If you are a grassflower
in a nameless vale,
be the prettiest one there.
If you are a little bird
in a distant forest,
sing in the prettiest voice there.
If you are a pebble in a sandy beach
be the shiniest one there.
Flower most prettily,
sing in the prettiest voice
and be the shiniest person
where you were born and raised
for the sake of your loved ones
and those who have contributed to your life.
As time marches on,
I miss past things more.
As days to live decrease,
I feel wistful more.
And yet, it sounds true
that, as we get old, we are happier.
Somehow the world looks prettier than before;
Flowers look prettier than before;
Bird's song sounds prettier than before;
Grandkids' playful antics get cuter and cuter.
As obsession about things diminishes,
I realize resignation is a virtue, too.
Driving out depressing thoughts
to maintain peace of mind,
I find my body and mind
right in the middle of paradise
where flowers bloom and bird sings.
When you find yourself thinking
your body humble compared with others',
don't forget that it is the only bowl
that contains your beautiful soul.
When I crawled on four limbs,
I couldn't tell sky from earth.
Even when I walked on two feet
I knew nothing much of the world.
Born and raised in poverty,
I fostered a rosy dream,
making my will strong like steel.
Each of twelve bends of painful thorny path
wet in my sweat gave me unassignable grief,
which nurtured me to have the strength
to tide over crisis of life.
I realized just a bit of my original dream
but I am content with what I am today,
for accumulated hours of my agony
have turned into a blessing.
I feel sad about my gray hair; however,
I'm still young at heart, my will still strong.
Today as usual I go to work with a glad heart
to lay one brick, thinking of my loved ones,
giving thanks to God for His blessing.
And yet, I wish to live until justice is actualized,
to surely see the current privileged class repent,
who are now above law, denying justice.
Munhwi, my brainy first cousin,
who became a town clerk at the age of 20,
made up his mind not do farming work all his life.
He did so seeing his father die
of farming overwork at the age of 42.
Being a town clerk, he thought
he'd be able to survive just by doing deskjob.
Father of a son and a daughter,
he got by on his meager land and clerk salary.
One day during his business trip to Yosu,
he met a whore, had a crush on her, quit his job,
moved in with her and sold off all his farmland
aganst his widowed mother's vehement objection.
He learnt all evil things from her,
developed tuberculosis
and finally got addicted to morphine.
For 2 years when I was 9 and 10 years old,
he stayed with us 3 or 4 days at a time,
whenever he had a quarrel with her.
Since I didn't know what morphine was,
I would shamlessly run errands for him
buying morphine from Jongpo pharmacy.
On a cold winter night, he was kicked out
by her into the street after a quarrel;
He came to my house at dawn,
for he could not go back to his family.
Munhwi, a terminal tuberculosis patient,
spent the winter night shivering in the cold,
got worse overnight and closed his eyes
at my house on the following morning.
Before going to school in the morning,
I opened our main room door
to find him lying long
under the old blanket Mom provided.
Mom said he was 29.
When young,
I once thought you my liability.
After that, I thought you my asset,
then my liability and then my asset.
You said all along I was your asset
and one day said I was your liability,
then your aset and then your liability.
Thus we lived for a long time
sometimes recognizing each other as asset
and sometimes as liability
Then one day I realized,
while making a balance sheet of my business:
That asset is the sum of net asset and liability
and liability exists because of net asset,
and liability contributes to increasing asset;
That, for a business to grow, net asset and liability
need a proper balacne between them;
That, in the real world as in the balance sheet
either net asset or liability alone cannot exist;
That, if you insist on having just net asset,
neither your business nor your asset can grow;
That, liability consists of a good one and bad one;
That you need a good liability
as much as you need net asset;
Even after such belated epiphany,
I spent years of deep sigh reapeating the same epiphany
until I came to know for sure, that, though you cannot
always be my net asset, you're my good liability I need
and that my existence means the same to you.
Whatever you do should be praised
if it's what you really want,
because it is the worthiest thing.
Who wll care whether you scrawl on the wall,
or surf rough wave or run a desert marathon,
if it's what you really want.
For we have not so many days to live.
their number decreasing day by day,
seeminly too short to enjoy beauty
and inhale scent of the world
as much as we want.
I walked my way light-heartedly
believing it my passion.
Looking back on my way quietly,
I just feel my heart full of shame.
Wrnkles increased on my face,
footsteps getting heavy; however,
my lonely soul got solace meanwhile,
the pain and fiendishness of time
passing me by like a whiff of wind.
I don't fear loneliness to come,
regret nothing about my life until today
though I am walking in the sunset alone.
Though born again,
my destiny would guide me the same way;
Let me walk the same way tomorrow, too,
getting wet in the dew of dawn.

On seeing such absurd demonstration by a huge crowd demanding
