Teacher’s Essay
What do we live for?
Tony Choi
Years ago, something happened and my life had come to a standstill. As an English teacher, I was teaching my students English in high school. All of a sudden, my life had turned unhappy. I could not lead a happy life. I could not get to sleep at home. I struggled for a couple months to get out of this situation where I was constantly struggling, but to no avail.
I sat at a computer and kept typing in a Google search window day in and day out hoping to come up with a solution to my predicament. I walked mindlessly in the Bongwha mountain for hours. I did not feel like myself. I felt like I was a robot stuck inside my human body.
Amid the struggle, I came across a news article regarding a book titled “Your Best Life” by Joel Osteen, a Christian pastor. As I am a religious man, the title caught my attention. I suddenly realized that my life had come to a standstill because I had lost direction in my life. I was disoriented. A question then came into my mind, ‘What do I live for?’
I desperately began to search for the purpose of my life. Was it to change the world? Was it to become a Nobel laureate? Neither of them convinced me. How about helping people around me, either in a big or small way? How about knowing that this world would be better with me being part of it? How about realizing that my existence would make a positive difference in the world, even tiny as it might be? I finally found the purpose of my life. From that moment on, my life moved on. I was able to resume doing my work and I was able to get to sleep at home.
Several years later, while reading a book authored by the late professor Shin Young-bok, a sentence struck me hard. “There is no creature that does not learn. Even snails do.
Last summer, snails must have learned the world and themselves in order to endure harsh rainstorms. Learning is the reason why creatures live. Learning in this sentence did not just mean academic learning. Whatever job one has, one can learn from it. If we acquire something today that we did not know yesterday, that can be counted as learning. As such, I added the word learning to my purpose of life.
Every morning I look at myself in the mirror and ask myself, ‘how can I be of help to the people around me today and what did I learn yesterday?’
As an English teacher, I try to help my students improve their English. As a man, when my family members, relatives, and friends reach out to me for help, I do my best to aid them. As a writer, I continue to do my best to come up with more essays. One of the most important things is to announce my faith to others.
