[000] And now, the Rest of the Story.
[001] The child had been missing more than a week.
[002] Parents anxious, authorities vigilant but pessimistic
because according to the best information the girl aged
12 had been abducted by 7 men and their intentions were
anything but honorable.
[003] It could have happened in any lonely street or amid the
bustle of any shopping mall in America.
[004] But this kidnapping occurred near the provincial capital
of Bita Genet, 350 miles southwest of Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia.
[005]Quite, in fact, kidnapping of a young girl is a time
honoured tradition in that country, a brutal courtship
ritual.
[006] According to the United Nations, about 3/4 of all
marriages in Ethiopia are the result of such coercion.
[007] A man wants to marry a girl, usually a very young girl,
so he and friends steal her, and beat her, and rape her
until she consents, if you may call it that.
[008] 3/4 of all Ethiopian marriages!
[009] That's precisely what happened to this particular
12-year-young girl, the one now missing more than a week.
[010] And no, the Ethiopian police do not approve, but it's a
handful of them versus 71 million countrymen whose
culture is rooted in the distant past.
[011] So the cops do what they can, but they need help and
sometimes they get help.
[012] June, 2005, 7 Ethiopianmen abducted an Ethiopian child
and took her to a secluded spot in the countryside.
[013] Beat her, day after day after day they beat and abused
her, telling her over and over that she must marry one of
them.
[014] But the little girl's cries of pain and her pleas for
mercy were heard by three members of another family.
[015] Another family.
[016] And yes, they wanted to rescue the child, but it was 3
against 7.
[017] Bad odds under almost any circumstances, perhaps
especially these.
[018] Nonetheless, the three, determined to help, managed to
chase away the seven determined to hurt.
[019] But now what?
[020] The three did not recognize the little girl.
[021] So whose was she, where did she belong?
[022] Maybe the only way to find out was to wait.
[023] So they waited.
[024] They stood guard over the child in case her tormenters
returned, figuring perhaps that people were looking for
her.
[025] Well, they were.
[026] By the time police sergeant Wondimu Wedajo arrived, the
three rescuers had been watching over the little girl
most of a day.
[027] She was back home, the last I heard, safe--one hopes--and
oh so grateful to the ones who came to her aid when
nobody else either could or would.
[028] Of course they were members of another family, a clan
whose mating rituals were more civilized, whose entire
culture richly deserves its pride.
[029] They stood guard until we found her, reported Sgt.
Wedajo, and then they just left her like a gift and went
back into the forest.
[030] And when the abductors and when the kidnappers were
finally apprehended, they told what it happened.
[031] They confessed what they had done and related the story
of how they were confronted and forced to flee by three
African lions.
[032] And now, you know the rest of the story.

[000] 그리고 지금은 the Rest of the Story입니다.
[032] 이제서야, 당신은 the rest of the story입니다.
