Communication skill is the most important ability for politicians and business leaders. Do you agree or disagree with the statement?
Over the past few decades, it has been argued whether or not communication skill is the most important quality for leaders like presidents or business leaders who are in charge of certain departments. Some might say communication skill is, indeed, the most required stuff for them because they think conveying one’s thoughts to others takes significant part in the formal engagements. On the other hand, others might not agree with them for some reasons. My point of view is, however, that whether or not communication skill takes the majority part of the whole value of those kinds of leaders totally depends on what situation they are in at the moment. I have a couple of reasons which support my opinion and will demonstrate them in the next following paragraphs below.
First, in the case of these kinds of engagements like formal speeches to the public or meetings with significant clients in a certain industry, communication skill must be the fundamentally-acquired ability for head leaders who are in charge of certain company or country. This is because, in that case, encouraging the person whom they are talking to to recognize what they have been thinking and conceived is important. If they can’t persuade them to follow their idea or act as they intended one hundred percent, they should leave off their occupation, for the task for those leaders is to leave no stones unturned to make it possible to be done what their occupation, company, department, or country are most likely to be needed. So, for those leaders who can’t manage to accomplish, which means they are lack of communication skill, at least one single task which is needed to be done, I would refer them as the persons who do not afford their position. Some would go against me ,maybe, because of their thought that just meaningly worthy words mean nothing if they are not actually executed, and therefore the ability to carry out a series of works in row is rather important for those leaders than communication skill. Actually their thought is half-correct. The reason why I said 'half-correct' is that I also agree with their suggestion. But, as I mentioned above, I think we should divide the application of this topic between a couple of situations. One is formal, which means exterior event or appearance, and the other is informal, which means interior acts or execution of tasks. Let’s take this to the further complexed demonstration in the following paragraph.
So, secondly, to make my point of view clearer, let me give you an example of it. You want to think about a certain company and the chairman who is running it out effectively and accurately. Samsung, which has the most massive scale of industries in South Korea, is the best example indeed, I think. Observing how the company has become that vast one, it is not hard to realize that the first chairman of Samsung, Lee Byung Chul, actually had used both of types of skills for the company’s growth, communication skill and execution skill. Back then, in 1970s, the most important task for the company was communication skill. This was because the country, South Korea, had no power in the globalized world so that their act was limited by the interest among countries in the vicinity of it in a political or geological sense, such as China, Japan, and United States of America. To make a way that the company would develop, the leader was needed to read the ever-changing tide of the world and act wisely in it. So he went abroad. He went to Japan so as to get permission of adaptation of semiconductor technology which Japan took the majority of parts of the industry at the time. And surprisingly, he actually made it! After he came back to his homeland, he started to apply the technology to his company. In this point, execution skill would play a major role in the company. He ordered for his employees to make those semiconductors by the company own. He rapidly, somewhat aggressively, executed operations related with semiconductor on the company so that Samsung today has become one of the biggest companies in the world. To ask Lee Byung Chul that which ability was the most important thing between communication skill and execution skill, he would answer that both of them were all needed for him. For communicating is not everything, and executing is not everything either. This is my point of view, and I explained them in details. For these reasons, I think both of the qualities are necessary for leaders in a certain occupation.
