LOS ANGELES, California—Without meaning to, and through the sheer comic bravado of his cameo performance in “Tropic Thunder,” Tom Cruise has stolen the thunder from the movie’s lead stars, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black and Ben Stiller.
In the action comedy which also features Fil-Am actor Reggie Lee, Tom is absolutely hilarious in his short role as Lee Grossman, the nasty head of a studio making a star-studded war film in a jungle somewhere in Asia. He is almost unrecognizable in a fat suit.
Characterization
In his review of “Tropic Thunder,” Variety’s Todd McCarthy echoed the gleeful reception that Tom’s performance has been getting at press screenings: “Looking uglier than one could ever have imagined possible, Cruise has been transformed into a bald-pated, hirsute, porcine, sulfur-mouthed terrorizer who rules the roost from a high-tech bunker. At any greater length, the characterization would have to be deepened or it would become tiresome, but Cruise gives it an unexpected spin that makes this a wonderful match with his ferocious supporting turn in ‘Magnolia.’ ”
That surprise twist is Tom suddenly breaking into a dance—imagine him as this “porcine” guy doing all those hip-hop moves and spanking gestures. The movie is worth seeing just for those sequences. We predict they will become popular clips on YouTube. Tom’s hip-shaking adds a dimension to his mean movie-tycoon character who harangues Reggie’s guerrilla character on the cell phone. The superstar manages to earn as much buzz as Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal in this comedy about an Oscar-winning thespian who goes as far as having his skin surgically darkened to play a black actor.
Jack Black, who plays one of the Hollywood brats who ends up in a real-life combat with drug-making rebels headed by newcomer Brandon Soo Hoo and Reggie, gave us this answer when we asked him about Tom’s cameo in the film: “Tom Cruise’s dancing is really remarkable. I think some people forget what a great performer he is because he’s been such a huge celebrity and star for so long that it becomes his whole persona. This role is a showcase for his true talents behind all the hoopla and the tabloids. There’s a great artist in him, too. It’s cool to see him blossom in a new direction.”
In a separate interview, Ben Stiller, who also directs the movie, said, “It was great to see Tom be able to do something totally different and really commit to being that guy and having fun with it. You don’t see him being funny that often. It is great to see the way the audiences at advance screenings have been really embracing him in that role. It’s a nice thing.”
Cameo
Ben told us how the cameo, possibly the best this year, came about: “It was a very unique situation because the part was not in the script. I gave Tom a copy of the script for him to look at as a friend. I wanted to get his feedback because he’s a really smart guy. When it comes to movies, there’s nobody better than Tom to get feedback on. So I gave him the script. He said, ‘It’s really great that you make fun of the actors. But what about the studio guys? There’s that other side that you’re not having fun with.’
Questions
“That gave me the idea because we always had these questions. What’s happening back in the studio when these guys are out in the jungle? So that gave me the idea that maybe the studio doesn’t want to save these actors because they could cash in on the insurance money and actually make their money back. That fit into the story. Justin (Theroux, cowriter) and I went back to the script and we wrote that in. I showed the script to Tom again. I thought, maybe Tom might want to play the agent. He said, ‘I could play the studio guy. That could be fun. I want to have really big hands.’ Then I thought that it would be interesting to see him balding, to see him really disappear into this character.
“When we did a screen test with the makeup, Tom said, ‘As this guy, I want to be moving, like dancing a little bit.’ So he started dancing during the screen test. There was no music playing. In the editing room, I put music on the screen test and it really made me laugh. I thought it was just so weird and funny when he’s doing this crazy hip-hop dance. So again, we wrote that into the script. I was so into it and enjoyed it so much that I thought it would be good to have Tom dancing in the end credits. I asked him if he could dance in the end credits. He was excited by it. I have never seen anybody jump into something or have fun with it or be more game than Tom.”

감사합니다~ ^^ 탐 연기에 대한 칭찬을 읽으니 가슴이 두근두근하네요~ 탐 덕분에 평소의 벤 스틸러 영화보다 더 흥행이 잘 될 듯한 예감이 들어요.
