오케스트라의 자존심과 실체!
‘미국 최고의 오케스트라’를 넘어 빈 필, 베를린 필에 견주는
최고의 사운드를 이어온 시카고 심포니(CSO)가 3년 만에 두 번째 내한(2013 로린 마젤)을 음악 감독 리카르도 무티와 함께 한다.
2013년 시카고 심포니의 첫 내한공연을 지휘하기로 했던 무티는 당시 급성 독감으로 포디엄에 오르지 못해 큰 아쉬움을 남긴바 있다. 하여 CSO
창단 125주년을 기념해 완전체로 한국을 찾는 최강의 조합 ‘무티 & 시카고 심포니’를 향한 기대가 고조되고 있다. 리카르도 무티
개인으로선 12년 만의 네 번째 내한(1985 필라델피아, 1996, 2004 라 스칼라 필하모닉)이다.
1월 28일에는 베토벤 교향곡 5번, 말러 교향곡 1번이
준비됐다. CSO 감독으로 장기 집권하는 동안 게오르그 솔티가 ‘시카고 사운드’를 완성하며 남긴 대표작, 베토벤 ‘운명’을 이탈리아 오페라에서
일가를 이룬 무티는 어떤 색채로 꽃 피울지 관심을 모은다. 일사분란하게 악기군의 특성을 재배열하는 무티의 마법 같은 손놀림이 극치를 이룰 말러
1번 ‘거인’도 놓칠 수 없다.

29일에는 프로코피예프 교향곡 1번 ‘고전적’, 힌데미트 현과 관을 위한 협주음악, 차이콥스키 교향곡 4번이 준비됐다. 필라델피아 오케스트라
감독 시절 필립스에서 남긴 ‘고전적’ 교향곡에서의 명석한 해석은 세월이 지나 어떻게 영글었을까. 재기 넘치는 프로코피예프의 감각을 노회한
지휘자가 어떻게 풀어낼지, 아시아 투어에서 같은 곡을 공연하는 일본에선 가장 기대하는 작품이다. CSO의 라이벌 악단 보스턴 심포니의 창립
50주년을 기념해서 만들어진 힌데미트 작품은 라 스칼라 시절 벨칸토 발성처럼 맑게 울리던 무티의 사운드가 CSO와 함께할 땐 어떻게 예술의전당을
채울지 브라스와 스트링의 묘기를 기대케 하는 작품이다. 차이콥스키 교향곡 4번은 1996년 라 스칼라 필과 함께한 이후 20년 만에 한국팬과
다시 만나는 곡이다. 역시 청년 시절 필라델피아의 금관 사운드와 비교해 CSO는 어떤 기량을 보일지 관심을 모은다.
2016년 한국에서 열리는 최고의 오케스트라 공연은 무엇인지, 이
시대를 대표하는 마에스트로 리카르도 무티와 시카고 심포니가 그 해답을 제시할 것이다.

Riccardo Muti
이 시대를 대표하는 거장 리카르도 무티는 1941년 나폴리
태생으로 현 시카고 심포니 음악감독이자 빈 필 명예 단원이다. 1967년 청년 지휘자를 시상하는 귀도 칸텔리상을 수상했고, 1972년 클렘페러의
후임으로 영국 필하모니아 오케스트라의 수석 지휘자로 임명됐다. 1980-1992년 까지 필라델피아 오케스트라 음악 감독으로 재직하면서 1985년
한국도 방문했다. 1986-2005년 까지 밀라노 스칼라 극장의 예술 감독을 맡았고, 1987년 밀라노 스칼라 극장 오케스트라 수석 지휘자로
임명되었다. 스칼라 사임 후 특정 감독급 포스트에 취임하지 않고 객원 지휘자로 활약하다가 2010년 5월, CSO 음악 감독에
취임했다.
무티는 베를린 필과 빈
필도 정기적으로 객원지휘하고 있는데, 특히 빈 필과는 1973년 이후 거의 매년 포디움에 오르며 깊은 인연을 이어오고 있다. 1993,
1997, 2000, 2004년 빈 필 신년 음악회를 지휘했으며, 2005/06 시즌에는 30 회 이상 지휘대에 올랐다. 빈 필 중추 멤버로
구성된 빈 궁정 악단의 초대 명예 음악 감독을 맡았으며, 2011년 7월 28일 잘츠부르크 음악제 개최 중 70세를 맞아 빈 필 명예 단원
칭호를 받았다. 1971년 이래 정기적으로 잘츠부르크 음악제에 참여하여 많은 오페라와 콘서트 무대도 지휘하고 있다.
레퍼토리는 우선적으로 모국 작곡가를 많이 소개한다. 전속 계약은
아니지만 주로 도이치 그라모폰, EMI레이블과 레코딩을 진행하고 있으며, 청년 시절에는 필하모니아와 필라델피아를 중심으로 활동하며 앨범을
출반했다. 베르디 오페라 대부분은 EMI와 SONY에서 녹음했으며, 전집을 남긴 것으로는 베토벤 교향곡(EMI), 브람스
교향곡(Philips), 슈만 교향곡(EMI), 슈베르트 교향곡(EMI) 차이콥스키 교향곡(EMI), 스크랴빈 교향곡(EMI)이
있다.

1891년 창설된 시카고 심포니(CSO)는 2016년에 125
주년을 맞는다. 유럽 메이저 오케스트라를 능가하는 연주력과 조직력으로, 지금도 세계 관현악계에서 선망의 대상으로 주시하는 대표적인
오케스트라이다.
미국 오케스트라는
음질과 레퍼토리 면에서 각각의 지역성을 갖고 있는데 원만하고 뛰어난 균형 감각이 돋보이는 보스턴 심포니나 엄선된 음악감독들과 함께 꾸준히 중부
유럽 사운드를 유지하는 클리블랜드 오케스트라에 비해 시카고 심포니는 화려한 음색을 자랑한다. 현지에선 스테이지의 폭이 좁은 심포니 센터 홀에
맞춰 천장을 향해 음을 울리는 습관이 지금의 ‘시카고 사운드’를 만들었다는 견해도 있다.
125년에 걸쳐 10명의 음악감독을 배출한 CSO의 역사는 6대
프리츠 라이너, 8대 게오르크 솔티 재임기 동안 두 번의 황금시대를 거친다. 헝가리 출신의 라이너는 CSO의 기초를 구축한 지휘자로 평가된다.
수석 연주자를 적극적으로 교체했고 한때 첼리스트 야노스 슈타커를 영입하려 했다. 1950년대 중반부터 CSO 사운드는 급격한 발전을 경험했고
라이너는 RCA에서 엄청난 양의 녹음을 통해 명반을 양산했다. 라이너는 단원에 대한 신랄한 비판과 투어에서의 독자적인 행동으로 1962년
감독직을 사임했다.
장 마르티농에
이어 CSO를 물려받은 게오르그 솔티가 지금 CSO가 누리는 악단의 현재를 닦은 인물이다. 활발한 해외 투어를 실시해 세계에서 가장 뛰어난
앙상블이라는 찬사를 곳곳에서 얻었다. 1969-1991년까지 음악감독을 지냈고 1997년 타계할 때까지 거장형 지휘자와 메이저 오케스트라의 상생
모델을 제시했다. 솔티 시절 CSO 사운드는 강인한 앙상블과 파워풀한 사운드로 지칭되면서 베를린 필, 빈 필에 뒤지지 않는 역량을 보였다.
솔티는 아바도, 줄리니처럼 자신과는 다른 유형의 지휘자를 CSO에 수석 객원 지휘자로 영입하는데도 큰 역할을 했다.
1991년 바렌보임이 감독에 취임해 새 심포니 센터를 개설했다.
2010년 무티를 새 감독으로 맞이한 CSO는 “빈 필, 베를린 필과 비교해 충실하고 안정감이 있다”는 평가를 얻으며 또 다른 황금기를 구가하고
있다.

Riccardo
Muti, born in Naples, Italy, is one of the preeminent conductors of our day. In
2010, when he became the tenth music director of the world-renowned Chicago
Symphony Orchestra (CSO), he had more than forty years of experience at the helm
of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (1968-1980), the Philharmonia Orchestra
(1972-1982), the Philadelphia Orchestra (1980-1992), and Teatro alla Scala
(1986-2005). During Muti’s tenure as music director, the longest of any in La
Scala’s history, he lead the Filarmonica della Scala in hundreds of concerts all
over the world, including in Korea in 1996 and 2004. He continues to be in
demand as a guest conductor for the major orchestras and opera houses around the
world: the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic; the Bavarian Radio
Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House, the
Metropolitan Opera, and many others. Muti is an honorary member of the Vienna
Philharmonic, which gave him its Golden Ring as a special sign of esteem and
affection.
Muti has received innumerable honors from Italy, the United
States, France, Germany, Austria, Great Britain, Israel, Spain, Russia, Sweden,
and the Vatican as well as more than twenty honorary degrees from universities
around the world.
Passionate about teaching young musicians, Muti
founded the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra in 2004 and the Riccardo Muti
Italian Opera Academy in 2015 to pass on the Italian opera tradition to young
conductors and repetiteurs. Through Le vie dell’Amicizia (The paths of
friendship), a project of the Ravenna Festival in Italy, he has conducted in
many of the world’s most troubled areas in order to bring attention to and
advocate for civic and social issues.
Riccardo Muti’s vast catalog of
recordings, numbering in the hundreds, ranges from the traditional symphonic and
operatic repertoires to contemporary works. He also has written two books,
Verdi, l’italiano (published in Italian, German and Japanese) and Riccardo Muti:
An Autobiography: First the Music, Then the Words, which has been published in
several languages.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Founded in 1891, the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra is consistently hailed as one of the greatest
orchestras in the world. Since 2010, the preeminent conductor Riccardo Muti has
served as its 10th music director. Pierre Boulez is the CSO’s Helen Regenstein
Conductor Emeritus, Yo-Yo Ma is its Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant,
and Samuel Adams and Elizabeth Ogonek are its Mead
Composers-in-Residence.
The CSO’s renowned musicians annually perform
