Christ: The High Priest
[ Hebrews 5:1 - 5:10 ]
The Perfect Priest
1. Every high priest is selected from among men and is appointed to represent them in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
2. He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness.
3. This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.
4. No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God, just as Aaron was.
5. So Christ also did not take upon himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.”
6. And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”
Savior, Mediator and Son of God
7. During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.
8. Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered
9. and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him
10. and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
Reflection
The Perfect Priest (5:1-6)
The passage explains to us the Old Testament system of priests and sacrifices and why they were implemented by God. The priest was selected by God to represent His people in “matters related to God.” These “matters” include our relationship with Him. The priest is gentle with those who go astray, which is all of us. But the human priest is also subject to sin and weakness and therefore, he had to offer sacrifices for himself. But Jesus Christ is not like that; He is not just human. He is God Incarnate and He did not come to earth to take glory for Himself but to save us, and that meant finding a sacrifice that was worthy of God. A final and perfect sacrifice that would answer for all the sins of mankind. He is the sinless sacrifice and the perfect priest.
Savior, Mediator and Son of God (5:7-10)
Christ was and is the perfect priest and He was perfect in His obedience. In His sinlessness, He was able to be perfectly submissive to God’s will and thereby became the source of our salvation. While He lived and in His death and especially in His resurrection, Christ interceded for us so that we might all be saved. He is the Son of God, the eternal Mediator and our Savior. Nothing and no one could have taken the place of Christ. It could not have been any other person. God Himself had to become human and die for us because we could not save ourselves. A history of sacrifice, ritual, sinning, confessing, and returning to sin is over. The great Mediator has done it for good on the cross. His words, “It is done!” locked and sealed for us salvation.
Application
- The Old Covenant was based upon a law that demanded humans to be perfect. The system was perfect but we were not. Christ, the Perfect Priest, made it all right. Christ won for us everything that mattered. Let’s live every day basking in our prefect relationship with God.
- We struggle in this life and that’s the consequence of sin and our choices. However, we’re not bound to them. Let’s not live with regret of the past but assurance about the future.
A Letter to
God
Gracious God, You are everything to us. We are Your people and even when we sinners, You have loved us and saved us. You are the Perfect Priest and we are Your people. Draw us close to You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
