Police are widening their probe into an escalating scandal over the recent leak of the questions of the Scholastic Aptitude Test, a standardized test for college entrance in the United States.
Last Sunday, police sought an arrest warrant for a 36-year-old SAT instructor, identified only by his surname Chang, on charges of stealing SAT test sheets four times since last October.
Investigators are moving to expand their inquiry to find out if any others - working in private SAT cram schools, particularly in the affluent Gangnam area in southern Seoul - are engaged in such test leak schemes.
Although Chang claims that he sought to use the test information in teaching his students, police are not ruling out the possibility of him sending it to students, who were to take the same test in different time zones.
Chang and three others sat for the SAT - administered last Saturday at a middle school in Gyeonggi Province - and allegedly tore off different sections of the test with small cutters or keyed in test information on scientific calculators. The three, hired by Chang, were booked on the same charges without detention.
Police nabbed them after receiving reports from employees of the U.S.-based Educational Testing Service, which administers the SAT at test centers worldwide. ETS, which has been keeping track of Korean test-takers suspected of leaking test information, sent its two employees to Korea last Thursday.
