[000] Now, the Rest of the Story.
[001] 19th Century Italian violinist Nicolo Paganini is often
called "the greatest violinist who ever lived."
[002] Such was his prowess, his seemingly superhuman virtuosity
that he was thought by many to have been in league with
the devil.
[003] Paganini's physical appearance enhanced that popular
suspicion.
[004] He was repeatedly described as cadaverous, a towering
gaunt figure with dark hollow eyes and long black
scraggly hair and waxy white skin.
[005] That he was the ultimate master of the violin we have
concluded from contemporary accounts of his performances
and the extremely difficult violin music he wrote for
himself.
[006] That brings me to Myron Shoenfeld.
[007] As a child, Myron studied violin. As a grown man, he
would still love violin music.
[008] Only now he'd become Dr. Myron Schoenfeld, a New York
cardiologist.
[009] A little while back, Dr. Shoenfeld was reflecting on the
life of his musical idol, violinist Nicolo Paganini, and
recalling the biographical descriptions, the actual,
physical descriptions of that legendary musician, Dr.
Shoenfeld found himself regarding Paganini as, well, as a
patient.
[010] Paganini, the doctor grew certain, had been obviously ill
all his life with a specific disease known as “Marfan's
syndrome.“
[011] Now it is not uncommon for a physician to imagine himself
back in time to diagnose, say, Caesar's epilepsy or
Beethoven's deafness and to suggest how modern medicine
might have helped.
[012] So Dr. Myron Shoenfeld published an article in the
January 1978 Journal of the American Medical Association
revealing that Paganini was the unwitting victim of an
inherited disease of the connective tissue.
[013] The violinist could have not known what ailed him for the
simple reason that the discoverer of his ailment, Bernard
Jean Marfan, was not even born until 18 years after
Paganini died.
[014] Still in retrospect, there seemed little doubt Nicolo
Paganini had Marfan's syndrome.
[015] Repeated descriptions of him are characteristic of the
disorder: tall, terribly slender, angular, hollow-eyed,
scraggly- haired, waxen-skinned, gaunt in general.
[016] Even Paganini's own physician, without knowing it, added
to the list of specific symptoms in his written medical
records.
[017] And something else.
[018] Among the potential complications of Marfan's syndrome is
an expanding aneurysm of the aortic arch, which means
before it kills, it can paralyze the laryngeal nerve, and
guess what.
[019] Before Paganini's mysterious and untimely death at the
age of 58, he lost his voice.
[020] So there seems to be no question now that Nicolo Paganini
did have Marfan's syndrome, though a cure, had it been
possible, might have robbed the world of a genius.
[021] You see the classic symptoms of Marfan's syndrome also
include an extreme laxness of the wrist and shoulder and
extraordinarily-long hyperextensible fingers, and such
physical irregularities to a violinist could serve as a
profound blessing.
[022] The abnormally supple wrist and shoulder would add a new
dimension to the art of bowing and the exaggerated
flexibility, the superindependence of the fingers would
enormously facilitate left-hand passagework.
[023] So the disease we now call "Marfan's syndrome," combined
with outstanding musicianship and showmanship, could
transform an otherwise-ordinary man into what Nicolo
Paganini was, the greatest violin virtuoso the world has
ever known.
[024] Now, you know the rest of the story.

[000] 이제, the Rest of the Story입니다.
[024] 이제야, 당신은 the rest of the story를 알고 계십니다.
