--------------------------------------------------------
One day is defined as the time when it becomes day and then night. There are names referring to different time zones.
First, a day is counted as five times, making up 5 days, which is called 一候 (Il-hu). 五黃極 日數 (Ohwanggeuk Il-su) is called 候 (Hu).
Second, the 7 days from Sunday to Saturday are called 一週 (Il-ju). This is considered a symbol of creation, based on the 七星數 (Chil-seong-su).
Third, 10 days are called 旬 (Soon) and 一氣 (Il-gi). The number ten has two meanings. Temporally, a seed condensed in winter sprouts in spring, grows in summer, and bears fruit in autumn. The fruit is called the "ten" horse. Hence, it is said that the fruit ripens. Spatially, it means that a closed door is opened. 氣 (Gi) also means ten, representing the culmination of negative numbers and the invisible energy that completes 萬有 (Man-yu).
Fourth, the period of 15 days, when the new moon becomes a full moon, is called 一節 (Il-jeol). It means that the crescent moon is completed in 15 days. A person becomes a perfect gentleman with the number fifteen and is called 十五眞主 (Ship-o-jin-ju).
Fifth, when the full moon wanes, the period of 30 days until the new moon is called a month. In other words, the cycle of one full moon is called a month, and the twelve months of a year make up the lunar calendar, not the solar calendar.
Sixth, a period of 90 days, which is the sum of three months, is called a "season." In a year, there are four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter, each consisting of three months.
Seventh, the period when spring, summer, autumn, and winter pass once is called a year. The word "year" refers to both the sun and the duration of one year. In other words, the moon has a lunar cycle, and the "year" is the Earth's cycle. A "year" is the time it takes for the Earth to orbit the sun once.
Eighth, in the age when people struggled to live through hard labor, it was not easy to live until the age of 60, which is called the 회갑년. So when people reached this age, they celebrated with a party. Living to the age of 70 was rare, so it was called 古稀 (고희) or 稀壽 (희수). The term 古稀 (고희) comes from the phrase "人生七十古來稀" in 杜甫 (두보)'s 曲江詩 (곡강시).
Ninth, the maximum possible lifespan of a human is set at 100 years, which is called 一世期 (Il-se-gi). During this period, people go through various milestones. First, they celebrate the 100th day after birth as a commemorative day.
Second, ten months after birth, they start to stand up. They need to reach the number ten in months to finally grow into a person who connects heaven and earth.
Third, the day a person is born is called their birthday, and they celebrate this day every year. When a person reaches one year old, they start to walk. A person needs to grow for a year to walk on two feet.
Fourth, a child starts to speak when they are around three years old. This symbolizes 三遷成道 (samcheonseongdo), which means the child begins to act like a human. Nowadays, people tend to follow the Western style and count their age as full years. In this case, it implies the time when two years, an even number in 陰陽 (Yin and Yang), have passed, which is equivalent to 720 days or 七十二屯 (72 dun) in 十乘 (shipseung).
Fifth, around the age of four, children start to learn how to read and write. I remember my grandfather teaching me 啓蒙篇 (gyemongpyeon) when I was four years old, and I was able to memorize the first line: "上有天 (sang-yu-cheon) and 下有地 (ha-yu-ji), 天地之間 (cheonji-jigan) 有人焉 (yu-in-eon)." I didn't read along, but I remember the sound of my grandfather's voice. Nowadays, children are sent to daycare centers when they turn one, as both parents typically work.
Sixth, at the age of six, children are sent to kindergarten. Daycare centers focus on nurturing, while kindergartens focus on education. However, I think the term "daycare" is incorrect for children aged one to five. The term "어린이" means "young" and generally refers to children aged 4-5 until their early school years. The current daycare centers, which take care of children aged one to four or five in place of their mothers, have the wrong name. It should be called a "nurturing center" (輔育院, boyugwon). Nurturing (보육) is actually the mother's role in raising her child. However, due to the unavoidable issue of the parents' work, the center takes care of the children during the day on behalf of the parents, hence the term "nurturing center" (보육원).
Seventh, at the age of six or seven, children finish kindergarten. This is the age when they are prepared to enter elementary school and are taught basic concepts of letters and numbers.
Eighth, at the age of eight, children enter elementary school This is the age associated with the 八卦 (eight trigrams).
Eighth, when a child becomes a third-grader in elementary school, they turn ten years old. Ten is considered a "completion number" (완성수). Thus, when they become fourth-graders, they are referred to as upperclassmen. From my experience raising eight children, I've observed that until the third grade, children tend to follow their parents wherever they go. However, starting from the fourth grade, they no longer want to follow their parents. This implies that they want to be more independent and lead their own lives. When they turn nine, they develop a sense of determination, which may be associated with the symbolism of the number nine, representing the sky of 九天 (gucheon).
Ninth, when a person reaches the age of fifteen, they are considered to have come of age. This age signifies the number fifteen, the embodiment of the 眞主 (Jinju). At this age, a person reaches physical and mental maturity, gaining awareness of their sexuality. Therefore, at the age of sixteen, they experience 二八靑春 (adolescence) or 思春期 (puberty). Confucius referred to the age of fifteen as the time when one sets their mind to study, called 立志 (ipji). For me, I set my mind to become like 元曉大師 (Wonhyo) after reading his biography during my second year of middle school. At that time, I vowed to someday spend three years in the mountains for spiritual training. At the age of fifteen, the activity of sex hormones triggers the birth of a second human being.
Tenth, in Korea's Confucian tradition, the age of twenty is recognized as the age of adulthood. Thus, a person is allowed to wear the traditional hat (冠, Gwan), and the "Gwan" ceremony is held as one of the four major rites of passage in life (冠婚喪祭). Even in modern times, when someone turns twenty, they usually complete their primary, secondary, and high school education, so they are acknowledged as an adult.
The Ju-sa faction of politicians have manipulated the younger generation by lowering the voting age to under 20, but this move has been criticized as a political coercion.
Confucius, who could not be overstated as a guiding force in the spiritual world of the East, established his spiritual will at the age of 30, and while the will to study at 15 can be considered as the "body," the spiritual will at 30 can be seen as the "function."
At 40, people reach the age of "No Doubt," where they realize the principles and can distinguish right from wrong, and are not tempted by any sweet words or different theories.
However, it wasn't until the age of 50 that one realized that their own actions were not part of their destiny, and as a result, they stepped away from the political world to focus on studying the Book of Changes and cultivating future generations.
Upon reaching the age of 60, one achieves a state of "Ear Compliance," which means that they can accept and understand the words of anyone in a compliant manner, whether they are children, adults, the ignorant, or the wise.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau discussed the human behavioral principles, saying that the stages of life are: the teenage years are a time of sweets, the twenties are a time of love, the thirties are a time of pleasure, the forties are a time of ambition, and the fifties are a time of appetite.
Depending on one's perspective, some may say that the 20s are a time of learning and a period of wandering and confusion, like a "flower pollen" stage; the 30s are a time of failure, experiencing trial and error in life and making a comeback like a "fish scale" stage; and the 40s are a time of practice, when one needs to accumulate, like a "stone pagoda" period. The term "stone pagoda" could mean the time when one should show the results of their hard work and dedication. Forty signifies the completion of everything in heaven, earth, and mankind.
The 60s are seen as a time of harvest, which means that it is time for the fruits of one's lifelong efforts to come to fruition. The 70s are considered the "stone fetus" stage. The term "stone fetus" refers to the solid, heavy body of a porcelain vessel that resembles marble, with a pale, opaque light and no absorbency. It might signify one's life experience. Living a life like a stone fetus is considered a successful life.
If one lives for a century, they have experienced all the sweetness and bitterness of life and can be said to have fully understood life. Now, even at a young age, one must continue the "path of wisdom" and be reborn. If one is reborn at a young age, they will possess the character that transcends the dimensions of "No Doubt" and "Ear Compliance," surpassing even a sage like Confucius. This is the conclusion for today.
