[000] Now, the Rest of the Story.
[001] It was to be the cultural event of the season, the debut,
the premier performance, of the nation's first-ever
full-size all- string orchestra, a group called "The New
England String Ensemble."
[002] Now, there are innumerable so-called chamber ensembles
throughout the United States, many of them all strings,
but never a group of these proportions: 24 world-class
first-chair-grade string players on the same stage.
[003] The New England String Ensemble would come to life at 8
p.m. Sep. 14, 1994, in the Endicott College auditorium,
Beverly, Massachusetts.
[004] The day and the hour approached.
[005] At 7:30, half an hour before the premier downbeat, there
was trouble with the auditorium lights.
[006] Lightening, it seemed, had struck a transformer.
[007] "Would the performance begin on schedule?," anxious
impresarios wondered.
[008] Technicians assured them it would, and it did.
[009] French-born conductor Christophe Chagnard strode on stage
to polite applauds.
[010] In the first half, renowned Boston Symphony flutist
Fenwick Smith was soloist.
[011] The response was warm.
[012] Intermission.
[013] Thereafter, Mozart, the beloved "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik."
[014] First, second, third movements quite acceptable it
appeared from the clapping.
[015] Then came the fourth movement , and right in the middle
of that fourth movement, the auditorium lights, I mean
all of the auditorium lights, went out.
[016] Now, try to picture this. A large orchestra, two dozen
musicians in mid performance, with one eye on the score
and the other on the conductor, suddenly they see
nothing, nothing.
[017] And the conductor sees nothing and the audience sees
nothing.
[018] But do you know what?
[019] Somehow, someway, the New England String Ensemble kept
playing.
[020] In utter darkness, they proceeded apparently effortlessly
through the fourth movement of the Mozart.
[021] Minus the continuous prompting of the conductor's baton,
those 24 string players kept right on going in perfect
tempo and in unison.
[022] And as the audience listened spellbound, the orchestra
proceeded to the conclusion of the piece and fell to
simultaneous silence as though, although impossibly, on
cue.
[023] And still in darkness, the whistling, shouting, stomping,
thunderous ovation erupted, and when the bravos, at last,
fell silent, somebody in the audience withdrew a pocket
flashlight and then another audience member and another
until nine concert -goers were moving slowly toward the
stage with tiny-lighted flashlights.
[024] And with the musicians' musical scores thus illumined,
the concert continued, proceeded flawlessly to its
triumphant conclusion.
[025] In the years, perhaps in the centuries, to come, the
prestigious New England String Ensemble would give some
remarkable performances, but none so magical as its first
in the summer of 1994.
[026] You see, with no indication of the technical difficulties
that would befall the orchestra's debut, the conductor
planned his premier program around a single idea, a
concept based on musical selections with the same theme,
a collection of nocturnes you might call it.
[027] Without ever imagining that his orchestra would be born
in the dark, conductor Christophe Chagnard had entitled
its debut beforehand "A Musical Journey into Night," but
now you know the rest of the story.

[000] 이제, the Rest of the Story.
[019] 어떻게, 어떻게든 하여, the New England String Ensemble은
당신은 the rest of the story를 아시고 계십니다.
