>> now, "inside edition," with deborah norville. Deborah: Hi, everybody, thanks for joining us. 'S one of the perils of celebrity, talkers. Actor will smith and his wife jada pinkett-smith say they're being talked by someone who knows virtually everything about their home life. Steve noble reports.
>> There was heavy security around will smith and wife jada pinkett and their children, at the "men in black ii" premiere in los angeles last months. The man in black had his own men in black protecting him. Will smith claims that just days before a former caretaker at his l.A. Estate began stalking his kids, jaden 4, and willow 2. Will and jada have applied for a restraining order against 66-year-old mike cooley of thousand oaks, california. Cooley worked as a caretaker and his wife was a nanny for the smiths for several years. According to court papers, the couple was fired several months ago. Four weeks ago they allegedly began -- the former caretaker -- just last week, according to court papers, the children were playing in a park here near their home when cooley arrived in his truck and allegedly tried to speak to jaden. A bodyguard intervened. Mike cooley told us off camera he had been working nearby when he saw the kids and wanted to say hello. He says he's hurt by the allegations. Will and jada, seen here with his parents, willard and caroline, are very close and protective of their children. They abruptly left the oscars because willow had an ear infection. Now they fear this new cries sis much more serious. Deborah: Will smith is right now in europe promoting the hit movie, "men in black ii." Julia roberts managed to keep her wedding top secret, but the inside story is coming out. Les trent with details of the wedding of the year.
>> What you didn't know about julia roberts' wed something revealed in the knew "people" magazine on stands friday. Guests were flown to their ranch, thinking they were attending a barbecue. When did they realize julia was tying the knot with cameraman danny moder?
>> About midnight on the fourth of july, she and danny walked out, danny got down on one knee and said "julia, in front of all the people we love, will you marry me?"
>> It was a quick ceremony, 20 minutes, with a lot of passion.
>> They were kissing through most of the ceremony. It was performed by a friend of theirs. They wrote their own vows.
>> The reception was totally informal.
>> Julia brought out a c.D. Player to play sade, bob marlie, and people were dancing, drinking champagne.
>> Can you imagine julia roberts pulling up weeds on her ranch? That's what she did, and the day before, as guests played on her grounds, she cooked them a turkey lunch. The official wedding picture was taken by this man, celebrity photographer sante d'orazio, a close friend of roberts. In the movies she's worn the traditional wedding gown. In real life, she kept it simple. The dress covered up another secret -- julia and danny both had each other's initials tattooed on their lower backs, declaring their love.
>> Now on to reality television. Critics are calling anna nicole smith's new tv show everything from a train wreck to a joke she's not in on. What's anna nicole say? Stacey gualandi tracked her down.
>> You're going to see everything, except when i go to the bathroom.
>> That's one bit of reality we don't want to see. Anna nicole smith is following in the footsteps of "the osbournes" and is letting cameras follow her every move for the weekly "anna nicole smith show" on e! And judging by her track record.
>> Kind of like a snake, it hises.
>> It could be pretty entertaining.
>> I'm not fat. This is just -- there's been a lot of crazy and embarrassing moments that i stuck my foot in my mouth.
>> Right above her foot, a risque tattoo. Can you show me your tattoos?
>> Yeah. This is god -- i mean mother mary, and this is the lord, and this is the holy bible, with a dagger in it.
>> You're on the back here, right? Anna's show also stars her 16-year-old son daniel. But does "tv guide's" mark schweg think it's worth watching?
>> It will be like a train wreck.
>> Do you worry about the critics?
>> They always criticize me. I'm so used to it. It's just like this. Next.
>> Anna nicole's not the only star willing to live life on tv. Liza, p-diddy, even pamela anderson are talking about taking the plunge. But the always larger-than-life anna nicole is ready for the competition.
>> Sure, let's party. Deborah: Anna nicole's show debuts sunday, august 4. One other reality tv note, "the osbournes'" mom sharon is in good spirits after surgery for colon cancer. She is expected to make a full recovery. Their dad may be president, but the bush twins, jenna and barbara, have been out of the limelight, having put a few embarrassing scrapes behind them. So what are the first twins doing this summer? Les trent tells us.
>> How's the summer shaping up for the president's 20-year-old daughters? By labor day, they'll probably be bushed.
>> The bush twins are definitely going to have a busy summer.
>> Marc malkin is a contributing editor at "new york" magazine.
>> I think there is some controversy about the twins. They're young girls, they're having fun.
>> Part of the fun is avoiding photographers. As jenna bush did by ducking behind these garment bags while boarding marine one on the way to her dad's 56th birthday. Then jenna went fishing with dad and bagged this whopper. She has even bigger fish to fry this summer.
>> Jenna bush is taking a trip to prague, which she visited earlier in the year with her mom.
>> As for her sister barbara, she'll be taking a bite out of the big apple.
>> Barbara is excited about hitting new york and the fashion scene.
>> She will reportedly work as an intern for designer lela rose, who created the outfit she and jenna wore to their dad's inauguration.
>> I wouldn't be surprised if barbara went into designing.
>> Fashion runs in the family. Cousin laura bush is a top fashion model. According to some, the bush twins don't always exhibit model behavior. According to "the washington post," the underage twins were spotted just last month at this D.C. Watering hole downing drinks with friends. A fake i.D. Has landed jenna in court once, and barb ras was stopped trying to pass a phony I.D., As well. One sure thing, wherever the twins go this summer, the cameras won't be far behind.
>> People are interested in them. They want to see what they're going to do. Deborah: This fall, both girls will be sophomores in college. Barbara at yale, jenna at the university of texas.
>> Still to come -- after all the tension, the murder trial in the case of little danielle van dam is coming to a close. From the evidence on the jacket --
>> westerfield dropped off that jacket at the cleaners.
>> To allegations of wife-swapping --
>> you swapped?
>> Yes.
>> The latest on the case the whole country is watching. Then -- how easily could a kidnapper break into your home? Our expert shows you what intruders look for and what stops them cold. Plus -- america's brand-new junior miss. Her first time in the big city. Deborah: Fiber evidence linking danielle van dam and the vehicles own by david westerfield has been introduced as the trial of the san diego man accused of killing his 7-year-old neighbor continues. More now on the trial and the toll it's taking on everyone involved. Haunting images of 7-year-old danielle van dam serve as a constant reminder of an unspeakable crime. Now the man accused of kidnapping and killing this little girl is on trial in san diego, california. Court tv reporter beth karas.
>> This is one of the most difficult cases for me to sit through, because of what happened to this little girl. She was put to bed by her father and found 3 1/2 weeks later, her body pretty decan composed.
>> The search for diana gripped the naig in february with her parents, parents, damon and brenda, making heartwrenching pleas.
>> Please, please continue to get the word out about our little girl. Deborah: Even before the gruesome discovery of her body 30 miles away, police focused attention on the man now standing trial, david westerfield, a 50-year-old neighbor of the van dams in upscale sabre springs.
>> There was no notice in his background that this man, a design engineer who holds three patents, twice divorced, grown children, that he would do something like this. Deborah: But prosecution evidence has shown a hidden side of david westerfield, a man prosecutors say was obsessed with child pornography. When computer images recovered from his home were played in court, some members of the jury were brought to tears.
>> There were two women who cried. It was very painful, because the video clips appeared to be a rape of a girl who looked to be 13 or 14 years old. Deborah: Westerfield's defense team has presented evidence that other people used his home computer and the child pornography files might have been accessed by his 18-year-old son.
>> It is the case that it's impossible to tell merely on the basis of the name on the C.D. Who the creator of the C.D. Is.
>> That's correct. Deborah: At times it looks like the van dams themselves are on trial for their swinging lifestyle. Flight attendant denise kemal was questioned about the time she and her ex-husband shared with the van dams.
>> So you never engaged in sexual relations with damon and brenda van dam?
>> Yes, i did, but with damon. It was more of a swap. And it was with brenda, and i was with damon.
>> Ok. I'm sorry. You swapped?
>> Yes. Deborah: But some believe the prosecution's strongest evidence is scientific, include hair, fine, and blood collected from westerfield.
>> Probably the most critical piece of evidence is her blood on his jacket. And westerfield dropped off that jacket at the cleaner's on the monday morning after she went missing. Deborah: Steve cron is a los angeles criminal defense attorney who's been following the case.
>> All of the blood, the hair, the fiber samples, none of them alone have been convincing. But when you put them all together, it seems like a pretty tough case against mr. Westerfield. Deborah: Westerfield has shown little emotion. The van dams, in contrast, have been overcome with emotions at times. After testifying, they sat together in the back row of the courtroom every day, until judge william mudd, in a highly unusual move, banned damon van dam from the courthouse two weeks ago.
>> It's been reported that he did say -- ask a deputy sheriff about the route that westerfield took in being transported from a holding pen to the courtroom. And they were concerned about westerfield's safety. Deborah: And even though westerfield has to be presumed innocent, cron says his defense attorneys have a tough fight on their hands.
>> This is the worst. When you're tacking about a potential rape and, certainly, a murder of a young girl, rimmed out of her home, it's brutal. Horrible case to defend. Deborah: The trial could wrap up next week. Westerfield faces the death penalty if convicted.
>> Still to come -- with children being kidnapped from their own bedrooms, every family worries if they are safe from intruders. We'll tell you simple safety tips you can do to make your home a safe house. Plus -- a look inside the new "big brother" house. Aen we took america's new junior miss, amy kerr, on her first tour of the big am. Deborah: Coming up -- tips on how to keep your home safe. And today's "inside info" -- how many burglaries were there in the united states in the last reporting year?
>> Their two sons are in serious trouble because of what one did with spitballs. The family story. Deborah: Today's "inside info" -- how many burglaries were there in the last reporting year? It was over two million for the year 2000. And with the high-profile kid nappings of elizabeth smart and danielle van dam from their homes, americans everywhere are placing a new importance on home security. The home security system is useful, but an expensive alternative. But there are other steps you can take, as well. Steve noble reports.
>> With kids getting stolen out of their own homes, definitely made us aware of security.
>> Meet riggs and doreen murdoch. The proud L.A. Parents of adorable twin 4-year-olds, chloe and madeline. Cute kids, worried mom and dad. Concerned more than ever about their family's safety. Especially since 14-year-old elizabeth smart's abduction in utah.
>> Elizabeth is very sweet.
>> And 7-year-old danielle van dam's kidnapping in san diego.
>> I look and hope she's going to be there.
>> The concerns raise the question -- just how safe is your house from intruders, and how can you make it more secure?
>> In the best of neighborhoods, i think anything can happen.
>> To find out, we introduced the murdoch family to security expert jack streuble.
>> We're going to do a walk through the residence.
>> What jack showed us might protect your house from intruders.
>> There's a lot of things people can change.
>> First, the garage, an easy entry point to your house.
>> You want to make sure your garage door is locked and it stays lock locked. Once the door shuts, you want to make sure they can't reach down underneath here, where this is, and pull up on it.
>> A locking mechanism inside can prevent that. And make sure the doors from the garage to the house are sturdy and solid. And remember, exterior doors should always have a peephole. A high fence can also keep an intruder out.
>> What it does, it makes it tougher for someone to crawl over.
>> If you don't have a security system, fake it. A simple sign like this might convince a burglar to target a different home. And listen to this -- security experts often refer to the three l's. That's locks. Lighting. And landscape. Here's what they're talking, first, make sure to keep your door locked at all times. Second, use a timer like this to turn your lights on and off when you're not around. And third, keep your outside safe by focusing on the landscape. That means your shrubs and trees shouldn't block your view of your yard. Those obstructions can give an intruder a place to hide. Make sure the outside of your home is well lit, with entrances and pathways illuminated.
>> We suggest one here pointing out in this direction.
>> For the murdoches, the safety basics seemed doable.
>> It's easier than i thought it would be.
>> The best advice may be simple common sense.
>> Get to know who belongs in your neighborhood, who doesn't belong in your neighborhood, and if you do those things you'll make yourself a lot safer. Deborah: A lot of information in that report. If you'd like to review those tips, go to our web site, insideedition.Com. Next, the new junior miss and a preview of the "big brother" debut. bright like a rainbow Deborah: So which actress is "the road to perdition" director, sam mendes, dating?
>> It's a beautiful film.

And "big brother" debuts tonight with a new house. Here's today's "celebrity round-up." Which contest winner popped up in new york city? 18-year-old amy kerr, who just became america's junior miss 2002. I was there as co-host of the 45th annual competition when amy won. The organization's close to my heart because, yep, i too was a winner, georgia's junior miss, 1976. We caught one amy, who's from salem, oregon as she toured new york city for the very first time. She made sure to hit all the great stores and see all the important sights, like the empire state building. And then we joined another tour, this time it's a sneak peek of the newly redecorated "big brother" house.
>> It becomes a personal prison.
>> Allison grodner is the executive producer. There are new homey touches, like this fireplace, but the game's the same for the 12 contestants -- nasty. Who are they? Meet 35-year-old tonya paoni a divorced mother of five from las vegas.
>> I'm pretty open to anything. I want to win that money. Deborah: Then there's 37-year-old laurie olson, from foxboro, wisconsin.
