빌렌도르프의 비너스(Venus of Willendorf)와 지모상인 돌니 베스트니츠 비너스(Venus of Dolni Vestonice) 역시 흙으로 만들어졌다.
서동희는 추상성이 강한 작품(a potent body of abstract work)을 제작하기 위해 상징적이며 종교적인 표현(a glorious symbolic religious statement)과 자연의 심오한 기하학적 힘을 독창적으로 결합시켰다.
Reflections on the Ceramic Works of Dong Hee Suh
Article by Jim Leedy
Some critics have written at some length about Dong Hee Suh's use of her personal vehicle for expressing biblical imagery. This is also interesting from the perspective of art history, as clay has its own voice which is intrinsically tied to the mysteries of nature that are the foundation of ancient religions. The use of clay in religious imagery has been found as far back as the Paleolithic era. Clay images originally thought to be child-like scribbles but now believed to be shamanic symbols, can be seen in the caves at Lascaux and Altamira. Clay was the medium used for Venus figures such as the Venus of Willendorf and the Venus of Dolni Vestonice, portable representations of the mother/goddess figure.
The innate human urge for expression and the need to understand the inexplicable aspects of nature and being, fostered early beliefs which often found their representations in clay.
In this way, Suh is part of a long and ancient tradition, superbly using her art to communicate her faith. She also, however, explores new and individual uses of clay as an inventive and personal exploration of the medium. Highly educated with a doctorate, her work is skilled in processes and materials that compare to any period of ceramics, ancient or present. This knowledge gives her the freedom to accomplish her art with a sophisticated skill that reflects her material knowledge as well as her place in an international world of clay art. Perhaps no other medium in the contemporary art world has gone through such an invigorating and exploding reincarnation into the fine art world as have ceramics. Sometimes called "The clay Revolution", ceramics gas arrived at a level that is competitive with painting and sculpture throughout the ages. Still, there are those who desperately try to prevent clay from being a fine art material, In recent times, However, clay has led other so-called crafts such as jewellery, weaving and furniture-making into the high priced world of fine art.
In the case of Suh's work, the subject is moot. No longer restricted by craft as a tool not only to glorify religion but to explore the essence of art.
She seems to relate more to Donald Judd and other minimalists than to religious artists such as bosch, Brueghel and others. Suh uses a simple method of crafting with a potters tool seemingly simple clay works to achieve unlimited arrangements of sophisticated forms with a few turns, shapes and limited colour. Yet, her work has a monumentality that belies its modest size.
Simple, yet complex; small, yet monumental, Dong Hee Suh's work is many layered in structure as well as content. She has combined her dream of creating a glorious symbolic religious statement with the innovative use of the profound literal geometric power of nature to create a potent body of abstract work.
In the small intimate new gallery 221 comes a powerful showw with as much ambition as many shows in larger digs.
Dong Hee Suh's "Garden of Eden" is just that. It is a representation of the biblical garden. Here Dong Hee, an accomplished Korean Ceramicist, slices and dices the clay into swaying trees, thriving plants, soaring birds, and finally, Adam and Eve, innocent and navie, prior to the entrance of the serpent. There is a joyous atmosphere to these rhythmic forms. They are both architectural and organic. Each piece relates to the next, but each piece also stands on its own. Plants, rivers and trees are all recognizable by their articulate and fluid posture. No identity is subtitle. Although the forms are abstract, the dues are clear. Dong Hee's interest in abstract art is visible in the animation of her geometric shapes.
Her Knowledge of and passion or the Bible introduces the viewer to a new rendering of a familiar literary landscapee. Although Dong Hee's work uses thick clay slabs, it defies its substance and seems to float.
Adam and Eve dance gracefully in this paradise before they succumb to temptation. This group of 14 works pulls the viewer into an ideal environment, adding new dynamaic dimensions to a well-known story. As Dong Hee comments in an arrtist;s statement, "I intend to continue delving into the interior of Clay. My proposal is to link the metaphor of a hidden treasure at the heart of the clay to a vision of paradise.
I intend to magnify the scale of my work and to use my unique process to create an installation interpreting the biblical description of the Garden of Eden"
Dong Hee Suh is a serious artist and a serious biblican scholar, and we can look forward to future eye opening interpretations of biblical themes.
Artist Statement Dong Hee Suh
In my life and art, my parents, especially my mother's influence has been great.
In my middle and high school days, I have attended Ewha Girls' Middle and High school which was founded by the Christian missionaries, which my mother recommended for me to apply for entrance even though our family religion has been Buddhism.
With the effect of this education I have been interested in showing the Words as art, making art with clay by reading the Bible. I have been enjoying to show my faith with abstract expressions of the Words to the people around me.
