One Quiet Passion
Don't Move, Die and Rise Again -- UHM Tae Woong, who carries the resurrection of TV miniseries [Resurrection]
written by PARK Hyun-Jung
translated by 늙은느티나무 at http://cafe.daum.net/uhmsky
UHM Tae Woong's face changes in a breeze. Without any particular invention, with just a simple raising of his eyebrows. When he painfully smiles at the girl whom he loves, his face is an honest and innocent rural youth's. But when he looks at the partner of a marriage of convenience with wearily gathering brows, he is a cold urbanity itself. Completely different persons.
He is highly praised for his part as twin brothers who are quite dissimilar in personality in TV miniseries [Resurrection] (KBS). He surely owes the critical acclaim to his performance itself, but his face plays a great role, too. His face is one of a kind, so perfect for transformation, with fine and delicate lines which overlap and cross each other, making various combinations.
Maybe he has endless collection of masks made of those combinations in him, and picks up one and acts when necessary. Byun Hakdo in [Sassy Girl, Chun-hyang], the villain with the notorious coke can in [Public Enemy 2], and the young man with a time-limited life in [Blue Skies of Jeju Island]. They are so different that I could not imagine his face in non-acting hours. I had a no clue whatever.
At last, he walked into the studio. His face seems, say, to have emptied, cleared away and laid aside the things inside. I had a strong feeling that this interview would not be easy. It was not that he appeared arrogant, nor that he appeared sensitive and nervous. In a word, he had no bubble. A person without any puff around him. Slightly different from being calm, too, and not languid, but thoroughly cleared of the surface froth.
Frankly speaking, I could not find any aura of the flamboyant self-consciousness which is usually detected in actors, especially in newcomers. Interviewing a person who has no intention to decorate himself is thorny. Because it is exactly interviewer's mission, to strip off the wrapping paper around the interviewee.
Inevitably my first question was this: "You seem to have no intention to advertise how gorgeous you are. For interviewer's part, it is easier when the interviewee has... (laughs)" His answer was slow and careful. "No, I don't think I have... such a thing." I asked again. "Do you just seem to have no intention, or do you really have no intention?" He got more careful. "Looking gorgeous... Sure, I wish to do. It will be great. But I don't think I have something gorgeous myself... It is not achieved by just wishing, is it?"
My guess was right. He was an interviewee difficult to deal with. He spoke few words and replied slowly. And finally, his answers were not clear. They were vague. However, I became to have a kind of faith and favor in him, because he talked about the questions with his real thoughts. He did not reply halfheartedly nor conventionally. Now, this man is not one who lowers his guard and opens his heart just because you make careless flattery. He would speak out only when the question is convincing enough.
"I heard that you have had a so troubled way to be an actor. Long, long out-of-work days during which you had to struggle to get a part. Also I heard that you had failed in auditions more than a hundred times. What do you think was the reason?" "Frankly, my acting was not good. Yes, that's the reason."
"Your face looks lonely, and can give some dark impression. I guess it could be a handicap for your early career. Why, haven't you wished that you had appearance of those who take leading roles from the beginning, like CHO In-Sung?" For a moment, a look like a buddy who says a very intimate thing with a drink went past over his face. "Yes, I have. Why not? A director even openly told me what an unpleasant face I had..." His expression, with a tinge of suffering undeserved scolding, looked so innocent like a child that all the people around smiled.
"Oh, my. UHM Jung-Hwa is your sister. I little suspected that you had had that hard times, but it is true!" "That's not an issue for which she could do something, and I had no notion of being helped by her... She was actually busy enough with her own business... Most of all, neither she nor I wanted it in that way." I could feel some loneliness in his words. Some seriousness and solitude borne by those who cannot even imagine -- not that they do not, they can not -- breaking through by relying upon others.
"[Blue Skies of Jeju Island] was very touching. I felt a chill creep over me watching your portrayal of a man being fed up with life and sick of irreparable love. Frankly, I firmly believed. That this man had had a experience of being disgusted with life before..." "Yes... I think I had."
"I read somewhere that you let your love be away from you when you were unknown and it still hurts... Does it have something to do with the experience?" "Sometimes, though you are in love with this girl, you can see only the end of it. You feel that you are not able to do anything for her, nor will be... It was a deep wound, I guess, that experience," he said with a far-off look.
It recalled to my mind his words which I had seen in an article about him. He was reported to say, that he did not really feel yet, "I am not sure... it might be just a game to them," commenting on the sensation of coming into the sudden spotlight. The words had appealed to me. This man has too deep memory of what he could not have to be intoxicated with what he gets now. This man is not yet so used to enjoying what he has now -- that was my daring guesswork.
It is only a guesswork, but in that context, the roles of Seo Ha-Eun(Gang-Hyuk) and Shin-Hyuk who have to strive against the past in [Resurrection] is amazingly fit for him. He described the two characters sincerely, and I asked him whether he was more fascinated by Shin-Hyuk who was cool-headed but also had deep pain rather than Ha-Eun who might be called typical due to his devoted love. His answer about acting was much clearer than about UHM Tae Woong the human being. "I liked playing Ha-Eun better. Because Shin-Hyuk has some resemblance to Byun Hakdo, actually. Fresh challenge is better for me. And more interesting to play..."
I saw his hands. Closed, or spread out, they were very delicate and graceful, with some expression. In [Resurrection], when Ha-Eun should like to hold Eun-Ha in his arms, it is always his hands that tell most. While UHM Tae Woong's protean face makes up a good brother's composure trying to hide his feelings, his long fingers, shaking, hesitating and bothered, reveals the true inner conflict in full.
In the bus scene in [Resurrection], his hands failing to hold Eun-Ha and closed to the last, manifested so great sadness that made tears in my eyes. His acting definitely knew about the pale but blue and hurtful color of sadness. It is not just worked-out heavy sadness adapted from a sad memory of the past with a script in his hand. Those kind of fabricated feelings can make face cry but cannot make hands cry.
You are so busy lately, aren' t you, I asked. He answered that perhaps he is learning how people get nasty. "AHN Sung-Gi is my role model as an actor and a human being both, but it is not easy..." He seemed awfully busy, and to feel a big burden about the production. The interview ended. The look with rich shade in his eyes, seen in screen, was also true in reality. It was deep. His face, which can make thousands of masks like an empty vessel, a great gift for an actor, showed a shadow as thick as can be called anguish, earnestness as far as can be tactlessness, and silence gazing at himself, even at trifling questions.
I guess somehow I discovered the origin of the power of the performance of this actor UHM Tae Woong, not frivolous, not bubbling, deep and quiet but not darkly languid. From where come the expressions held in his long and elegant fingers, looking as if smiling and sobbing when seated still.
