[000] Now, the Rest of the Story.
[001] In Orlando, Florida, around the turn of the century,
there was a place youngsters used to stop on their way
home from school, a favorite hangout called
"(Hungerford's) Restaurant and Bakery."
[002] (Hungerford's) had 2 main attractions: homemade candy and
(Hiram Colder).
[003] (Hiram) was a mysterious individual.
[004] He rarely spoke, almost never smiled.
[005] The youngsters, who frequented the (Hungerford's),
speculated endlessly about (Hiram).
[006] A new comer to Orlando in 1888, (Colder) was promptly
hired at (Hungerford's) as a baker and [x] counterman.
[007] When not baking in the kitchen, (Hiram) just sat behind
the counter quietly.
[008] And those recalling (Hiram) from those days described a
man of average height and build, usually plainly dressed
in breeches and a shirt.
[009] It was said that (Colder) had a wife named Sarah, and
Sarah died October 2, 1910, and (Hiram) was never the
same after that.
[010] Heartbroken, virtually frantic with grief, (Hungerford's)
baker eventually quit the job to spend hours each day at
Sarah's grave.
[011] (Colder,) who could barely afford the expensive monument
purchased for Sarah, soon lost everything--money was
first to go, and health followed quickly.
[012] And the disease (Hiram) contracted, pellagra, was once
common among alcoholics and depressives.
[013] On July 13, 1914, (Hiram) died from it.
[014] (Colder's) last home was an Orange County institution for
indigents, the final resting place an unmarked grave in
the local potters field.
[015] 26 years in Orlando, and nobody even suspected the rest
of the story.
[016] That (Hiram Colder, Hungerford's) introverted baker and
counterman was not a man at all.
[017] No, (Hiram) was a she, a woman whose secret shame drove
her to a lifetime in disguise.
[018] Discovered in (Hiram's) Bible after her death was the
explanation for it all, an assortment of documents pieced
together, a strange story.
[019] About a teenage girl living in New York City, giving
birth to a child out of wedlock and running away with the
infant, hiding and travelling.
[020] By the time the unwed mother reached Orlando, her
daughter was just old enough to pass for somebody's young
wife.
[021] And thus, further to spare the daughter the disgrace of
illegitimacy, was conceived an elaborate deception.
[022] The unwed mother from New York would dress and act as a
man, a man named (Hiram Colder), and her daughter would
assume the role of (Hiram's) bride.
[023] It was Sarah, the same daughter, for whom (Hiram) grieved
herself to death.
[024] And yet while investigators have not discovered (Hiram's)
original name beyond that of (H. D. Colder), they have
revealed the true significance of (Hiram's) 26-year
charade.
[025] You see woman suffrage was not legal in the state of
Florida until it was nationally approved with the passage
of the 19th Amendment, that would be in 1920.
[026] That was 6 years after (Hiram Colder) died.
[027] And yes, (Hiram) was a registered voter and yes that
means that (H. E. Colder), an unwed mother from New City
as (Hiram) the baker in the attire of a man became the
first United States woman ever, ever to vote.
[028] And now you know the rest of the story.

[000] 이제 the Rest of the Story입니다.
[015] 올란도에서 26년, 그리고 아무도 심지어 the rest of the
[028] 그리고 이제야 당신은 the rest of the story를 알고
