Topic 1: The Pros and Cons of Being a Socialtainer
Celebrities have really been getting into social issues these days. The sexy singer Lee Hyori has been giving a shout out to ‘love for strays’ while Kim Jang Hoon is all about ‘attention toward Dokdo’ and donations. They’re not the only ones, as other entertainers such as Kim Yeo Jin are voicing their opinions on debatable issues such as tuition, temporary employees and job layoffs.
We call them socialtainers (social+entertainer). The statements they make spread through various routes, mixing with their social influence to change the behavior of the public. Recent interest on such figures has surged, with ordinary people, industries, broadcasting systems and even politicians tuning in to what they have to say.
Can change images and behaviors of the public
As of now, most socialtainers are subjects of respect and exaltation. When stars use their influence to speak of social problems and ask for a proper change, the public join together to send in their support and love. They start to show an interest in issues that were relatively in the shadows, and this kind of interest sometimes leads to actual change.
Taking on the role of a socialtainer helps celebrities shed or improve the familiar and light images they retained as mere entertainers. Sometimes having an image as a socialtainer brings in drama roles or CF contracts.
Misleading actions or acting for show may pose problems
The problem comes when people start to blindly follow unconfirmed information. If the celebrity judges wrongly and acts based on fragmented information, the public may find themselves participating in a misleading instigation.
The possibility of having a celebrity overdo it or say something just to grab attention also poses many problems. Kim Gyuri once found herself embroiled in a controversy after she overdid it and compared U.S. beef to poison cyanide, and things only got worse when an old photo of her eating a hamburger made with U.S. beef was brought to attention.
Celebrities must also guard against mixing up their jobs. Getting too into social issues or planning a transformation to a politician, riding on the tide of public support, has a great possibility of leading to a bad end. Socialtainers must work hard in their own areas, and simply show that they’re aware of and are acting for certain social issues.
We look forward to seeing socialtainers use their influence to lead the public to the right foundations on which they can make their own decisions which feel right for them.
Questions
1. Do you think celebrities should be judged on not only their performance but also what they say or how they act? (as a socialtainer?)
2. How would you react if one of your favorite celebrities said something inappropriate or an opinion you disagree with?
3. Do you think socialtainers have any influence on the society? (If so, positive or negative?)
4. Do you think socialtainers’ opinions should be listened to and valued, just as we listen to professional speakers’ opinion? Or some people often mockingly say that every word celebrities say on their SNS becomes a news article. (Hinting that they receive more attention than it should) What do you think?
5. Are you conscious of what people think of your SNS activities? (Kakaotalk profile, Facebook, Tweeter, blogs, etc.) Do you pay attention to their reactions?
Topic 2: Gender role
Korean women once enjoyed nearly equal legal status with men, but that changed over the course of the Chosun Dynasty, especially as Confucianism gained strength. During this period women were not to be seen by anyone outside the family and they remained confined at home. (One of the traditional games wherein young women stand on a kind of teeter-totter(시소) would allow girls to catch a glimpse of the world outside the walls of her home). The only time a woman could go out, albeit briefly, was in the evening. A bell would ring, warning men off the streets and women, cloaked from head to toe, would be allowed to run errands, etc.
Today, while Korean laws give women near equal status, they are often neither applied nor enforced. Change is happening, however. The majority of Korean women do go to university, today. However, when they graduate, even if their grades are higher than their male colleagues, they are unlikely to be hired at the same job or pay level. Women are still expected to make coffee and wipe the desks of their male colleagues. Companies still prefer to hire less-qualified males than invest in a woman who will leave when she marries or who will have family responsibilities that will prevent her working late or socializing with colleagues – in other words, she won’t be a good team member. Some Korean companies still pressure women to leave their jobs when they marry or when they are pregnant.
In the case of divorce, custody is still often granted to the father, especially in the case of sons. Although the law recently changed (in the 1990’s) and men no longer have automatic custody and now have some responsibility for the financial well-being of their families, this is rarely enforced.
