복음의 빚진 자, 한 영혼을 구원하라(로마서 1장 14절~15절)

Debtor to the Gospel: Save One Soul(Romans 1:14-15)

“헬라인이나 야만인이나 지혜 있는 자나 어리석은 자에게 다 내가 빚진 자라 그러므로 나는 할 수 있는 대로 로마에 있는 너희에게도 복음 전하기를 원하노라”

14 I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome. 

거저 받은 구원, 순교의 피 값 위에 세워진 교회

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 그리고 한국과 미국에서 복음의 열정을 품고 이 자리에 오신 의료 선교팀 여러분, 오늘 우리는 하나님의 크신 은혜 가운데 이 자리에 모였습니다. 우리는 지금 자유롭게 예배하고, 찬양하며, 하나님을 '아버지'라 부르고 있습니다. 그러나 이것은 결코 우연이 아닙니다.

Salvation Received Freely A Church Built upon the Price of the Martyr's Blood

Beloved fellow believers and members of the medical mission team who have come here from Korea and the United States with a passion for the Gospel—we are gathered here today by the abundant grace of God. We are now free to worship to praise and to call God "Father." Yet this is by no means a coincidence.

오늘날 우리가 누리는 이 구원의 기쁨 뒤에는, 우리를 향해 생명을 아끼지 않았던 믿음의 선배들과 선교사님들의 핏값과 눈물이 심겨 있습니다.

Behind the joy of salvation we enjoy today lie the tears and the price of blood paid by the missionaries and seniors of faith who did not spare their lives for our sake.

약 140여 년 전, 한국(조선)이라는 나라는 영적으로 캄캄한 어둠과 소망이 없는 땅이었습니다. 그 어두운 땅에 복음의 빛을 들고 찾아온 젊은 선교사들이 있었습니다. 20대의 젊은 나이에 이 땅에 와서 복음을 전하다가 몇 달 만에 전염병으로 숨진 선교사, 사랑하는 자녀와 아내를 이 땅에 묻으면서도 복음을 포기하지 않았던 선교사들이 있었습니다.

About 140 years ago, Korea (Chosun) was a land in spiritual darkness and without hope. Yet, young missionaries arrived in that dark land, bringing the light of the Gospel. There were those who came in their twenties and, while preaching the Gospel, lost their lives to infectious diseases within a few months; there were others who, even as they buried their beloved wives and children in this soil, refused to give up on the Gospel.

그중 텍사스 출신의 25세 젊은 여선교사, 루비 켄드릭(Ruby Kendrick)의 마지막 편지를 소개해 드립니다. 그녀는 급성 맹장염으로 순교하기 직전, 고향의 부모님께 이런 편지를 남겼습니다.

Among them, I would like to share the final letter of Ruby Kendrick, a young 25-year-old female missionary from Texas. Shortly before she died from acute appendicitis, she wrote this letter to her parents back home.

"아버지, 어머니! 어쩌면 이 편지가 마지막일 수도 있습니다. 제가 이곳에 오기 전 뒤뜰에 심었던 한 알의 씨앗이 내년이면 온 동네를 꽃으로 가득 채우겠지요? 그리고 또 다른 씨앗을 만들어 조선 땅에는 많은 꽃들이 피고, 그들도 여러 나라에서 또 다른 씨앗이 될 것입니다. 저는 이 땅에 저의 심장을 묻겠습니다. 이것은 저의 열정이 아니라, 하나님께서 조선을 향해 가지신 열정입니다."

"Father, Mother! This letter may be my last. The single seed I planted in the backyard before coming here will surely fill the entire village with flowers by next year, won't it? And those flowers will produce more seeds—causing flowers to spread across the land of Chosun and eventually becoming seeds for other nations as well. I will lay my heart to rest in this soil. This is not merely my own passion, but the passion God holds for Chosun."

그리고 그녀는 텍사스의 청년들을 향해 마지막 유언을 남겼습니다.

“만약 내게 천 개의 생명이 있다면, 그 모두를 조선에 주겠다. 만일 내가 죽으면 텍사스 청년들에게 가서 열 명씩, 스무 명씩, 오십 명씩 조선으로 오라고 일러주십시오.”

And she left a final message for the young people of Texas:

“If I had a thousand lives, I would give them all to Chosun. If I die, please go to the young people of Texas and tell them to come to Chosun—in groups of ten, twenty, and fifty.”

이 한마디에 감동한 20명의 젊은이가 곧바로 한국 선교사로 헌신했습니다. 이분들이 흘린 순교의 피와 눈물이 밀알이 되어 썩어졌기에, 오늘날 한국 교회는 세계가 주목하는 영적 부흥을 이룰 수 있었습니다.

Moved by these words, twenty young people immediately dedicated themselves as missionaries to Korea. Because the sacrificial blood and tears they shed fell to the ground and died like a grain of wheat, the Korean church today has been able to achieve a spiritual revival that receives global attention.

한국 교회는 그 엄청난 복음의 빚 위에 세워졌습니다. 그리고 이제 한국 교회는 그 빚을 갚기 위해 전 세계로 선교사를 파송하고 있으며, 전 세계에서 필리핀에 가장 많은 선교사를 파송하여 복음의 물줄기를 이어가고 있습니다.

The Korean church was built upon a huge debt of the Gospel. Now, to repay that debt, it is sending missionaries across the globe—with the Philippines receiving the largest number—thereby continuing the flow of the Gospel.

오늘 이 자리에 계신 의료 선교팀 14명 역시 마찬가지입니다. 한국에서, 미국에서 생업을 중단하고 이 자리에 오신 이유는 단 하나입니다. 바로 이 '복음의 빚진 마음'으로, 필리핀의 '한 영혼을 구원하기 위해서'입니다.

The same holds true for the 14 members of the medical mission team present here today. There is only one reason why they have put their responsibilities in Korea and the United States on hold to come here: it is to save "a single soul" in the Philippines due to the "sense of indebtedness to the Gospel"

1. 우리는 모두 '복음의 빚진 자'입니다

오늘 본문에서 사도 바울은 위대한 고백을 합니다.

“나는 빚진 자라” (롬 1:14)

We are all "debtors to the Gospel."

In today's passage, the Apostle Paul makes a great confession.

 I am obligated(Romans 1:14)

바울은 사람들에게 돈을 빌린 적이 없습니다. 물질적인 빚을 진 것이 아닙니다. 그러나 그는 평생을 '빚쟁이'의 마음으로 살았습니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 예수 그리스도에게 받은 구원의 은혜와 십자가의 사랑이 너무나 크고 압도적이었기 때문입니다. 나 같은 죄인을 살리시려 십자가에서 피 흘리신 그 사랑을 생각할 때, 이 복음을 아직 모르는 이웃들에게 전하지 않고는 견딜 수가 없었던 것입니다.

Paul never borrowed money from anyone; he had no material debts. Yet, he lived his entire life with the heart of a "debtor." Why? It was because the grace of salvation and the love of the Cross he received from Jesus Christ were very big and overwhelming. When he thought about the love that led to the shedding of blood on the Cross to save a sinner like himself, he could not bear the thought of not sharing this Gospel with his neighbors who did not know it yet.

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 선교사님들의 피 값으로 복음을 이어받은 우리 역시 '복음의 빚진 자'들입니다. 빚을 진 사람은 다리를 뻗고 편히 잘 수 없습니다. 늘 빚을 갚아야 한다는 거룩한 부담감이 있습니다. 오늘 이 자리에 모인 우리 모두의 마음에, 죽어가는 영혼들을 향한 거룩한 영적 부담감이 일어나기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Beloved fellow believers, having received the Gospel through the sacrificial blood of missionaries, we too are "debtors to the Gospel." One who is in debt cannot sleep well; there is always a holy burden to repay that debt. I pray in the name of the Lord that a holy spiritual burden for dying souls will form in the hearts of all of us gathered here today.

2. 한 영혼의 가치는 '천하'보다 귀합니다

예수님께서는 마태복음 16장 26절에서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.

The value of a single soul is greater than the whole world.

Jesus spoke these words in Matthew 16:26.

“사람이 만일 온 천하를 얻고도 제 목숨을 잃으면 무엇이 유익하리요 사람이 무엇을 주고 제 목숨과 바꾸겠느냐”

26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 

하나님의 계산법은 세상의 계산법과 완전히 다릅니다. 세상은 숫자를 보고, 크기를 보고, 효율을 따집니다. 그러나 우리 주님은 '한 사람'을 온 천하보다 귀하게 보십니다.

God’s way of calculation is completely different from the world’s. The world looks at numbers and size, and prioritizes efficiency. Yet, our Lord regards "one person" as more precious than the whole world.

주님은 아흔아홉 마리의 양을 안전한 우리에 두고, 길 잃은 '한 마리'의 양을 찾아 거친 들판과 가시밭길을 헤매시는 분이십니다. 잃어버린 드라크마 동전 하나를 찾기 위해 등불을 켜고 온 집안을 쓸며, 찾아내기까지 포기하지 않는 분이십니다.

The Lord is the One who leaves the ninety-nine sheep in the safety of the pen and wanders through rough fields and thorny paths to find the 'one' lost sheep. He is the One who lights a lamp and sweeps the entire house to find a single lost drachma coin, never giving up until He finds it.

그동안 수많은 선교사님과 교회가 필리핀 땅에 재정을 흘려보내고, 교회를 건축하고, 학교를 세운 이유가 무엇이겠습니까? 바로 이 ‘한 영혼의 가치’를 알기 때문입니다. 우리 눈에는 그저 길거리에 지나가는 수많은 사람 중 한 명일지 모르지만, 하나님의 눈에는 당신의 독생자 예수 그리스도의 목숨과 맞바꾼 절대적인 가치입니다. 그 한 영혼을 구원하는 일에 동참하는 것보다 이 땅에서 더 가치 있는 일은 없습니다.

Why have so many missionaries and churches poured financial resources into the Philippines, built churches, and established schools? It is precisely because they recognize the "value of a single soul." To our eyes, that person might appear to be just one of the many passersby on the street, but in the eyes of God, they possess an absolute value—a value for which He exchanged the life of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. There is nothing on this earth more valuable than participating in the work of saving that single soul.

예수를 믿습니까? 예수님이 여러분의 구원자이십니까?

3. 기도로 무릎 꿇고, 발로 나아갑시다

그렇다면 복음의 빚진 자 된 우리는 어떻게 이 거룩한 도전에 응답해야 하겠습니까?

Let us kneel in prayer and step forward.

How, then, should we—who are indebted to the Gospel—respond to this holy challenge?

첫째, 눈물의 기도가 있어야 합니다.

영혼 구원은 인간의 말재주나 지혜로 되지 않습니다. 오직 성령의 역사로만 가능합니다. 우리가 먼저 구원해야 할 영혼들의 이름을 가슴에 품고, 눈물로 기도의 씨앗을 뿌려야 합니다.

First, there must be prayer with tears.

The salvation of souls is not achieved through human eloquence or wisdom; it is possible only through the work of the Holy Spirit. We must first hold the names of the souls to be saved close to our hearts and sow the seeds of prayer with tears.

둘째, 주저하지 말고 입을 열어 전해야 합니다.

바울은 *“할 수 있는 대로 너희에게도 복음 전하기를 원하노라”*고 했습니다. 완벽한 때를 기다리지 마십시오. 내 처지와 상황을 핑계 대지 마십시오. '할 수 있는 대로', 지금 내 곁에 있는 가족에게, 이웃에게, 동료에게 예수 그리스도의 사랑을 흘려보내야 합니다. 때를 얻든지 못 얻든지 생명의 말씀을 던져야 합니다.

Second, do not hesitate to speak up and share the message.

Paul said, “That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you” Do not wait for the perfect moment. Do not make excuses based on your circumstances or situation. "As much as you are able," you must share the love of Jesus Christ with the family, neighbors, and colleagues right beside you. Whether you get the opportunity or not, you must proclaim the word of life.

2026년 새해 첫날, 그전부터 전도해야 된다라는 거룩한 부담이 있었습니다. 물론 부분적인 전도는 하지만 시간을 정해놓고 꾸준하게 하는 것은 쉽지 않았습니다.

그러나 올해는 그냥 넘어가지 않기를 작정을 했습니다.

우리 교회에 속한 다나이, 두마게티, 다나이, 씨앗톤 반블로나 교회들 중에 가장 약한 교회인 씨앗톤 교회에 매주 토요일 날 전도하기로 작정을 하고 그 일을 시작을 했습니다.

1월 2일 학생들을 모아서 전도 훈련을 시켰습니다.

그리고 곧바로 전도하러 나갔습니다. 지금 이제 6월 7월이 되었습니다. 매주 토요일 젊은 씨아톤 교회 청년들이 또 학생들이 대학 학생들이 매주 토요일 1명, 2명, 4명, 많게는 9명까지 전도하러 나옵니다.

제가 한국에 갔을 때는 간식 값을 주고 제가 한국으로 떠났습니다.

싸앗톤에 못 간 지가 한 달이 넘었습니다. 그러나 그들은 매주 토요일 정한 시간에 나와서 계속적으로 전도하고 있습니다.

지난 6월 달에 청소년들을 교회에 초청해서 30명의 젊은 아이들이 교회에 나왔습니다.

우리가 안 해서 전도하지 않아서 열매가 없을 뿐입니다.

명령에 순종하면 예수님께서 오늘 우리 정 박사님께서 말씀 주신 마태복음 28장 18절에서 20절 말씀에 순종하면 열매가 있습니다.

한번 여러분 주위를 한번 들어보십시오. 여러분의 가족들은 모두 다 예수 그리스도를 믿습니까?

여러분의 사랑하는 친구들은 예수를 믿습니까?

여러분의 이웃들은 모두 다 예수를 믿습니까?

모든 사람들에게는 두 길이 있습니다. 예수를 믿으면 천국이요 믿지 않으면 영원한 지옥입니다.

여러분 여러분은 예수님을 믿습니까?

예수를 믿습니까? 여러분 문제가 되지 않습니다.

그러나 여러분의 가족들, 믿지 않는 가족들,

여러분의 친구들 예수를 믿지 않는다라면 미안하지만 영원한 지옥입니다.

구원을 받을 수 있는 유일한 기회는 살아있을 때입니다.

죽으면 끝입니다. 여러분, 주님은 분명 우리에게 말씀하십니다. 모든 민족으로 제자를 삼으라고

여러분이 만약 전도하지 않으면 열매는 없습니다. 전도하지 않으면 영혼은 주님 앞에 돌아오지.

그리고 우리는 빚진 자입니다. 우리는 복음의 빚진 자입니다. 우리가 죽어도 갚을 수 없는 빚을 진 사람들입니다.

복음의 물줄기를 이어가는 통로가 됩시다

말씀을 맺겠습니다.

오늘 우리가 누리는 복음은 거저 주어진 것이 아닙니다. 눈물과 땀, 그리고 순교의 피 대가로 우리에게 흘러들어온 생명수입니다. 이제 이 생명수의 물줄기가 우리 대에서 멈추어서는 안 됩니다.

Let us become the channels that carry on the stream of the Gospel.

I will now conclude.

The Gospel we enjoy today was not given freely; it is the water of life that has flowed to us at the cost of tears, sweat, and the blood of martyrs. Now, the flow of this water of life must not stop with our generation.

교회의 본질은 건물을 크게 키우는 데 있지 않습니다. 교회의 진짜 능력은 죽어가는 영혼들을 건져 올리는 ‘구원선’의 역할을 감당할 때 나타납니다. 과거 선교사님들이 피와 눈물로 썼던 그 사도행전의 역사를, 이제는 오늘을 살아가는 저와 여러분이 우리의 땀과 눈물과 순종으로 이어 써 내려가야 합니다.

The essence of the church does not lie in expanding the size of its buildings. The true power of the church is revealed when it fulfills its role as a "rescue ship," saving dying souls. We—living in the present—must now continue the history of the Acts, which missionaries of the past wrote with their blood and tears, by writing the next chapter with our own sweat, tears, and obedience.

오늘 이 시간, 우리 모두가 하나님 앞에 이렇게 고백하기를 소망합니다.

“온 천하보다 귀중한 한 영혼이 나를 통해 주님께 돌아올 수만 있다면, 나의 시간과 물질과 삶을 기꺼이 드리겠습니다.”

At this moment, I hope we all make this confession before God:

“If even one soul, that is more precious than the whole world, can return to the Lord through me, I will gladly offer my time, my resources, and my life.”

이 거룩한 결단과 고백이 오늘 함께 예배하는 필리핀 성도님들과 단기 선교팀 모두의 고백이 되기를 주님의 이름으로 간절히 축원합니다. 아멘.

I earnestly pray in the name of the Lord that this holy decision and confession may become the confession of both the Filipino believers and the mission team worshipping together today. Amen.
