Minimalist Style Popular for Home Decor, Survey Finds
When looking at home decor, do you prefer a simple style? If so, you may be a minimalist. ㅡ Minimalism is a style of design or living that focuses on removing anything that is unnecessary or excessive. And a survey of 2,000 Americans found that nearly 60% think of their home decor as minimalist.
The survey was done by OnePoll for Canvaspop, an art-printing company, and looked at participants' art and style preferences.
When choosing art for their homes, 51% said they choose art that is meaningful to them while 39% look for something that matches their home decor and 38% want art that might start a conversation.
Artwork of nature or landscapes were the most common, with 53% of people saying they had them in their homes — more than the 45% who had artwork of people and 39% who had artwork of animals. When it came to personal photos, 44% said they prefer not to use them in their home decor.
On average, the participants said seven pieces of art per room is more than enough.
Forty-one percent said they feel lost when choosing art. Reasons included challenges in finding art that is the right size for their living space, and feeling overwhelmed by the number of options to choose from.
The survey also looked at personality differences between those who identified as minimalists or "maximalists" — or those who like having excess in their style choices.
Only 29% of minimalists think of themselves as "creative," compared with 41% of maximalists. Maximalists also reported a higher satisfaction with their lives than minimalists.
But whether they were minimalists or maximalists, more than 60% of participants said their goal with home decor is to create a relaxing living space, more than those who want it to be functional or luxurious.
