1. I hear you can’t find a decent bagel anywhere in LA.

Many people think that food is somewhat standard throughout the |
2. We’re competing for a big contract to market a new energy drink. |
In this dialogue, Brett’s new boss says that their firm is competing for a big contract. In other words, the firm is striving to attain an advantage over other firms and win the contract. A few other phrases we might use to express this idea are: “to struggle for,” “to be in the running for,” or “to jockey for.” The first, however, implies some disadvantage with respect to the competition. |
3. You’ll need to sort through these other proposals before the weekend. |
If you have to sort through a number of items, you’re probably arranging them according to type or quality. The goal might simply be to put things into their proper categories, or it might be to select against some items in favor of others. The expression “to sift through” is close in meaning. And some other useful verbs might be “assort,” “classify,” or “evaluate.” |
4. The firm needs this contract badly. |
In this instance, “badly” doesn’t mean the contract is undesirable. Here, it is used to say the contract is important or essential to the firm. An alternative way to express this thought might be, “The firm really needs this contract,” or “It’s imperative that the firm get this contract.” |
5. Bring me an iced latte; no ice, soy milk, and two sugars.
|
There’s a good chance you learned to quantify words like sugar by specifying precise measurements, such as tablespoons, cups, or grams. But if you were to ask a barista for two sugars, or even two coffees, it’s implied that you want two of whatever the standard quantity.
Recently, the coffee order has become another way for people to express their individuality. Hang out in a coffee shop long enough and you’ll probably hear some interesting requests. Perhaps Mr. Daniels wishes to show that he is particular and someone who knows exactly what he wants. |

Savantism
How long would it take you to work out the number of seconds a seventy year old man has lived without using a calculator? In 1751, Jerediah Buxton, one of the earliest documented cases of savantism, provided the correct answer to an even more complicated problem in about a minute and a half. The term “savantism,” an abbreviation for savant syndrome, refers to a rare condition in which a person exhibits a remarkable ability, and, at the same, is handicapped in other ways. Often savants’ abilities are limited to a narrow area such as music, mathematics, or art.
The 1988 film Rain Man made the case of Kim Peek famous worldwide. From an early age, Peek could finish large texts in record times remembering 98 percent of what he had read. But, like many savants, he has trouble with tasks as simple as tying his shoes.
There are thought to be fewer than 100 people in the entire world that possess abilities like Peek’s, and scientists have struggled to explain the phenomenon. Recently, however, Australian scientists claim to have made some progress in understanding what causes these abilities to develop. They say that because a specific area of the brain doesn’t work very well, other abilities may be unlocked. While it’s a long way off, this research might just mean that each of us has these extraordinary abilities locked somewhere inside of us.

Why apples?
An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Modern research has provided scientific evidence that supports this age-old advice. Apples and all other members of the fruit family possess properties that actually help you reduce the risk of developing cancer. In addition, men who eat five or more apples a week appear to have better lung function than men who do not eat this fruit. Researchers have also reported that fresh apples have the highest levels of substances that fight cell damage when compared to other fruits and vegetables.
While no one knows exactly how long apples have existed, there is proof that people have enjoyed apples for at least 750,000 years. Apples were a favorite of the ancient Romans and Greeks. The first settlers to the

Explanation:
1. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
keep away 는 ‘멀리하다, 거리를 유지하다’ 라는 뜻입니다. keep A away from B (A를 B로부터 멀어지게 하다)의 표현으로 자주 쓰입니다.
Ex) You should keep your computer away from liquids.
2. Modern research has provided scientific evidence that supports this age-old advice.
Ex) There is research that proves exactly what I’m saying.
3. Men who eat five or more apples a week appear to have better lung function than men who do not eat the fruit.
본 동사는 appear로서 appear to be는 ‘~처럼 보이다, ~인 것 같다’ 라는 뜻을 갖고 있습니다. appear 다음에 that절이 오기도 합니다.
Ex) He appears to be in good condition.
= It appears that he is in good condition.
