4. Gerund 기능
; 명사에 준하는 문법적 역할 수행, 주어와 목적어(동사,전치사의 목적어),보어 역할
Feeding the birds is forbidden here. (S)
feeding 이 동사의 성격을 보여서 birds에게 "먹이를 먹이는 것"
"THE" 생략되었다.
The lighting of torches at night is a beautiful ceremony in Hawaii.(주어)
The chief cause of overweight is eating to much at night.(보어)
My mother enjoys reading weekly magazines.(동사의 목적어)
He warned me against trusting her.(전치사의 목적어)
Gerund 완료형과 수동형
단순동명사 본동사의 지세와 동일한 시제 혹은 가까운 미래.
완료동명사( having +동사의 과거분사) 혹은 (having been+동사의 과거분사)
He is pround of being rich.
=>He is proud that he is rich
He was pround of being rich.
=>He was pround that he was rich.
She regreats having sptent the money. (완료동명사)
=>She regrets that she spent the money.
She regretted having spent the money.(완료동명사)
=>She regretted that she had spent the money.(대과거)
I hate being criticized behind my back.(동명사수동태)
She repents of having been educated in America.(완료수동태)
참고: The boy wants washing. (수동의 의미)
This garden needs weeding.
동명사와 부정사
1. 동명사만 목적어로 취하는 동사 (과거적 느낌, 결정된것)
내제안을 suggest ~ing 써제스티잉
고려해 consider ~ing 컨씨더 잉
미루지마 postpone ~ing 포스트폰잉
피하지마 avoid ~ing 어보이디잉
추천을 recommend ~ing 리코맨디잉
부인하지마 deny ~ing 디나잉
끝내버려 finish, quit, discontinue,give up ~ing
keep,enjoying keep~ing, Enjoy ~ing.
2. 부정사만을 목적어로 취하는 동사 (미래적 느낌)
agree to, choose to , decide to expect to, hope to promise to,
seek to,wish to (어드리투,추즈투,디사이투,익스펙투,홉투,푸롸미스투 ~~)
3. To 부정사와 동명사 동시에 쓰지만 뜻이 달라지는 동사
He tried to grow tomatoes there. ( ~하려고 애쓰다) 미래하려는것,
He tried growing tomatoes there. (시도했다, 과거에 한것.)
Remember to post the letter. (미래)
He remembered meeting the elegant lady at the festival.(과거)
Don't forget to mail the letter on your way to school.(미래)
I will never forget seeing her at the party. (과거)
I stopped to smoke. (~ 하려고)
I stopped smoking. (~하는 것을 그만두다)
동명사와 현재분사
수식하는 명사가 그 행위의 주체가 되는 것 현재분사
수식받는 명사의용도나 목적을 가리킬때 동명사
a sleeping car = a car for sleeping 동명사
a sleeping baby= a baby who is spleeping 현재분사
a walking stick 동명사
a walking dictionary 현재분사
a smoking room 동명사
a smoking man 현재분사
a dancing gir 동명사 춤추는 소녀, 현.분 춤추고 있는 소녀
a sailing ship 동명사 돛단배, 현.분 항해중인 배
* 수식받는 명사가 사람일 때 현재분사 사물일때 동명사
(예외도 있지만 대부분)
동명사의 의미상 주어
소유격 혹은 목적격이 동명사의 의미상 주어로 쓰인다.
문장의 주어와 같거나 일반인일 경우 생략한다.
Deceiing others is deceiving oneself. (주어 They 일반인 생략)
She is proud of being a scholar. (being 앞에 her 생략)
I can't understand his/him behaving like that.
Who told you of your husband's /your husband being there?
"당신 남편의 거기있음" 을 얘기 했나?
They insisted on Tom's/Tom going there.
동명사의 관용적 용법
There is no knowing what will happen. 무슨일이 일어날지 모른다.
= It is impossible to know what will happen.
It is no use trying to fight against God. 신에게 대항해 싸워도 소용없다.
=there is no use trying to fight against God.
=It is of no use to try to fight against God.
=It is useless to try to fight against God.
I cannot help laughing. 웃지 않을수 없다.
= I cannot but laugh.
=I cannot choose but laugh.
= I cannot help but laugh.
= I have no choice but to laugh
It goes without saying that health is above wealth.
건강이 돈보다 우위에 있음은 말할 필요도 없다.
= It is needless to say that health is above wealth.
She makes a point of taking a walk after dinner.
그녀는 저녁식사 후에 산책하는것을 규칙으로 삼다.
He was on the point of getting on the bus.
그가 막 버스에 오르려 하는 참이다.
This book is worth reading again and again.
이책은 계속해서 읽을 가치가 있다.
The little girl felt like crying then.
그소녀는 울고 싶은 기분이 들었다그때
What do you say to going on a picnic?
소풍가는건 어때?
On arriving there, she sent me an e-mail.
거기 도착하자마자 그녀가 나에게 메일을 보냈다.
