생애
그림
고갱의 생애는 파란만장하다. 아버지는 자유주의자로서 망명하여 남미 리마로 가던 도중에 죽고, 그 후 고갱은 7세 때에 프랑스에 돌아온다. 바다를 동경하여 선원이 되어 남미도 항해하지만, 결국 포기하고 그만두고 화가로서 새출발을 한다.
퐁 타벵
그러나 회화는 생활에 아무런 도움을 주지 못하고 돈은 다 떨어져서 아내의 고향인 덴마크로 가는데 덴마크에서 발표한 일도 실패, 고갱은 처자를 남겨두고 단 하나의 어린아이를 데리고 파리에 나타났다. 그러나 생활은 궁핍하여 포스터를 붙이는 노동도 했다. 그리고 1886년부터 브르타뉴의 퐁 타뱅으로 가서 젊은 화가들과 만나, 인상파의 그림에 만족하지 않고, 독자적인 화풍을 창시, 평면적인 채색으로 장식적인 그림을 그리면서, 그의 화풍을 따르는 젊은 화가들과 '퐁 타벵(Pont-Aven) 파'를 창립하였다. 파리로 돌아가서는 고흐를 만났다.
순수함을 찾다
그러나 고갱에게는 순수함에 대한 정열이 있었다. 문명의 거짓을 좋아하지 않았다. 거짓이 없는 순수함 속에는 꿈이 있다. 거기에는 시(詩)가 살아 있다. 고갱은 1887년 봄에 남미로 건너가고, 다시 마르티니크 섬으로 가지만 병으로 인한 고뇌로 귀국한다. 그리하여 이듬해 퐁 타뱅으로 다시 가 거기에서 젊은 화가들과 만나 새로운 회화의 이론을 주장한다. 이어 고흐의 초대로 아를르에도 가지만 그 우정은 깨져 버려, 재차 순수함을 그리워한다. 그 염원을 달성한 것은 1891년으로, 고갱은 태평양의 타히티 섬 민중들의 순수한 삶과 개성에 감동하여 수많은 작품을 그려 낸다. 고갱은 한번 파리에 돌아오지만, 1895년에는 타히티에 돌아간다. 그러나 그림 제작하는 것 외에는 궁핍과 병과 싸우는 생활이고, 1901년에는 도미니카 섬으로 옮겨 가서 고독한 생애를 마친다.
그림의 개성
그는 세잔·고흐 등과 함께 후기 인상파의 한 사람인데, 세잔은 객관적 또는 공간적인 것을, 고흐는 주관적인 것을 제재로 하였으나, 고갱은 장식적인 것의 부활을 주로 하였다. 그의 강렬하고도 새로운 장식풍의 그림은 후세 그림에 많은 영향을 끼쳤다.

강렬하면서도 원시적인 그림들.
'고흐, 영혼의 문'이라는 영화를 무슨 프로그램에서 몇 장면 봤는데
둘이 친했지만 결국은 멘탈이 강한 고갱은 성공적이 삶을 살고
예민하고 심약한 고흐는 고갱의 비난 때문에 자신의 귀를 자르고...
문득 이 그림들을 보고 있으니 두 화가의 에너지가
서로의 운명을 가른 건 아닌가
느껴집니다.
