클로드 최는 10세부터 작곡과 연주를 시작했고, 유럽에서 수학하며 3번의 국제음악대회에서 작곡상을 수상했다. 현재는 캐나다 캘거리에서 작곡가 겸 지휘자, 프로듀서로 활동하고 있다.
2010 G-20공연 예술감독 겸 지휘자로 세종문화회관에서 공연하였고 2003 워싱톤 D.C 미국회의사당 상원홀 에서 미주 100주년 콘서트를 지휘하였다. 1994년 170년 전통의 러시아의 레닌그라드 필하모니 오케스트라를 처음으로 지휘한 동양인으로 화제가 되었으며, 2002년 캐나다열린 Asia Heritage콘서트의 한국대표로 지휘하였다. 2001년 카네기홀 데뷔 이후 런던 심포니 오케스트라를 비롯한 세계 유수의 오케스트라와 연주 및 레코딩 작업을 하였다. 클래식부터 팝, TV드라마, 크로스오버 등 다양한 장르를 아우른다

Claude Choe Profile

An award-winning composer, conductor, and producer Claude Choe has captivated his audience worldwide with his beautiful, moving melodies for over two decades. The winner of 2003 Canada-Korea Cultural Artist of the Year Award Claude Choe is well-known for introducing the classical easy listening genre to South Korea in movie and television drama soundtracks, notably ‘Love is Just a Dream’ and ‘As I leave,’ sung by the world-renowned soprano Sumi Jo. As a classical guitarist, Claude is active in performances across North America, Europe, and Asia, with numerous sound recordings.

In November 2010, Claude Choe directed the ceremonial concerts of the G-20 Seoul Summit as an orchestra conductor and the artistic director in Seoul, Korea.

In 2003, Claude Choe was selected as the music director of the 100^th Year Korea-America Immigration Anniversary celebration in USA, which led to the monumental first musical concert ever held inside the Capitol, Washington DC, with the Washington Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. In 2002, Claude participated in the opening ceremony of the World Cup 2002 Korea-Japan as a music director. In 2009, the Rotary International awarded Claude Choe with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow medal for his contribution to cultural and artistic exchanges around the world.

Romantic and Beautiful Melodies

Critics and professional musicians take note of Claude’s unique musical style–poetic and nostalgic, crossing all spectrums of music, a fusion of sentimental Oriental melodies with romantic Western European classics, with a touch of Latin passion and soulful Jazz. Praising his music for its “poetic and romantic color,” the Centre Culture Francais calls his music “freeing and relaxing,” and the London Voice and Royal Opera House “splendid and extraordinarily beautiful.”

Composer

Claude Choe first began receiving international attention and recognition at the Salerno International Film Festival in Italy in 1993, when his ‘Une Poignee de Temps’ won the Best Film Music Award among 200 international nominees from 120 countries.

Choe’s own compositions are perhaps best-known in movie and television drama soundtracks, including the main theme music for Korean top dramas “Hotelier,” “Famous Seven Princesses,” “Guardian Angel,” and “Land of human.”

Claude Choe’s own composition albums include the SONY & BMG recording “Romantic Dreams” which was recorded in 2007 with the London Symphony Orchestra and London Voices, “Millennium Romance” with Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, “Sentimental Scenery” and “5 Colors of French Mood” with French Pop Orchestra and “In Love with Romantic Guitar.” These albums feature collections of his most beloved compositions from the past two decades.

Conductor

As an accomplished conductor, Claude Choe has been working with many of the world’s best orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra of England, St. Luke Symphony of New York, Washington Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic and Festival Symphony of Canada & USA. Notably, Claude Choe was the first Asian to conduct the legendary Russia’s Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in 1994. Choe conducted these world-renowned orchestras in numerous concerts and sound recordings in world-class concert halls and studios, such as New York’s Carnegie Hall and London’s Abbey Road Studio, and Toronto’s Massey Hall and Russia’s St. Petersburg Hall.

In Canada, Claude Choe worked as the artistic director/producer of the concert “We Are Together” at the Calgary Jack Singer Concert Hall in celebration of the 40^th anniversary of Canada-Korea relations. Under the direction of Choe, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra along with the Festival Chorus of 120 singers, as well as a number of well-known artists from both countries, put on what is later praised by the public as “one of the most successful cultural exchanges of the two countries.”

Producer

Aside from his own albums, Claude has been working actively as a producer of cross-over albums for both popular and classical music singers. From 2000 to 2002, Choe produced the world-class soprano Sumi Jo’s sound recording ‘Love is Just a Dream’, originally written and conducted by Choe himself with Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, then recorded again in Rome, Italy in cooperation with the sound engineer Simon Rocinee (producer and sound engineer of Louciano Pavarotti’s recordings). The song ‘Love is Just a Dream’ became Choe’s hallmark in South Korea and it continues to be a favourite of many. In 2001, Choe directed and produced the song ‘As I Leave,(나가거든)’ for the popular television drama “The Empire of the Lost” (명성황후), which later broke the record as the most-sold television drama soundtracks in Korea. Then again in 2002, Sumi Jo’s new albums “With Love” and “My Story” broke the records as the fastest most sold sound recording in Korea’s classical music recordings’ history.

Other singers with whom Claude Choe worked as a producer are Stefanie Rose, Tae Kyung Lim, Korea’s popular cross-over tenor, Young-Ok Shin and Moon-Hee Shin, Metropolitan soprano divas, Mira Lee, a musical theatre actress, and Bum-Soo Kim, a Billboard chart artist.

Musical Director

As a musical director, Claude Choe actively promotes cultural arts exchanges between Korea and North America. Choe currently serves as the director of Korea-America Cultural Arts Foundation and Korea-Canada Cultural Arts Foundation. Recently, he was appointed the musical director of an upcoming New Exposition Hall opening ceremony at the Smithsonian Museum, Washington, DC, USA.

Classical Guitarist

Claude Choe is one of the most beloved classical guitarists in South Korea, and his virtuoso is well-known. His performances have been seen across the world in New York, Paris, Washington DC, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver, Spain, and many other cities. His very own five classical guitar recordings attest to his love for this instrument, with which Choe first pursued his interest in music.

Claude’s classical guitar performances have been seen in Alberta at the Alberta Centennial Celebration concerts in 2007 and the Rotary International Conference concert in 2009. Internationally, Choe recently performed at the opening musical concert for the exhibition of the world’s famous French photographers Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Serene Cho in seoul korea.

2003년 캐나다 한인문화예술대상을 수상하였고 2009년 국제 문화예술부문 기여로 인터내셔널 로터리클럽으로부터 PAUL HARRIS FELLOW 메달을 수여받았다. 그는 10대 초반부터 전문적인 음악수업을 시작하였으며, 발레리나였던 모친과 바이올리니스트이자 음악대학 교수였던 조부의 풍부한 음악적 재능과 환경에서 성장하였다. 클로드 최는 프랑스를 중심으로 유럽에서 시작된 Classical Easy listening음악을 한국에 널리 소개하여 많은 대중으로부터 주목 받기 시작하였다. 또한30여 년간 클래식기타 연주자로 활동하면서 작곡가와 연주자 및 프로듀서로서의 음악적 기반을 다져갔으며 연이은 여러 음반들을 출반 하였다.

영화 평론가와 음악 전문가들은 그의 음악이 프랑스적 색채와 시적 향수를 담고 있다고 평한다. 유럽의 여러 음악가들과 비교해 볼 때 클로드 최의 음악은 높은 경쟁력을 지니며 전통적인 한국음악에도 영향을 끼쳤다. 그의 음악은 시간을 초월한 클래식 음악과 유럽의 낭만적 색채, 그리고 동양적인 구슬픈 멜로디와 열정의 라틴음악 및 감미로운 재즈에 이르기까지 다양한 쟝르를 소화해내며 로맨틱한 무드와 호소력 짙은 세련된 기법을 사용하여 깊이 있는 음악적 즐거움과 감성을 이끌어내고 있다.

2003년 미주한인 이민100주년 행사의 음악감독 겸 작곡가로 “한.미 이민 100주년 기념공연과 앨범”을 제작하였고 같은 해 6월 미국의 수도 워싱톤 D.C 에있는 “미 국회 의사당 상원의원 홀” 에서 한인들의 미국 이민사100년 만에 처음으로 열렸던 역사적인100주년 기념 콘서트의 음악 감독 겸 지휘자로 양국 주요 아티스트들이 참여한가운데 Washington Symphony orchestra 와 Washington Chorus를 지휘하였다. 아울러 캐나다 캘거리에서 열린 한국 캐나다 수교 40주년 기념공연인 ‘We are Together’ 콘서트의 음악감독 겸 프로듀서로 120명의 Festival
Chorus와 양국 주요아티스트들 및 Calgary Symphony Orchestra를 지휘하여 성공적인 연주회를 가졌으며 이에 양국 정부 관계자와 청중들로부터 아낌없는 찬사를 받았다.

2000년 Canada Jack Singer Concert Hall 에서 클로드최 의 지휘로 Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra 가 연주한 “LOVE IS JUST A DREAM” 은 소프라노 조수미와 함께 이태리Rome에서 작곡가 겸 프로듀서로 레코딩하였고, 세계적인 테너 ‘루치아노 파바로티’ 의 프로듀서 겸 엔지니어였던 Simon Rocinee가 보칼 녹음을 맡아 연주와 노래, 영화와 TV 드라마를 통해 많은 이들의 사랑을 받는 클로드 최의 대표작이 되었다. 또한 그가 2001년 음악감독겸 프로듀서를 맡았던 인기TV 대하 드라마 명성황후의 주제가인 “나 가거든” 은 다시 한번 조수미가 노래하여 드라마 음반사상 최고의 판매를 기록한 베스트 앨범이 되었다.

영화음악 작곡가로서 그는 120개국이 참가한 이탈리아 Salerno 국제 영화제 출품작인

“Une Poignee De Temps” 의 음악을 맡아 200여 출품작중 최우수작품상을 수상하며 국제적인 명성을 얻게 되었으며 영화 “The Rhapsody” 의 작곡가 및 2009년에는 다큐멘타리 영화인 “The Empire of Lost”의 음악감독 겸 작곡가로 참여하였다. TV드라마 작곡가로서 클로드 최는 많은 인기를 얻었던 ‘호텔리어’ ‘소문난 칠공주’ ‘수호천사’ 등의 주제 음악들과 라디오 및 방송 시그널 뮤직 등을 작곡하였고 특히 `90년대 중반의 한국현대 역사 TV 대하 드라마 음악을 담당한 그는 당시로서는 드라마사상 최대의 제작비인(U.S500만불) 이 투자되어 해외6개국 로케이션 및 다국적 배우들이 출연한 작품의 작곡가로 선정되어 국내외적에 큰 이슈가 되기도 하였다.

지휘자로서 클로드 최는 94년 170년역사의 러시아 St. Petersburg Concert hall에서 Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra 를 처음으로 지휘한 동양인으로 화제가 되었으며, 2002년 캐나다에서 열린 Asia Heritage콘서트의 한국대표로 지휘하였다. 2001년 뉴욕Carnegie Hall 데뷔 연주를 비롯하여 Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony
Orchestra, St. Luke Symphony Orchestra, Washington Symphony Orchestra, Festival symphony orchestra, London Voices Royal Covent garden – Calgary Festival Chorus, Washington Chorus등을 지휘하였다. 그외 Canada Toronto Massey Hall, Calgary Jack Singer Concert Hall, New York Carnegie Hall, Russia Leningrad Concert Hall, The London Abbey Road Studio,서울 세종문회회관, KBS Hall등 세계적인 명성의 스튜디오와 콘서트홀에서 연주와 레코딩을 하였다.

클래식기타 연주자로서 미국플로리다, 워싱톤D.C,뉴욕, 파리, 스페인, 밴쿠버, 토론토, 에드먼튼, 캘거리 등 여러 도시들의 연주회를 비롯하여 2007년 캐나다 알버타 시티 100주년 공연,
2009년 서울시와 환경부가 주관한 호암 아트홀에서 열린 세계언론으로부터 ‘신의 시선’ 이라는 찬사를 받은 프랑스의 환경사진작가인 “얀 아르튀스-베르트랑”(Yann Arthus-Bertrand)과 람사르 총회 초청작가인 “세렌조”(Serene cho)와의 특별공동사진전에 초대되어 오프닝음악 연주회를 하였다. 그외 캐나다 팝페라 가수Stefanie Rose와 한국의 인기 크로스오버 테너 임태경의1집 데뷔앨범, 메트로폴리탄 디바 소프라노 신영옥, 팝페라 성악가 신문희, 뮤지컬 배우인 이미라, 그리고 미국 빌보드 챠트 가수인 김범수를 비롯하여 이선희, 김종환 등 여러 정상 성악가들과 대중음악인들의 작곡 및 프로듀서로도 일하고 있다.

창작 작곡음반으로서 SONY & BMG NUSIC이 발표한 영국 런던심포니오케스트라와 왕립합창단으로 구성된 London Voices의 연주로 출반된 “Romantic Dreams” 캐나다 캘거리 필하모닉

오케스트라 연주로 이루어진 “Millennium Romance” 한국 클래식 음반사상 최단 시간내 최고의 판매량을 보인 2002년 월드컵기념 음반인 ”My Story” 앨범과 WARNER Classic Label로 출반된 소프라노 조수미의 데뷔20주년 기념음반 ”with love”의 작곡가 및 프로듀서로 참여하였다.

미국 최대박물관인 워싱톤D.C스미소니언의 한국관 오프닝 기념공연의 음악감독으로 위촉 되었으며 캐나다 웨스턴칼리지 교수 및 한미문화예술협회와 캐나다문화예술협회 대표를 역임하였다.
