1. STX Heavy Industries Co. will sign an agreement this week to install 25 power plants to generate 2,500 megawatts in Iraq, Deputy Prime Minister Hussain Al-Shahristani told Iraqiya television.
The diesel-fired plants will start feeding power into Iraq’s electricity grid within five months, he said today.
The units are half of the 50 new 100-megawatt power plants planned by the Iraqi government at a cost of $6.25 billion. A group of Korean companies won the contract for the first 25 power plants on April 7.
Iraq faces electricity shortages eight years after the U.S.-led invasion that ousted President Saddam Hussein and its generation and distribution network have suffered from decades of conflict, sanctions and sabotage. The country sought bids this year to build more than 60 power plants.
Iraq produces 7,000 megawatts and imports 1,000 megawatts while domestic demand totals about 14,000 megawatts, Electricity Minister Raad Shallal said last month.
2. STX Europe bounces back from poor 2009
2010 proved to be another challenging year for STX’s European operations, with shipbuilding orders across Europe continuing to decline.
Despite this, STX Europe delivered significantly improved results in 2010 compared to 2009. The Offshore and Specialised Vessels area delivered strong results for 2010, while the Cruise and Ferries division is still showing weak results. Activity level at the yards was high and the operational performance was good with the successful delivery of 25 vessels during 2010.
EBITDA for 2010 came to NOK912 million (US$173 million) compared with NOK133 million in 2009. Profit before tax was NOK241 million compared with NOK875 million.
Order intake improved dramatically to NOK26,833 million for 2010 compared to NOK8,219 million in 2009. 25 vessels were successfully delivered in 2010, and the order backlog at the end of December 2010 stood at 59 vessels worth NOK31,160 million.
