The first image of the Book of Changes, "The Diagram of the River", starts with a single circle, representing "0" or nothingness. The first meaning of "0" is 虛 (emptiness), 空 (void), or 無 (nothingness). The sky in its empty state is referred to as 虛 (emptiness), while an empty space on the ground is called 空地 (an empty field or space). When there is no object present, it is referred to as 無 (nothingness).
The second meaning of "0" is related to temperature. The freezing point of water, which is the standard point at which water turns to ice, is 零度 (zero degrees). One hundred degrees is the boiling point and represents a perfect score, or 滿點 (maximum points). The human body can endure temperatures from 50 degrees below zero to 50 degrees above zero, while animals can withstand temperatures up to one hundred degrees, which is the sum of warm and cold temperatures.
The third meaning of "0" is related to the boundary between existence and non-existence. The benchmark for determining whether an object has mass is 零 (zero), which represents the boundary between gas and matter. Money is a prime example of the existence or non-existence boundary, as it can come and go. It is also the benchmark for the accumulation of wealth and the creation of debt.
The fourth meaning of "0" is the boundary between the spirit and the body. This represents the boundary between humans and gods.
The fifth meaning of "0" is in mathematics, where it is used to distinguish between natural numbers and prime numbers. The digit 0 represents the boundary between prime and natural numbers. Any number below 0 is considered a prime number, while any number above 0 is considered a natural number. A number that can be divided exactly is called a 零落 (zero drop), meaning it falls into zero. This phrase means that the number is exact, with no remainder.
The sixth meaning of "0" is in military terminology, where it represents the aiming point for shooting. The aiming point is set at 0, which serves as the reference point.
The seventh meaning of "0" is in test scores, where it serves as the benchmark for whether or not a student has answered any questions correctly. If a student fails to answer any questions correctly, their score is referred to as 零點 (zero points), which means "nothing." This is also known as a "zero" score.
In all of these meanings, "0" implies a clear and precise state of being. The term "cold-bloodedness" is often used to describe someone who is precise and clear-headed. Someone who is fair and impartial is also considered "cold-blooded" for this reason.
This character can be interpreted as a combination of the characters for "rain" (雨) and "command" or "order" (令), implying an order for rain to fall. The concept behind this character seems distant from our understanding of it. However, a person with an unerring spirit who can clearly distinguish the boundary between existence and non-existence will rise to become a 天子 (heavenly sovereign) with the ability to call forth clouds and wind. This person embodies the spirit of Hanwool, symbolizing the fairness and impartiality of a 天子 who embodies the union of heaven and man.
A true person must have an unerring nature. If one acts according to one's own thoughts or standards, one is a small-minded person. One should always act in accordance with objective standards, in line with the situation at hand. The objective standards are the same for everyone, so one must not act based on personal preference. If one wants to do something, one must follow through, even if one does not feel like it. Losing consistency means losing oneself.
If one cannot handle equip weak points of situations, one cannot become a 大人 (grown-up). If one sets a standard for oneself, one must always abide by it and execute it in any situation. Even if one has personal rules that are fixed in one's own mind, one must not change them to suit one's convenience. Flexibility and execution are different concepts.
If one can distinguish between the meanings of flexibility and execution from the perspective of the divine, one can become a 大人 (grown-up) with a clear spirit.
