Unit 1. Proverbs ※ 주어진 글을 읽고 물음에 답하시오. _____________________________________________________________________________________ 1. ⓐProverbs have probably been around as long as civilization and are far more important than most people usually think. Children, for example, will often learn basic ( ⓑ ) from these short and clever sayings. They may learn ⓒthrift through remembering a grandparent’s use of ⓓ“Waste not, want not.” or decide to tell the truth rather than lie upon ( ⓔ ) that “Honesty is the best policy.” Still others may ⓕpersevere in a difficult job or task because they remember ⓖ“Little strokes fell great oaks.” These quick and catchy phrases, ⓗwhile used by all people, have specific relevance for children ⓘbecause of their ease and use of wordplay to reinforce the message. _____________________________________________________________________________________ 1. ⓐ 문장을 우리말로 옮기시오. far more important: 훨씬 더 중요한(비교급 앞의 far는 ‘훨씬, 더욱 더’를 의미한다. far 이외에 even, much, a lot도 쓰인다.)
* because of ~: ~때문에 (답) 그것들(속담들)이 쉽고 전달 의미를 강화하기 위하여 말놀이 형식으로 되어 있어서 _____________________________________________________________________________________ 2. Proverbs are found in almost every culture of the world. This ⓐholds true even for those cultures that do not have writing. Indeed, proverbs become particularly important to ⓑthese cultures because they become ( ⓒ ) to transmit the thoughts of one generation to the next through an oral tradition. ⓓIt might not be too much of an exaggeration to say that proverbs help a community or a culture be that community or a culture. Proverbs help to preserve ⓔcontinuity in a community’s heritage and even help to establish that community’s identity. One English writer observed that ⓕthe genius, wit, and spirit of a nation can be seen in its proverbs. _____________________________________________________________________________________ 1. ⓐ에서 holds 대신에 쓰일 수 있는 동사는? * hold true: ‘사실이다’를 의미한다. Look at the diagram of the human body. How many of the body organs can be replaced, if they stop ( ⓐ work ) or are damaged in accidents? At the present time, only the brain can not be replaced. Artificial or ( ⓑ ) organs from a donor can now replace any of the other organs in the human body. Still, the ( ⓒ replace ) of body parts is not as new as you might think. False teeth and artificial limbs have long been used and ⓓblood transfusions are absolutely necessary in many operations. Of course, artificial limbs have come a long way since the wooden peg for a leg and metal hook for a hand in days of pirate yore. You can even be a ( ⓔ ) to yourself by employing a skin graft from one body area to another that has been damaged. _____________________________________________________________________________________

Medical science continues to improve, but in many cases ⓐit is not the medical science itself, but the lack of suitable donors that creates problems for organ transplants. ⓑMany people do not register as a donor for religious reasons, but others do not because of simple negligence. It is not easy to contemplate one’s own death, but as one ad campaign has ⓒput it, organ donation is not about death, but ( ⓓ ) saving people’s lives. When it is put that way, registering to be an organ donor is an opportunity ⓔto help others and ⓕshould be celebrated rather than something that should be avoided. Are you a registered organ donor? ⓖIf not, consider that one of your organs might save the life of a loved one someday. _____________________________________________________________________________________ 1. ⓐ 문장에서 강조되는 부분을 영어로 쓰시오. * it is X that ~에서 강조되는 부분은 X이다.
