You have not so many days to live;
so, don't be self-conscious
or get stressed by anything.
Think of the hills and rivers you have crossed.
Aren't they enough?
You have reached the age to live in comfort,
a real comfort.
Old sages enjoyed writing off the top of their head
going wherever their feet took them;,
So, live like them for the rest of your life.
Only by doing so, you will be able to happily
leave this world full of trouble and controversy.
Flower knows when to fall as it knew when to bloom.
It realizes the day of its fall approaching
as it loses its petals to the wind one by one,
its stalk getting dry and twisted due to lack of sap.
That's why it receives butterflies and bees
with its still-remaining petals and pistils
to give them the last drop of its honey,
smiling brightly toward the sky.
3. 천국
My baby, your bright smile lights up
my heart full of gloom like a candle;
Your sudden whining brings
mountainous waves of worry to my heart;
Your loud cry sounds a thunderous warning
to my feckless life.
When you stop crying and open your black eyes
to stare at me, I see myriad stars shining in your eyes.
I feel like hugging you so much as to feel pain in my heart
and the moment I hold you in my arms, the pain disappears,
which proves you were a part of me since a long time ago.
My baby,
My love,
My alter ego,
Even though I might love you giving my body and mind,
I'd never be able to love you as much as I wished.
Because of you, I breathe alive and continue to exist.
Because of you, I call the world full of trouble a paradise.
Even though the world might test you over and over,
my love for you will burn until my last breath.
Man instinctively loves beauty.
So, he is attracted to it, indulges in it
and parts with it in the end.
He has his heart flutter being attracted to it,
feeling more thirsty the more he indulges in it,
feeling sad when he parts with it.
Even when he parts with beauty,
he lives hoping to regain it.
Realizing he can never regain it,
he feels despair and pain.
When he cannot find, see or feel beauty,
he parts with this world finally.
The gravest sin man can commit is to waste his life.
For all other sins on earth, he can beg for God's forgiveness
ceasing to commit them; but, as for the sin of wasting his life,
he has to leave this wonderful world in bitter tears caught by
Grim Reaper without even a moment to beg for His forgiveness,
the moment it's proven that he has wasted his life,
as a death-row convict is dragged to execution ground.
Man's futile desire to pursue something beyond his limitation
and his pursuit of useless knowledge make him waste his life.
Failure to sacrifice himsefl for his loved ones,
failure to give them joy, happiness, and hope.
failure to try to serve the world in one way or another,
all end up making him waste his life.
Wasting life is the gravest sin; so, even people
who have spent many years with the sinner
don't memorialate him after his death.
I've lived so long
as to have much less days to live
than those I have already lived,
but I am still a child
that cannot see even an inch ahead.
I boasted my achievement by sheer luck
to be the one by my ability,
pretending to see far into the future
when I couldn't see an inch ahead.
I constantly tried to walk a tightrope
but fell from it always, barely managing
to pass all crises thanks to good luck.
Realizing my blunder belatedly, I feel regret
that weighs on my heart like tons of iron.
Appreciating the luck that kept me safe until now
I lonesomely trudge back home, treading on
the last patch of time that passes like an arrow.
Rioters advertise until I am fed up with it
the lawless country they made is the just
and fair one meeting the demand of the day.
Anyone who opposes them is dragged away
to get a group beating; so, everybody should
keep quiet without telling what he wants to say.
Everything I see on my way to Bongpyung 5-day market
is the product of sleek modern efficiency--not only the
highway but the store, house, factory and golf course.
In Bongpyung 5-day market, it is hard to recognize the
itinerant vendors that the novelist Hyoseok Lee described;
Instead, I find a long line of small shops with a roof made
of unified white tent. Shopkeepers loudly tout for business.
Wherever I go in Pyungchang, I see more flowers than people,
but some flowers have already faded and some start fading.
The same thing happens to man, which makes me feel sad.
Life is a sheer joy for kids visiting the market they rarely visit.
They squeeze in between people and run at every chance,
giving their young parents a hard time controlling them.
White-faced young men and women, mostly fat, who need dieting,
walk by wearing a jubilant smile, holding or looking at their cellphone.
They are city-dwellers visiting here over the weekend, who are more
interested in sightseeing than shopping.
Missing the famous buckwheat flower, I relishly eat buckwheat jelly
at a crowded jelly diner, whose owner greets me with a wide grin.
At a corner of the market, some old men of white hair and haggard face
apparently in their late seventies sluggishly chat sitting at a white table,
sharing the white rice wine.
They offer a bowl of rice wine to a disabled old man of their age passing
by riding an electric wheelchair.
They talk about the good old days in their youth, talking and listening
listlessly without showing much interest to each other.
The deep wrinkles on their face and the back of their hand tell what they
went through in their lives.
Soon their conversation stops and silence hangs for a while until one of
the old men yawns and lifts his head to look up at the distant mountain.
After spending the hours of passion, the sun moves toward its resting
place in the evening glow.
The glow dyes the entire market in red. It paints in one color red, the
old men's faces, their white hair, the white rice wine on the table and
the white tent roof of all shops in the market.
