런던 Her Majesty's Theatre 에서 1986년 10월 09일에 초연되었고, 주연은 Michael Crawford 와 Sarah Brightman 이었다. 처음 미국에서 공연되던 해 예매표만 118억이 팔렸다. 음반은 석달만에 10만장이 팔렸다. 그 해 7개 부문에서 Tony상을 수상했고, Awards include the Laurence Olivier 1986, and Evening Standard Award for Best Musical.
오키스트라가 생음악으로, 그리고 신디사이져가 뒷받침해 준다. 엔드류는 처음에 이 작품을 오페라로 발표하려 했다가 아무래도 비평가와 팬들을 고려해 뮤지칼로 발표했다. 런던의 캐스트는 모두 성악에 기초하고 있지만 그들의 목소리는 매우 대중적이라 듣기에 편한 편이다. 정확한 발음을 구사하기 때문에 알아듣기엔 어려움이 없을 것이다.
줄거리를 소개하면,
파리의 오페라하우스 지하에는 얼굴의 반쪽이 괴물이어서 하얀 가면을 쓰고 사는 괴인이다. 그는 사람을 멀리한 체 살아가는 이상한 존재였지만 사실은 음악의 천재였다. 그런데 크리스틴이라는 젊은 여가수를 사랑하게 되어 그녀를 지하로 납치, 자신의 음악을 전수시키게 된다. 그러나 그녀는 사랑하는 약혼자가 있었다. 이름은 라울. 갈등이 생기고 종국에는 유령이 크리스틴을 다시 납치하고, 이를 따라 오던 라울의 목에 밧줄을 걸고 만다. 그리고 크리스틴에게 말한다.
"So, Do you end your days with me or do you send your lover to his grave ......
Don't try my patience .... Make your choice!!!!"..
그러나 결국에 유령은 이 둘을 보내고 만다. 너무도 사랑했기 때문에. 멀리 사라지는 두 연인을 보며 유령은 눈물을 흘리며 그녀의 이름을 읊조린다.

이 '오페라의 유령'의 백미는 바로 이 장면이다. 무대 저편으로는 수많은 촛불사이로 크리스틴과 라울이 배를 타고 멀어져 가고, 유령은 철창에 기댄 체 멀어져가는 그들을 바라보며 노래를 부른다. 극이 이쯤되면 울지 않는 이가 없다.
무대장치가 환상적이라 더욱 유명하다. 예를 들어 첫장면에는 아주 초라한 경매장의 모습이 나온다. 경매인이 샹들리에를 경매에 붙이던 중 경매인이 샹들리에의 불을 켜보도록 요청하는 순간에 조명이 다 꺼지고, 무대위의 샹들이에가 번쩍거리며 불이 켜진다. 그리고 관악기를 선두로 그 유명한 서곡이 연주되고, 샹들리에는 서서히 무대에서 하늘로 움직이기 시작한다. 1층 관객의 머리위로 둥실 들려서 관객들의 머리 저 위편으로까지 올라간다. 그 무게만 0.25톤에 UFO 모양의 이 샹들리에는 만드는데에만 6개월이 걸린 30만개의 유리구슬로 되어 있는 것이다. 실로 장관이다. 샹들리에가 끝까지 오르면 무대는 어느새 과거로 돌아가 있다.
그리고 1막이 끝나는 장면에서는 라울과 크리스틴의 사랑노래에 화가난 유령이 이 샹들리에를 떨어뜨리며 저주하는데, 마치 관객의 머리위로 떨어지는 듯한 긴박감을 주기도 한다.
<<에필로그>>
옆좌석에 8살쯤되는 한 꼬마 여자아이가 있었는데, 끝나고서도 어머니 품에서 계속 우는 모습이 너무너무 부럽게 느껴졌다. 저 어린 나이에 이런 뮤지칼을 보고 받은 감명이 그 아이의 장래에 큰 영향을 줄 수도 있고, 그런 기회를 가질 수 있고, 그런 환경에서 산다는 사실이.
기립박수를 치다가 옆의 영국신사에게,
"Isn't it brilliant?"
그러자 그는,
"Everytime I saw, IT IS brilliant!"
"와... How many times you see it?"
"Oh ...... Well.... I can't remember..."
한패의 우리나라 배낭족들을 마구 꼬셔 한 다섯팀 정도 같이 이 뮤지칼을 봤는데 물론 하루 1만원 이하를 쓰려고 작정한 사람들이니까 꼬시기 힘들었지만. 그런데 앞으로 하루 두끼씩만 먹기로 했다면서 며칠후의 표를 또 사는 모습을 볼 수 있었다.
오스트리아 빈은 유령역을 맡은 배우의 연기가 일품이다. 독어로 된 함부르크의 것은 유령을 맡은 연기자가 너무 무뚝뚝해서 런던이나 빈의 공연을 본 사람은 "뭐 이렇게 시시해!" 하는 말을 하게 된다.

CHRISTINE moves slowly towards it when suddenly the image thrusts its hands through the mirror towards her. She faints. The PHANTOM catches her and carries her to the bed, where he lays her down.)

servant, is directing the STAFF as they make the room ready. They are a crowd of sixteenth century ruffians and hoydens, proud of their master's reputation as a libertine)
