☞cruel, kind, nice, good따위 (인간의 성질)에 대한 형용사일 경우는 for가 아니고 of를 쓴다.

* It is ..... that + S(주어)+should ----: S(주어)가 ----하는 것은 ....이다
① It is strange that you should disagree with me. (네가 나와 의견을 달리한다는 것은 이상하다)
*어구) strange (이상한)
② Your language was quite strange to me. (너의 말은 나에게는 전혀 알 수 없는 것이었다)
*어구) disagree(달리하는, 찬성하지 않는)
③ This milk disagree with me. (이 우유는 내 체질에 맞지 않는다.)
* 해설) it는 that이하를 받는다.
that앞에 good, well, right, wrong, natural, strange, curious 따위의 <의견, 감정, 판단을 나타내는 말이 있으면 that절 속에 특히 의미가 없는 should를 쓴다.※예문은 다음과 같이 고쳐 쓸 수 있다.
① It is strange for you to disagree with me.
② It is strange that he say so.(그가 그렇게 말하는 것은 이상하다)→should를 생략하고 원형 동사만 쓰는 경우도 있다.
◎ 구문연구 3
* It is ----- whether .......: ...인가 아닌가는 ----- 이다.
① It is doubtful whether they will win the game. (그들이 시합에서 승리할까 하는 것은 의심스럽다.)
*어구) doubtful(의심스러운)
② I am doubtful of his success.(그의 성공은 의심스럽다)*어구) win (--에 승리하다)
③ Nothing venture, nothing win(gain). (호랑이 굴에 들어가야 호랑이 새끼를 잡는다)
*해설) it는 whether이하를 받는 형식주어 Whether they will win the game is doubtful.로 하면 어색한 글이 된다.
<It is doubtful whether..... or not>로 할 수도 있고, 예문과 같이 or not 을 동반하지 않는 경우도 있다.
whether 대신에 if 를 사용하기도 한다.It is doubtful if he will agree with us.(그가 동의할까 하는 것이 의문이다)와 같이 할 수도 있다.이 경우는 (or not)을 붙이지 않는다.
◎ 구문연구 4
* It is ----- that....: .... 한 것은 다름 아닌---이다
① It was Jane that spoke first.( 최초에 말을 한 것은 Jane이었다)
* 해설) 문의 일부를 강조하고자 할 경우 그 강조하고 싶은 부분을 (It<was> --- that)로 둘러싼다.
강조하고 싶은 말이 사람일 경우는 who. that를 쓰고, 사물일 경우는 which, that를 쓴다.
☞ 강조 구문은 (구문연구2) 의 (It is -- that... ) 와의 차이점은 (It is --- that)을 제거하고도 문장이 성립되느냐, 성립되지 못하느냐에 있다. 성립되면 강조 구문이고 성립되지 않으면 (구문연구 2)인 것이다.
예문에서 It was --- that을 제거하면 Jane spoke first.로 되어서 문장이 성립된다.
② It was in this coffee shop that I first met my wife. → In this coffee shop I first met my wife.
(내가 아내를 처음으로 만난 것은 이 커피숍이었다) 따라서 이 예문은 강조 구문이다.
그러나 It is true that he went to Seoul with his father.(그가 자기 아버지와 함께 서울로 갔다는 것은 사실이다.) 에서 It is ---- that 을 제거하면 True he went to Seoul with his father.로 문장이 성립되지 않는다. 또 ( It is(was) .... that(who, whom, which)의 구문에서 주어, 동사 또는 전치사의 목적어, 부사어구를 강조함)
③ It is the price that frightens him. (그를 놀라게 한 것은 가격이었다.)
◎ 구문연구 5
* It is not until ----- that.....:--- 해서 비로소 .... 하다
① It is not until yesterday that I learned the news.(어제서야 비로소 그 뉴스를 알았다)
*어구) learn(배우다, --을 알다)
② Mary learned that her mother was a stepmother.(메리는 자기 어머니가 계모라는 것을 알았다.)
*해설) (연구 구문 4)의 강조 구문의 변형.
예문에서는 (It was not until ---- that...)을 제거하면 Yesterday I learned the news.로 된다.
③ It was not until the 15th century that it became possible to produce books quickly and cheaply.
(15세기가 되어서야 비로소 책을 빠르고 값싸게 만들어내는 것이 가능해졌다.)
④ It was not until I got off the train that I realized my purse had been stolen.
(열차에서 내려서야 비로소 지갑이 도난 당한 것을 알았다.)
강조하지 않는 글에서는→I did not realize my purse had been stolen until I got off the train.으로 된다.

① It is said that he was once a young men's idol.(그는 한때 젊은 사람들의 이었다고 한다)

② Once there was a giant in this tower.(옛날에 이 탑에 한 거인이 살고 있었다.)
*어구) idol[aidl]:우상, make an idol of「을 숭배하다」 *해설) (구문연구 2)와 같이, it는 that이하를 받고 있다.
It is said that은 「...인 듯하다」, 「...라고 한다」로 단언하여 강조를 약화시키는 역할을 한다.
He 를 주어로 하면→ He is said to have been a young men's idol.<단문>
기타: They(people) say ..,I am told ( we are told)...,I(we) hear의 꼴로서 「...라고 한다」, 「...라는 소문이다」의 내용으로 표현한다.

* It takes .... to ----: ---- 하기에는 .... 이 걸린다(시간 따위)에
① It will take him three hours to finish the work.(그가 일을 끝내려면 3시간은 걸릴 것이다.)
*어구) hours= many hours「여러 시간」
② There are 24 hours in a day.(하루는 24시간이다)
*해설) 시간, 노력 따위를 「필요로 하다」의 의미에서는 이 형식을 쓴다. 읽을 때에 three ours를 강하게 발음한다.
It will take three hours for him to finish the work.로 할 수도 있다.
③ It won't take you long.(너에게는 오래 걸리지 않을 것이다.)
④ It will take you ten minutes to walk to the station.(정거장까지 걸어서 10분 걸릴 것이다)
◎ 구문연구 8
* It is ---- since ......: ...의 해(몇 년, 몇 달)이 되다.
① It is three years since we parted there.(거기에서 우리가 헤어진 후 3년이 된다.)
*어구) since 「--이래,--로 부터」
② It is ten years[Ten years have passed ] since I came here.(여기 온지 10년이 났다)
*해설) since의 전후의 시제에 주의해야 한다.
이 표현은 <It is --- since+과거>의 꼴을 취하는 경우가 많다.
☞ 그러나 기간을 나타내는 어구를 주어로 했을 경우는 다음과 같이 한다.
→ Three years have passed since we parted there. (거기에서 헤어진 후 3년이 지났다.)같이 전반은 「완료시제」, since이하는 「과거 시제」를 쓴다.
③ It is about ten years since I began to devote myself to this research.(이 연구에 내가 몰두하기 시작한 이후 10 년이 된다.)
④ It is only a month since I came here, so I am not very sure yet, but the climate does not seem so bad as I feared.(내가 여기에 온지 겨우 1 개월이다. 그래서 아직 그다지 확신은 없지만, 걱정했었던 정도로 날씨가 나쁜 것 같지는 않다.)그런데 It is [has been] ten years since I came here.와 같은 It...since의 구문에서 주절의 동사로는 현재형 is를 쓰는 것이 표준적이며, 현재완료형 has been을 쓰는 것은 속어적이다.

① It won't be long before she starts walking.(잠시 후 그녀는 걷기 시작할 것이다.)
*어구) It won't be long「(시간이)오래 걸리지 않을 것이다)

① It seems that he has much to do with the scandal.(그는 그 스캔달(부정사건)과 크게 관련되어

*해설) it는 that이하를 받는 가주어.
(구문연구 6)과 같이 단정, 단언을 피하는 표현. He를 주어로 하여 고쳐쓸 수도 있다.

that...이하가 과거시제이면,
② He seems to have had much to do with the scandal. (그는 스캔달과 관계가 있었던 것 같다)로「완료 부정사」를 쓴다.「완료 부정사의 시제는 주문의 시제 (seem) 보다 앞선다.

→ It seems that she was (or has been) pretty when young.

* It happened that..... : 간혹 ....한다.
① It happened that I met her in the park.(간혹 그녀를 공원에서 만났다.)
*어구) in the park의 'in'은 「내부의 위치」를 뜻한다. in the room(class) etc.
*해설) It happened one day that a stray dog came to him.(어느 날 한 마리의 길을 잃은 개가 그에게 다가왔다.)
<It so happened that...>와 같이 so가 들어가는 경우도 있다.
② It so happened one morning that she came to the office on a bicycle.
(어느 날 아침 그녀는 회사에 자전거를 타고 왔다.)
-→ She happened to come to the office on a bicycle.
예문을 단문으로 고치면 다음과 같다.

☞ 이 표현은 문어체, 회화체는 generally, usually 와 같은 부사를 사용하며 He usually gets up before sunrise.라고 한다. 「습관으로 하다」는 He has the habit of getting up before sunrise.

* take it for granted that ..... : ... 을 당연하다고 생각한다.
① We take it for granted that we should try our best. (우리들이 최선을 다하는 것은 당연하다고 생각한다.)
*어구) take -- for granted「 -- 을 당연하다고 생각한다」
cf. He took me for my brother.(그는 나를 형으로 오인했다.)
try one's best「최선을 다하다(do one's best(utmost)」로 해석한다.
*해설) that 이하의 절을 for granted 「당연한 것으로」, take 「생각하다」로 해석한다.
② I take it for granted that you should support your family.(나는 네가 가족을 부양하는 것은 당연하다고 생각한다.)
☞이 it 가 생략된 I take (it) for granted that you'll come. (나는 네가 오리라고 (올 것으로 )생각 한다.)의 꼴도 있다.

① The book was written by a famous writer.(이 책은 유명한 작가에 의해서 쓰여진 것이었다.
*어구) write 「글을 쓰다」 변화형;write, wrote, written.
② Our son writes us every week. (아들은 우리에게 매주 편지를 보내온다.)
*해설) 예문의 「..에 -- 이 되다」 의 꼴을 수동태로 한다. 능동태로 고치면, 다음과 같이된다.
→ A famous writer wrote the book.(유명한 작가가 이 책을 썼다.)
☞수동태의 동작주어는 보통 by-- 이하로 나타내는 경우가 많지만, 그렇지 않은 경우도 있다.

*해설) know는 toⓥ를 목적어로 취하지 못한다. 수동태의 동작주가 다음과 같이 by이외의 것을 쓰는 때도 있다.
*be surprised(astonished, amazed, startled) at- 「 -- 을 보고(듣고) 놀라다」
*be pleased[delighted, rejoiced] at- 「--을 기뻐하다」,*be pleased with-「 --이 마음에 들다」,

* have been --ing : 쭉 계속 --하고 있다.
① Two gentlemen have been waiting to see you.(그 두 신사는 당신을 계속 기다리고 있습니다.)
* 어구) gentlemen -→ gentleman.
② A gentleman called to see you while you were out.(어떤 남자 분이 주인님 출타 중에 찾아 오셨습니다.)
*해설) < have been -ing>는 과거에서 현재까지 동작이 계속 있음을 뜻한다.『기다리고 있다』는 be waiting으로 표현하며, 「죽 계속 기다리고 있다」는 have been waiting,for two hours「2시간 동안」,for a long time「오랫동안」, since morning「아침부터」따위의 부사구를 동반하는 경우가 많다.
☞know「알고 있다」, have「가지고 있다」, 따위의 상태를 나타내는 동사는 I am knowing-, I am having-이라고는 하지 않는다. 그러나 have는 「가지다」가 아닌, 딴뜻에서는 진행형으로 할 수 있다.
③ I am having breakfast. 이 때의 have는 「먹는다」의 뜻이지 「가지다」의 뜻은 아니다.

① It rained after it had been dry for many weeks. (몇 주일 동안 날씨가 좋은 다음에 비 가 내렸다.)
* 어구) dry「비가 오지 않는, 날씨가 추운」
cf. wet 비의」 a dry season「건조기,갈수기」 ② You had better get your clothes dry by the stove.(난로에서 옷을 말리시오.)*해설) <had+ p. p>는 어느 과거를 기준으로 하여 (예문에서는 It rained), 그때까지의 동작의 완료, 경험, 계속, 결과를 나타낸다.☞과거에 발생한 2개의 사건을 그 순서대로 진술하면 2개의 사건이 다 과거형도 좋지만 2개의 사건의 전후관계를 명시하라면 이전의 동작은 과거완료로 한다.
The train had already started when I got to the station.(내가 정거장에 갔을 때 기차는 이미 출발했었다.)

①Mother told him that he must see the doctor at once.(어머니는 곧 의사의 진찰을 받아야 한다고 그에게 말했다.)
* 어구) see the doctor「의사의 진찰을 받다」, at once「곧」
*해설) must「하지 않으면 안된다」는 have to로 대용할 수 있다. 이것의 부정은 need not 또는 don't have to이다.
② You must to finish it by tomorrow.(너는 내일까지 그것을 끝내지 않으면 안된다.)
③You need not[don't have to] finish it by tomorrow. (내일까지 끝낼 필요는 없다.)
④The flowers must be as fresh as possible when the party begins in evening.(저녁 파티가 시작될 때 꽃들은 가능한 한 싱싱해야 한다.)

*해설)<must have +p. p>는 「과거에 ---했음에 틀림이 없다」는 가장 확실성 있는 추측을 뜻한다.

☞ must be「 ---임에 틀림없다, 해야 한다」

* 어구) express --in words「--을 말로 나타내다」,even when-- 「--의 때에도」,be moved with--「--에 감동하다scenery「풍경」cf. scene「장면, 한정된 경치」
*해설) 1.「--할 수 있다」(=be able to--) <가능> (부정은 can not)
2.「--해도 좋다」(=may--)<허가> (부정은 must not )
3. could는 「할 수 있었다」라고 하는 뜻 이외에 가정법으로「하려고 생각하면 할 수 있다」
4. could는 독립문에서 <정중한 요구>를 나타낸다.

② Can it be true---?(「그럴 리가 없는데」 사실일까?)의 뜻으로 <의문을 강조하는> 뜻으로 쓰인다.

☞ may well은 「다분히, 아마」의 뜻을 가질 때도 있다.
