The Whole World is a Single Flower

Can I tell you about a flower?
When I was younger, I named myself "Yarrow" after the flower I came to love, YTarrow is a plant that grows even in the poorest conditions and doesn't need much care, Although it' s not the the fonciest flower, it is incredibly medicinal to both plants ane humans, Its tea relieves fever and headches, and its leaves can be chewed and applied to staunch bleeding, In gardens and farm fields, Yarrow attracts pollinators and repels common pests that cause plants around it to lose their essential oils, compromising their flavor and medicine.
At a young age when the ways of the people world were confusing and oftentimes disappointing, I was moved by Yarrow's resilience, medicine, and unconditional generosity to life around it, Yarrow was the first plant that led me through the gate of what I call my personal 화엄 world. From there, my eyes were opened to lessons in impermanence, interdependent arising, and harmony amongst all differences.
Fast forward a few years, I get off a train in a state across the country from where I live and I'm on my way to meet my future 은사스님 for the first time. The first thing I saw when we arrived at the temple was a flush of yarrow in full bloon under a persimmon tree heavy wigh fruit. The moment I saw yorrow, I didn't even meed to go into the temple. I knew if this techer could grow and thrive here, I could, too. Maybe this was putting too much on the line at the sight of one flower, but if not for knowing Yarrow, maybe I wouldn't be here today.
Now some more tine has passed and I'm in another new place wigh a new a name. I've traded in my cirty overalls for soft, gray clothes and my time climbing redwood and ork trees in the forest fpr life in the 총림 2) a different kind of forest with trees I'm still golden kind of forest with trees I'm still getting used to. But I trust the green path that led me here to the golden feet of Ynmmunsa's Buddha, where the 치문 trees I spend all of my time with emulate that same resilience, healing, and generosity that Yarrow first showed me. I can see it in the way we straighten each others shoes, foid each other's laundry when we' re runninsg late, brew hot tea for each other and on cold days, and help each other woth our classical Buddhist text translations. I can see it in the way we fight to be the first to apolgize, the way we share everything we have, and talk through everying together no matter how trvial or grand the issue is. I'm making the familiar unfamiliar, with the help of my 도반, and I'm OK with my 화엄 world merging with the people world.
I think of the passage in The Flower Flower Adormment Sutra, 화엄경, 심불급중생心佛及衆生이 시삼무차별是三無差別 ― which says, 'these three' the mind, Buddha, and all beings hve no distinction,' In this wy, the Buddha I see in Yarrow and all of my of my plant teachersis no different from me.
Do you know who lives around you, towering over your, thwering over your head or providing soft landing for your feel? Do you know whose leves you sweep during 운력, whose roots, leaves, and fruit end up in your 발우 bowls?
Here at Unmmusa, we live in a biodirerse bowl of mountains with all kinds of different people, It is our every day backdrop and scene for the moviie we call our lives. When we take the time to know who;s around, the whole world becomes our 법당, and the landscape around us a 탱화 of teachers and bodhisattvas. Thus I vow to continue my practice, until a mountain is just a mountain and a flower is just a flower.
