it could be argued that his song is one of those most heard at Old Trafford, certainly ahead of the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.
The same goes for John O'Shea - not a regular starter and far from the best player at the club but his name is sung with gusto on a regular basis.
'When Johnny goes marching down the wing, O'Shea, O'Shea; When Johnny goes marching down the wing O'Shea, O'Shea;
When Johnny goes marching down the wing, the Stretford End is going to sign; We all know Johnny is going to score'.
Slightly confusing as O'Shea hardly ‘marches down the wing’ and is far from a regular scorer, although he has tended to save the goals for big occasions - Anfield last season springs immediately to mind.
But this stemmed from when the Irishman first burst into the side at left back and had a storming match at Newcastle, hitting the bar with a tremendous effort and impressing everybody with his willingness to get forward.
There are songs reserved for the best two players at the club, naturally. Cristiano Ronaldo's first tribute, right from his debut against Bolton was the initially tongue-in-cheek: 'There's only one Ronaldo'.
Five years on and this is ringing true as the Portuguese winger is probably the best player in the world while the Brazilian of the same name struggles to save his career.
Soon came: 'He plays on the left; He plays on the right; That boy Ronaldo makes Beckham look sh*te.'
This was a terrible way to repay Beckham for his efforts in the red shirt although, again, it was meant to be cheeky rather than a direct criticism of the former international captain.
Nevertheless, it was modified after Ronaldo sent England crashing out of another tournament with the last line now reading: 'That boy Ronaldo makes England look sh*te.' The fact that it is accompanied by hand movements, swaying left and right, makes it one of the more impressive of the terrace songs in The Premier League.
Rooney's ditty comes from the England fans originally: 'I saw my mate the other day; He said to me he'd seen The White Pele; So I asked; Who is he?; He goes by the name of Wayne Rooney; Wayne Rooney, Wayne Rooney, he goes by the name of Wayne Rooney'.
Another chant for the Merseyside marauder is: 'Once a blue, always a Red' a reference to his 'Once a Blue, always a Blue' T-shirt he revealed when scoring for his beloved Everton in the FA Youth Cup final.
With the advent of today's supporter, songs seem to be losing their originality and many chant is very much outdated, yet still belted out with passion. Perhaps that is why the Park tune is given an airing at every opportunity. It is fresh and novel.
So, for the record, Edwin van der Sar, Nani, Owen Hargreaves, Patrice Evra and Michael Carrick do not have specific songs.
There are other first-teamers with bland offerings - 'Rio, Rio' for Rio Ferdinand, 'An-der-son, An-der-son' for the young Brazilian, 'Argentina, Argentina' for Carlos Tevez, the same chant that greeted Gabriel Heinze before his spectacular fall from grace with the fans and the club.
Tevez actually has a far better tune but it is only heard on away days: 'Who's that boy from Argentina?;
Who's that boy we all adore?; Plays with Rooney plays with Wes; He's our superstar Tevez; And forever at United, he will score'.
The old warhorses each have their songs. 'Gary Neville is a red, is a red, is a red; Gary Neville is a red;
He hates Scousers' is a reference to him putting into print his hatred for all things Merseyside.
'He scores goals galore; He scores goals; He scores goals galore; He scores goals; Paul Scholes; He scores goals' is again more of a reference to his early days but is still his theme tune.
And Giggs has probably the coolest song: 'Giggs will tear you apart', a reworking of the Joy Division classic, as well as the jaunty: 'Ryan Giggs, Ryan Giggs flying down the wing; Ryan Giggs, Ryan Giggs flying down the wing; Feared by the Blues, loved by the Reds; Ryan Giggs, Ryan Giggs, Ryan Giggs' to the old Robin Hood song.
Nemanja Vidic is popular for his uncompromsing style and his name is sung far more frequently than that of his defensive partner Ferdinand. 'Nemanja, whoooah; Nemanja, whoooah; He comes from Serbia;
He'll f**king murder ya' greets every crunching tackle from the centre back.
The ironic 'Darren Fletcher's a football genius' accompanied his starring role against Arsenal in the FA Cup and Wes Brown enjoys: 'We've got Wesley Brown; We've got Wesley Brown; We've got Wesley;
We've got Wesley; We've got Wesley Brown' to the tune of 'Knees Up Mother Brown'.
As is always the case, some of the old songs are the best. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's chant is still aired regularly and refers to the signing of the Norwegian in 1996 when Alan Shearer snubbed a move to United.
'You are my Solskjaer; My Ole Solksjaer; You make me happy, when skies are grey; And Alan Shearer was f**king dearer; Oh please don't take my Solskjaer away.'
Jaap Stam was a crowd favourite and had this offering: 'Yip Jaap Stam is a big Dutch man; Get past him if you f**king can; Try a little flick and he'll make you look a d*ck; Yip Jaap, Jaap Stam'.
Eric Cantona had, and still has, a number of songs - one of them the classic that heralded Denis Law's stay at Old Trafford, to the tune of Lily the Pink: 'We'll drink a drink a drink; To Eric the king, the king, the king; He's the leader of our football team; He's the greatest centre forward; That the world has ever seen'.
Sometimes even songs for opposing fans have been modified to give them a United slant. For instance, Patrick Vieira ('he comes from Senegal, he plays for Arsenal') was reworked after his misplaced pass allowed Giggs to score his incredible solo goal in the 1999 FA Cup semi-final.
'Vieira, whoaah; Vieira, whoaah; He gave Giggsy the ball; And Arsenal won f**k all'.
The list is probably endless - and the ever-increasing number of new songs should ensure more, fresh chants are added as the years go by. The only trouble is that the days of a whole crowd singing in unison seem to be over.
Unless a chant has incredibly simple lyrics, the fact that many people attend games irregularly makes it difficult for them to pick it up - hence the situation with Tevez. Much easier to bellow 'Argentina' even though it was a tribute to a player who, in the fans' eyes, betrayed the club.
So listen out for the supporters' repertoire the next time United are in action and see if you can
pick out the tunes.
